Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., and Emma Gonzalez, who took cover in Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, during a 2018 school massacre, made the case for gun control on Wednesday at that Democratic National Convention.Giffords was victimized by gun violence as a member of Congress at a town hall event in her Arizona district in 2011. The incident nearly took her life, as she spent months in recovery. There were six people fatally wounded at the 2011 incident.“America needs all of us to speak out, even when you have to fight to find the words,” Giffords said. “We are at a crossroads. We can let the shooting continue or we can act. We can protect our families, our future. We can vote. We can be on the right side of history.”Giffords' husband Mark Kelly is running for a Senate seat in Arizona. Gonzalez became a gun control activist, among others who were part of the 2018 shooting in Parkland. Flint schools are finally getting the help they need to provide safe water fountains for their students.Flint Community Schools thanked billionaire Elon Musk and the Musk Foundation last week for donating money to install new water fountains with filtration systems at all its schools.Lead and other toxins were found to be tainting Flint's water supply four years ago, in what's been called the Flint water crisis. Since then, the community has struggled with water contamination problems."We are deeply grateful for the generosity and the budding partnership between Flint Community Schools, the Musk Foundation and Elon Musk," said Flint Community Schools Superintendent Derrick Lopez. "The new water filtration systems will be instrumental in helping our students return to the normalcy of what should be a fundamental right: having access to safe, clean water from water fountains in their school."Flint schools will install new ultraviolet water filtration systems for all its water fountains in school buildings thanks to the 0,350 donation, according to the city of Flint.The former Tesla CEO responded to the school's announcement on Twitter. Four San Diego lawmakers are proposing a more than billion solution to stop sewage from Mexico from contaminating South County beaches.The four members of congress, all Democrats, announced the plans at a news conference Monday. Their legislative acts would free up funds to pay for cross border infrastructure projects that would keep sewage from flowing up from the Tijuana River and the Punta Bandera treatment plant. The flow goes into the waters off Imperial Beach and Coronado, and has led to numerous closures. "We have an emergency along the border. It is sewage," said Rep. Juan Vargas, whose 51st district includes Imperial Beach. "Let's quit talking about other things. it's sewage right here, let's do something. We need money, we have the projects. Let's get going." Vargas, joined by Reps. Scott Peters, Susan Davis and Mike Levin, said the will to fix these problems comes down to funding. A bill introduced by Vargas and Peters would increase the North American Development Bank's capital by .5 billion to finance infrastructure projects. Additionally, Levin has introduced legislation to authorize 0 million a year for five years through the Border Water Infrastructure Fund. Mexico would be expected to contribute to the projects financially, but there would be exemptions for financial or national security reasons.
