Even shorter breaks can erase some lessons.A special program at San Diego Unified is helping keep kids stay sharp and excited about learning all year round, even during breaks. It's about making learning a fun, family affair.In a classroom at Rosa Parks Elementary School in City Heights, 7-year-old students Melody and Isabella are getting some one-on-one attention with their lessons. The teachers in this case are Melody's grandmother and Isabella's mom."Everyday they have to read. Everyday they have homework to do," said Anna Gonzalez. She and Maria Theresa Jaume are among a growing number of parents and guardians getting more involved with their kid's education through the "Family Engagement Department" at San Diego Unified."So, I now know how to ask her questions," says Gonzalez, "How to engage her with the reading and things like that.""It solidifies the bond right," says Family Engagement Program manager Pamela King, "It shows kids that education is important." King says the program was established in 2016, inviting families to become partners in their kid's education with tips on how to do it."You're reading a fiction book. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Students have been released from school following reports of shots fired in the area around Kearny Senior High School Wednesday afternoon. According to San Diego Police, officers were alerted to the reports around 2:20 p.m. So far, no one has been taken into custody and police are still searching for a scene. Mesa College Drive is also closed from Ashford to Armory while police search the area. Kearny Senior High School is located on the 1900 block of Komet Way near San Diego Mesa College. 523

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Coronavirus Pandemic has had an unexpectedly positive effect on the Helen Woodward Animal Center, as pet adoptions have doubled over the past week."This is a fabulous time to bring animals into your home," says Jessica Gercke, the spokesperson for the HWAC.Gercke says the Center has seen a surge in people applying for adoption and fostering because they're working from home, and have more time to integrate a new pet into the family."We're seeing a lot of teachers and graduate students," says Gercke, noting that many had planned to wait until summer break, but moved up their adoptions because of the extra time at home.That's what led Anna Fairman, a Carlsbad Kindergarten teacher, to adopt last Thursday. She took home a new dog, Archie."I had had this plan that I was gonna adopt a dog at the beginning of this summer so that I could obviously have time to spend with the dog and train it," she says. "Now, just seemed like the perfect time."The HWAC is doing its part to keep the adoptions as safe as possible. They're only letting one person in at a time, with appointments set up in advance. Each person is allowed to interact with up to three animals to decide which one to take home.For fostering, the HWAC is doing video chat calls to inspect the homes of people wishing to foster and make sure they're safe and appropriate for the pets. They're also doing online training for potential foster families."We're seeing this beautiful, beautiful love that animals give to us," says Gercke. "It lowers blood pressure. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The mother who reported her 3-year-old son missing in Linda Vista Tuesday morning has been arrested. According to police, Maria Flores was arrested for filing a false police report. Flores reported her son, Kevin Serrano, missing from a home in the 2500 block of Ulrich St. just after 10 a.m., according to San Diego Police.At 3:00 p.m., police reported the boy was found unharmed in the 7500 block of Mesa College Drive. Officers said the child's caregiver called them and said he had been dropped off in the morning.Flores told police that Kevin was last seen at home. Police deployed officers on foot, patrolling on motorcycles, and air resources to help search for Serrano.“This is highly unusual. We’re taking this extremely seriously," police said during a press conference. "The door was unlocked and closed, according to the mom ... The clock is ticking for us, we’re extremely worried." 952

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Coast Guard is searching for three people after a fishing vessel caught fire Saturday night, sending two people to the hospital and leading to the rescue of 15 more.According to the Coast Guard, the crew of a 42-foot fishing vessel named “Time Machine” called to report seeing a fire at 9:35 p.m. 28 miles south of Point Loma. The good Samaritans aboard the boat were able to pull 15 people out of the water, including two who were injured.10News spoke to the captain and crew of "Time Machine."Captain Mike Koesterer and his crew were on their way back into San Deigo from a fishing trip in Baja California when he saw an explosion in international waters. "I saw an orange flash," he said. For the next 20 minutes, he drove his vessel closer to the ball of fire. The next thing he saw will be etched in his mind forever. “We thought it might be a few people. But we kept on counting and counting and counting," Koesterer said.In the water, he and his crew witnessed 15 people screaming for help. Some had life vests. Others were wading. That's when his son Reeve changed into his diving suit and jumped in to help.“I knew there were going to be burns, but I didn’t think it would be that bad,” Reeve Koesterer said. He first pulled up a woman without a life vest. She desperately grabbed his hair and used Koesterer as a floatation device. The next few rescues were a blur. One by one, he carried and pulled the burn victims onto the "Time Machine." During the rescue, one of the victims told Reeve Koesterer that this was part of a human smuggling operation. “Do whatever we can to get them out of the water. No matter what the case is. They’re still lives,” Reeve Koesterer said. Andy Vo is usually responsible for shooting and editing fishing videos for the "Time Machine's" charter trips. Last night, he was also documenting the rescue on his phone. As the Koesterers were pulling people on board, Vo comforted the victims-- giving them blankets and coffee. “People that we rescued. He called us angels," Vo said. What are the odds that a fishing boat carrying Reeve Koesterer--  a young, bilingual English Spanish speaker, expert diver -- would be right there to save those lives?
