SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A senior "hero" leapt into action when she saw a man snatching a neighbor's package in the La Jolla area.On a quiet afternoon last week, Gillian Ackland was in her living room when she saw an unfamiliar white car park right in her cul-de-sac off Colima Street in Bird Rock."It felt kind of strange," said Ackland.Next door was a big package sitting outside her neighbor's door.MAP: Track crime happening in your neighborhood"The car suddenly starts backing up diagonally. I realize he's going for the package, and I run out the front door, saw him with the package and ran to his side of the car," said Ackland. Her neighbor's Ring camera captured it all. In the video, a man is seen walking up to the door, grabbing the big package and a smaller one. As he starts running to his car, so does Ackland, who yells, "That's not yours!" three times. He shoves the package in the back seat, but the door didn't fully close."There was adrenaline going," said Ackland.Ackland sensed her chance."I knew I had a few seconds and I could do something - and I did it," said Ackland. She opened the back door and tried to pull the package out. The package starts to fall out, but not far enough, as the car drives off. Ackland has no regrets."The injustice of all kept me going. I just felt it's not right, and I just thought I could get the package away from him," said Ackland.Another neighbor took a photo of the car showing an Uber sticker on the front windshield. Inside the package was a side table. She says the neighbor missing the package thanked her profusely. He told 10News she is a "superhero neighbor.""It's actually a little embarrassing," said Ackland. The video was shared on the "Neighbors by Ring" app."It's important that neighbors look out for each other. Some might call me crazy, but I think I'm adventurous. I've led an adventurous life and that's who I am," said Ackland.A police report was filed. 10News reached out to Uber and sent them the images of the driver and car, but have yet to hear back. 2049

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A U.S. Marine stationed at MCAS Miramar has tested presumptive positive for coronavirus after returning from leave in Washington state. The Marine was returning to the base from leave in Washington state where he was visiting family, which is where officials believe he contracted the virus, officials on base familiar with the matter told 10News.A high level source in the military added that the Marine was tested on base for the virus after feeling ill and placed into quarantine while results were pending. The Marine is currently at home under quarantine, off base, that source added.A second Marine who returned from leave in Washington with the first service member is currently considered a person under investigation at Camp Pendleton. There, the second Marine is getting daily medical checks, according to I Marine Expeditionary Force (I MEF).RELATED COVERAGE:-- What's been canceled, postponed in San Diego, nationally due to coronavirus-- Gov. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A World War II veteran is being honored not only for his service to our country but to the San Diego community. With the help of former students, current students, and staff at Hilltop High School in Chula Vista, the library was dedicated to World War II veteran Tom Rice. The lifelong Coronado resident was an Army paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Division on D-Day. He was the first to jump out of his C-47 after it crossed the English Channel.RELATED: Retired Chula Vista teacher grateful for war hero's inspirationRice taught U.S. government in the Sweetwater Union High School District for more than 30 years, mostly at Hilltop High. The surprise was unveiled to Rice on Thursday. "Everyone has given me their grace, and I have nothing to return but just my presence, and that was it. So this might be a closure for me, to come back to the old stomping grounds where I spent most my working days, 30 some years," said Rice.RELATED: Coronado D-Day veteran parachutes out of plane over NormandyThe idea to honor Rice initially came from two former students, Kathy Cappos Hardy and Suellen Butler. The two women say Rice didn't talk about the war when he was a teacher; it wasn't until years later they learned of his bravery. "We are honored to know him and honored by what he did for us as students and what he did for our country," said Cappos Hardy.Rice is well known for returning to Normandy to reenact his D-Day jump in honor of those who never made it home. He most recently made the jump at age 97. RELATED: Chula Vista honoring World War II Army veteran Thomas Rice"I do the jumping and try to remember them," said Rice. "Because they were killed, captured, or injured, or walked away, wouldn't talk about, and they didn't ever get a chance to grow up," Rice said to 10News in 2018.The Hilltop High library is officially now the Thomas M. Rice Library and Media Center. 1907

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego man whose bike was stolen, decided to track the thief himself. But instead of turning him in, he turned the situation into something positive. Rob Greenfield never thought he'd see his bamboo bike again. “I didn’t lock it because I was sitting 20 feet from it and then I heard a noise and I looked back and saw the guy speeding off into the night with it.” When he found the thief, he didn't turn him in. He pulled him in for a hug, forgave him and took his bike back.  “It’s one of a kind bamboo bike but really what makes it special is that I’ve biked across the United States on it doing good deeds," he said. "So I’ve traveled thousands of miles across the country.” The theft made him want to do more good deeds, right here in San Diego. “I decided that rather than turning that into a really negative situation I would turn it into a positive situation," he said. "Knowing the feeling of having a bike stolen I decided I wanted to give bikes to kids who have had their bikes stolen and can’t afford a new one.” Greenfield started a GoFundMe to raise money for bikes. Bikes that he would then donate to the Boys and Girls Club - to kids whose bikes were stolen. He says it's a lesson in kindness that he hopes the thief who took his bike, and the kids who were given bikes, will pass on.“I can crowd out the bad with lots of good. So one bike stolen so I can give away 10 bikes, he said. "In that way it just wipes that bad deed out.”Rob gave away 10 bikes Tuesday and says that there is enough left for him to do it again.  1614
