Ethan Couch, known for his "affluenza" defense in his deadly drunk driving case, was released from a Texas jail Monday after serving nearly two years behind bars for violating his probation.Couch, 20, first made headlines as a teenager when he was sentenced to probation for a drunken driving crash that killed four people and seriously injured two others.Prosecutors in that 2013 case sought 20 years in jail, but Couch received no prison time after a psychologist testified that Couch was a victim of "affluenza," a product of wealthy, privileged parents who never set limits for him.The decision by the juvenile court judge to put him on probation for 10 years outraged victims' families and anti-drunk driving advocates. In 2015, Couch violated the terms of his probation and fled to Mexico with his mother, Tonya Couch. They were found and sent back to the US, where a Texas judge ordered nearly two years of jail time for Couch.Mothers Against Drunk Driving described the two years Couch has spent in jail as "a grave injustice to the victims and their families.""The 720 days Ethan Couch served for his crimes shows that drunk driving homicides still aren't treated as the violent crimes that they are," the organization said in a statement. It vowed to keep monitoring the case because it "brought to light that there is so much more work to be done to hold drunk drivers accountable."As part of Couch's current probation, he will be required to wear an ankle monitor, an alcohol detecting patch, submit to drug testing, abide by a 9 p.m. curfew and have a video interlock ignition device installed in his vehicle, according to Mike Simonds of the Tarrant County Sheriff's Office.Couch's mother is currently facing charges of money laundering and hindering apprehension of a felon for helping her son flee to Mexico. Tonya Couch recently had her bond revoked after failing a drug test and is behind bars in the Tarrant County Jail, the sheriff's office said last week. 1983

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- San Diego County’s largest ice-skating facility is closing for good.Officials with Ice-Plex Escondido announced Thursday that the facility, located on 555 N. Tulip St., is shutting down effective immediately.Since 1995, Ice-Plex was a destination for San Diegans looking for a place to ice skate or play hockey. The facility, with its two Olympic-sized ice rinks, offered classes and public ice skating sessions that ran 7 days a week.In a statement on their website, Ice-Plex officials said, “This was not an easy decision. Our hockey and skating communities have been strong partners to us throughout the years, and we have worked hard over the last few months to find an alternative way to keep the facility open. Unfortunately, that solution has not emerged.”Officials said the facility has been operating “at a substantial loss” in the past few years, and they’ve struggled to maintain the equipment and other systems needed to keep the facility running. The pandemic-related closure also affected the facility’s ability to stay afloat, and despite numerous efforts, officials could not find ways to keep the Ice-Plex open.“We close our doors with a heavy heart and would like to extend our deepest thanks to our athletes, customers, staff and volunteers, who have been responsible for creating a welcome and competitive environment at Ice-Plex. You have brought joy to our lives. Your dedication to sport, community and individual achievement will not end with Ice-Plex,” officials said.Read the full Ice-Plex statement 1560

ESCONDIDO (CNS) - Two men were stabbed, one fatally, in a gang-related attack at a mobile home park in Escondido and the suspects were at large Saturday morning. The stabbing occurred at 8:30 p.m. Friday in the 500 block of West 15th Avenue near the Centre City Parkway when two men in a black Toyota sedan arrived at the location and began arguing with the victims. ESCONDIDO, Calif (KGTV) - An albino red-tailed boa constrictor named "Lemony Snicket" is back home.A man wearing a hood and backpack returned the snake on May 16 to the EcoVivarium children's museum in Escondido. Museum officials believe Lemony disappeared on April 29. The snake was dehydrated and had not been fed. It was also full of mites. Lemony will undergo a 30-day quarantine.RELATED: Snake named 'Lemony Snicket' missing after unfortunate events at Escondido museumThe boa disappeared after a series of — ahem, "unfortunate" — events during a tour at the children's museum. Lemony was taken out of its cage for guests, before being locked back up.During the tour, however, museum officials said a man in his 20s excused himself from the group never to return. Later in the day, they said the boa was missing.A security camera facing Lemony's enclosure was also inoperable. Earlier the same day, the camera broke. A security expert said it appeared the camera was knocked out by some type of electrical charge. The museum said it would not press any charges against the person they believe to have taken the snake. 1144

Facebook announced Monday that it’s updating its hate speech policy to prohibit any content that denies or distorts the Holocaust. The company says it has already banned more than 250 white supremacist organizations and updated its policies to address militia groups and QAnon. They also took down 22.5 million pieces of hate speech from the platform in the second quarter of the year.Additionally, the company recently banned anti-Semitic stereotypes about the collective power of Jews that often depicts them running the world or its major institutions.Facebook says its decision to ban Holocaust denial content is supported by the well-documented rise in anti-Semitism globally and the alarming level of ignorance about what happened to Jews and other groups during World War II.A recent survey of adults 18 to 39 found that 63% of all respondents didn't know that around 6 million Jews were murdered and 36% thought that 2 million or fewer Jews were killed during the Holocaust.Because research shows Holocaust education a key component in combating anti-Semitism, Facebook says that starting later this year, it will also begin directing anyone to credible information off Facebook if they search for terms associated with the Holocaust or its denial on their platform.“For many years, we have worked with communities around the world to help us understand how hatred, including anti-Semitism, is expressed online,” wrote Facebook in a statement. The company added that the enforcement of its new policies cannot happen overnight.“There is a range of content that can violate these policies, and it will take some time to train our reviewers and systems on enforcement,” wrote the company. “We are grateful to many partners for their input and candor as we work to keep our platform safe.” 1800
