XIANGNING, Shanxi, April 5 (Xinhua) –- Nine miners trapped under the flooded Wangjialing coal mine in north China's Shanxi Province were taken out of the shaft Monday morning miraculously to safety, after 179 hours underground.The survivors were immediately sent to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. Their blood pressure and heart rates remained normal after having being trapped in the shaft for one week.One of the survivors, named Li Guoyu, 38, had a lucid mind and told doctors that he comes from central China's Henan Province. BEIJING, May 7 (Xinhua) -- China's recent measures to cool the red-hot property market had curbed excessive home price rises in some cities, a senior government official said Friday during an online discussion with Chinese netizens.Qi Ji, vice minister of housing and urban-rural development, said the reaction to the tightening measures was positive -- after local governments implemented the measures in line with the central government's policy.In April, the Chinese government introduced a raft of tough measures to rein in soaring home prices which grew a record 11.7 percent from a year earlier in March.The measures included more restrictive down-payment requirements, higher loan rates, a ban on lending for third home purchases and tighter scrutiny of developers' financing.He said rapid price growth in some cities was mainly because of a shortage of supply as well as "unreasonable demand.""If not curbed, the excessive gains in prices could spread to more regions, affecting people's living standards and threatening financial safety and even social stability," he added.He said the government would increase crackdowns on illegal practices by property developers, including hoarding of land and delaying sales to exaggerate profits.The government would also strengthen checks on developers' land purchases and fund-raising, he said.He said that the government would seek to increase supply of low-income housing and that a plan regarding construction of such housing for the period to 2012 would be unveiled before the end of July this year, he said.

CHANGSHA, May 13 (Xinhua) -- The body of an elderly man has been recovered from the debris of a landslide, bringing the death toll from rainstorms in central China's Hunan Province to 12, the Hunan flood-control and drought relief headquarters said Thursday.About 42,000 people were relocated to safe areas over the past day as the rainstorms lashed more than 280 townships in Hunan from 2 p.m. Wednesday, said a statement from the headquarters.The latest victim was a 72-year-old man who died in a rain-triggered landslide in Xupu County of Huaihua City, where four bridges collapsed and 68 roads were cut by flooding, said Zhou Shengqi, publicity officer of Xupu.  A strawberry field in Loudi, Central China's Hunan province is flooded on May 13, 2010. HARBIN, May 16 (Xinhua) -- Seven people were killed, and 98 more injured after a tornado and hailstorm struck northeast China's Heilongjiang Province Saturday, a local official source said Sunday.Altogether 8,502 people were affected, among whom 3,684 were evacuated, after 28 townships of Suihua City, about 120 km from the provincial capital Harbin, were hit by the violent weather from 3:15 p.m. to 5:50 p.m. Saturday, Suihua's emergency response office said in a statement.A total of 1,015 houses were toppled down in the tornado, and Minqiang Village of Gongrong township was hit the hardest, with the roofs of every house being uplifted, it said.Five people of Beilin District and one from Suihua's Lanxi County were killed. The strong wind tore through eight townships of Hailun city under the jurisdiction of Suihua, killing one more people."I was cooking at the outer room when the tornado came. I attempted to close the window, but the wind was so strong and fast that the house collapsed before I could close it," said Wang Junxia, a woman from Xinquan Village of Beilin District, Suihua City.Wang was temporarily buried beneath bricks, but she managed to crawl out of the rubble and saved by the rescuers.Relief work was underway.Two hundred quilts and more than 500 kg of bread were sent to the affected Beilin District.
