SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Investors are watching carefully to see if interest rates keep dropping, or if they may eventually dip below zero in the United States.Recently, former Chairman of the Federal Reserve Alan Greenspan said it's a possibility, as rates have remained historically low for the past few years.In San Diego, the results of a negative interest rate would be good news for some and bad news for others."Low rates are a double-edged sword," says Dennis Brewster of SagePoint Financial. "If you're a borrower, if you're looking to buy a house today, mortgage rates have never been lower. But if you're a saver and you have money in the bank or in a CD, your rates are pretty poor."Brewster says the interest rate tends to drop when growth in the US is slow, both for the population and the Gross Domestic Product. He says that's what's happening now, as the baby boomer generation is getting older and later generations have fewer children. Brewster says slower population growth leads to slower economic growth because there are fewer people in the workforce, which means company production is down, and so is spending. He says that is happening despite record low unemployment.As for negative interest, Brewster says the average San Diego shouldn't worry since it's unlikely to happen."I wouldn't change your long term plans," he says. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Large churches throughout San Diego are scaling down services in an effort to control the spread of the novel coronavirus. Miles McPherson, Senior Pastor of The Rock Church, says they normally get 12 to 13 thousand people who attend services at their seven campuses. Now, attendees who show up for worship won’t be allowed inside. A message sent out to members let them know about the change. RELATED: What's the difference? However, we are still going to have church and it’s going to be awesome,” McPherson said. “Here’s what’s going to happen. On Sunday at our normal times – 8, 10, 12, and 6, we will be broadcasting all of our services online on all of our platforms,” he added. McPherson also said church staff are taking precautions for those inside by sanitizing surfaces and not shaking hands. The Rock Church isn’t the only religious organization making changes amid COVID-19. The San Diego Catholic Diocese says, beginning Monday, all daily Masses will be cancelled, but they will be streaming Sunday Mass in English, Spanish and Vietnamese. The Diocese adds that churches will remain open for parishioners who want to pray and seek spiritual assistance. It’s unclear how long Mass will be cancelled. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Malls across San Diego County did not experience the rush of last-minute shoppers on Christmas Eve, as the coronavirus continues to take its toll on the economy and life in general."We used to have to have the employees park in a different section that was further away so it left the open spots for customers, we haven't needed to do that this year," said Caitlin Todd, manager at Grossmont Center's Prevue Formal and Bridal.Todd said other than Target and Sees, the mall has been less busy this holiday season. She said it's not just the economy, but also that the coronavirus has made in-person shopping a more practical matter. "With restaurants not having as much ability to have indoor dining or outdoor dining, it's been more of a 'come, get what you need and leave,' kind of shopping experience, versus an all-day thing with the family," she said. The virus has taken a toll on the retail industry, with employment in department stores down 28% compared to the same time last year. Malls have instituted social distancing, limited entertainment, and retailers are limited to 20% capacity - meaning lines to get in. They also recommend that families practice their disaster plan so they're ready when an emergency happens.When an earthquake does happen, families should drop, find cover under something sturdy, and hold on to that cover. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It’s approaching one year since a San Diego Navy Sailor was hurt in an explosion while on deployment, leaving him paralyzed.Saturday, community members rallied together to support wounded sailor, Kenton Stacy, on his journey to recovery. Hundreds of people gathered in Liberty Station for the Stacy Strong 5k.“We feel very blessed,” says Kenton Stacy’s wife, Lindsey. “All the love and support we’ve seen over the last year just has been amazing.”The event had live music, a silent auction, and awards for race winners. During this time last year, the Navy EOD tech was deployed in Afghanistan when an IED exploded while he was clearing out a hospital. The explosion left him paralyzed from the neck down.“It’s definitely been a very hard year… There’s been highs, there’s been lows,” says Lindsey Stacy. Her husband has not made it home from the hospital just yet but, today he was transported and joined family and friends at the event.“I just think he feels so blessed," she added.The funds for the event will go to the EOD warrior foundation. The organization provides financial assistance and resources to wounded active duty service members and veterans. Stacy’s “Alive Day” anniversary is November 9.  1270
