House Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte has issued subpoenas for former FBI Director James Comey and former Attorney General Loretta Lynch.Goodlatte, a Virginia Republican who is retiring, is requesting private depositions from Comey on December 3 and Lynch on December 4. House Republicans have been investigating FBI actions in the 2016 campaign, but that probe will end when Democrats take over the committee in January.Comey, who has previously rejected the committee's request for him to appear privately before the GOP-led inquiry, reiterated his position soon after the subpoenas became public."Happy Thanksgiving. Got a subpoena from House Republicans. I'm still happy to sit in the light and answer all questions. But I will resist a 'closed door' thing because I've seen enough of their selective leaking and distortion. Let's have a hearing and invite everyone to see," Comey tweeted.David Kelly, an attorney for Comey, said Thursday that his client will fight the order in court."While the authority for congressional subpoenas is broad, it does not cover the right to misuse closed hearings as a political stunt to promote political as opposed to legislative agendas," Kelly said.Lynch has not yet commented publicly about the subpoenas. After the House Judiciary Committee signaled earlier this month their intention to subpoena Comey and Lynch, Rep. Jerry Nadler, the Democrat who is expected to chair the panel next year, criticized the move as "unfortunate.""Months ago, Director Comey and Attorney General Lynch both indicated their willingness to answer the Chairman's questions voluntarily. My understanding is that the Republicans have had no contact with either the director or the attorney general since," Nadler said last week.Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein remains another potential witness hanging over the GOP-led investigation. Conservatives on the panels demanded that Rosenstein appear to answer their questions about his reported remarks about wearing a wire to record the President and efforts to recruit Cabinet members to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove Trump from office. A scheduled meeting with Rosenstein last month was postponed and has not been rescheduled. 2215

HOUSTON (AP) — The Supreme Court has rejected a lawsuit backed by President Donald Trump to overturn Joe Biden's election victory, ending a desperate attempt to get legal issues rejected by state and federal judges before the nation's highest court. The court's order Friday was its second this week rebuffing Republican requests that it get involved in the 2020 election outcome. In a blog post, Justices Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas said that Texas "has not demonstrated a judicially cognizable interest in the manner in which another State conducts its elections." "We do not have the discretion to deny the filing of a bill of complaint in a case that falls within our original jurisdiction," the justices said in the brief.According to a press release from the Republican Party of Texas, which was obtained by ABC News' Adam Kelsey, the decision by the justices would have huge ramifications that would possibly see law-abiding states banding together to form a Union of states that will abide by the constitution. 1031
HUD Secretary Ben Carson directly offered condolences to the family of Jacob Blake after Blake was shot seven times by Kenosha Police officer Rusten Sheskey on Sunday. Carson’s comments come on the fourth night of the Republican National Convention. While Republicans have blasted the Black Lives Matter movement night after night, there had largely been no mention of the incidents that triggered the summer of unrest across the US. 441
IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif. (KGTV)— South Bay beaches are closed again, after millions of gallons of contaminated sewage water spilled from Tijuana, BC into Imperial Beach communities. It may look beautiful from afar, but up close, Giovanny Ceja says the waves were a little off Thursday afternoon. “We usually go to other beaches, and they look really clear, but that one was dirty and brown,” Ceja said. Ceja and his little sister spent the day at Imperial Beach, near the south end of Seacoast Drive, boogie boarding and building sand castles. To get there, he walked right past many warning signs. Large yellow signs read: “KEEP OUT. SEWAGE CONTAMINATED WATER.”“It’s a completely unacceptable,” Imperial Beach City Councilwoman Paloma Aguirre says.According to the International Boundary Water Commission, a Tijuana water collector ruptured Wednesday night. That spilled 3.5 million gallons of sewage water into the Tijuana River, which gushed into South Imperial Beach. “It’s incredibly frustrating because this is the summer. This is our time to have open beaches in Imperial Beach,” Aguirre said. “It’s because of the incredible negligence that the state of Baja California authorities have shown and the lack of accountability and leadership from our federal agencies.”So far this year, there have been 50 beach closure days in Imperial Beach. Aguirre says as polluted water gushes into IB, quality of life gushes out. “At the end of the day Imperial Beach is at the end of the pipe,” Aguirre said. “We are the ones that are paying with economic losses, with illnesses to our kids, to our families, and to our environment.”As for little Giovanny, who did not notice the warning signs, now he is getting worried. “When I was boogie boarding the water wet in my mouth,” Ceja said. “I’ll shower. Maybe twice.”THe closure only affects beaches south of Seacoast Drive in Imperial Beach to the US-Mexico border. The IB Pier remains open. 1949
