There's a lot of excitement about the joy the holidays can bring, particularly this year. But at the same time, many families, especially those with fragile loved ones, may be experiencing stress and sadness.“It's the first time in my life that I have not been with any of my family members. And so that's really difficult and tricky for us,” said Amy Goyer, a family and caregiving expert with AARP.Goyer isn’t alone. More than three quarters of caregivers are making alternative plans this holiday season because of the pandemic.Goyer says to avoid all or nothing thinking. Instead, focus on traditions most important to your loved ones.“For one family member, the decorations are the most important part, for another one, it’s the family movie night,” she said. “It might be that the meals are the most important thing. The music, you know, the religious services. Find out what's most important and try to prioritize ways that you can adapt.”For loved ones outside the home, increase how often you talk to them. Decorate outside their window or mail them decorations. Do holiday traditions like reading a story, watching a movie or sharing Christmas morning coffee over video.“I know one caregiver who got a bunch of greeting cards and she addressed them all from different people and gave them to the facility and they're giving them to her brother who lives in a memory care facility,” said Goyer. “Every day he gets a card and that makes him feel like, oh, this is, this is the queue. This is the holiday season, and somebody cares about me.”Caregivers also need to pay attention to themselves. Well over half are already experiencing negative impacts on their mental health.“Remember to give to yourself and that that's a good thing to do. In fact, it's required. It's not optional. Because that's how we continue to have within what we need to give to others,” said Goyer. 1889

But a recent report made by the Consumer Federation of America says that scary sales tactics and false claims are allowing companies to take your money right from in front of you, and the problem is growing across the country.While burglaries in the country are down by nearly 5 percent, the amount of alarm systems is expected to be up 30 percent by 2020."They're starting to see these alarming practices of companies using scare tactics, other kinds of misrepresentations and also failing to really make clear to consumers how much their services are going to cost," says Susan Grant, director of consumer protection and privacy at Consumer Federation of America.The report found companies tried instilling fear in people in order to get them to purchase their system.Other methods used are a little more subtle, but they can be just as deceiving. The report found that companies were often pressuring consumers into deals that were too good to be true."No deal is too good to pass up,” says Grant. “If the deal is good today, it's going to be good tomorrow."There are ways you can protect yourself. Grant says it's best to do your research; never sign anything on the spot. Also, avoid digital contracts that require you to sign on a phone or tab. You should ask for a copy of what you are signing."You want to shop around and see what the costs are of other companies and compare their reputations as well," suggests Grant.Checking the company’s reviews on the Better Business Bureau is a good place to start when choosing the right company.  1749

Top USA Swimming officials are under fire for what critics say was a culture of sexual abuse that was allowed to persist for decades unchecked.A stunning new investigative report first published in the Orange County Register found that since 1997, more than 250 coaches and officials were either arrested, charged or disciplined by USA Swimming for sexual abuse or misconduct.The paper -- citing, documents, interviews with abuse survivors, former Olympians, USA Swimming officials and others -- claims that there are at least 590 victims. According to the report, the organization's top brass was aware of the problem, but did little, if anything, to stop it.  674

This week marks Lead Poisoning Prevention Week, and according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 3.6 million Americans face a risk of lead poisoning from lead-based house paint.The CDC says that even low levels of lead in the bloodstream can cause cognitive impairment in children that is irreversible.“As we observe National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week, we urge people to take action,” said Patrick Breysse, PhD, CIH, Director of CDC’s National Center for Environmental Health. “Together, we can eliminate childhood lead poisoning as a public health problem by strengthening blood lead testing, reporting, and surveillance, while linking exposed children to recommended services. CDC is committed to help address this threat and improve health outcomes for our nation’s most vulnerable citizens – our children.”The CDC is encouraging parents to get their children’s lead levels checked by a doctor. Three restaurants associated with celebrity chef Mario Batali will be closing in Las Vegas.Batali has been accused of sexual misconduct. All three restaurants are located at The Venetian/The Palazzo. The restaurants will close July 27. A letter written by Joe Bastianich with B&B Hospitality Group says that Las Vegas Sands Corp. decided to end the relationship. The letter also says that the group will help employees transition into new positions. An earlier report said that B&B was "actively negotiating" to buy out the celebrity chef.Batali stepped down from daily operations of his restaurant empire and his cooking show after the allegations surfaced in December.
