SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A proposed homeless housing project in the Mission Hills community might face a snag. Mission Hills Heritage is working on getting a historic designation for the old Mission Hills library on Washington Street. The building is one of several sites the city is considering for a public housing project. The city is looking to build permanent supportive housing. Permanent supportive housing is not a shelter. It's a space helped paid for by rental assistance and offers supportive services to assist homeless people with disabilities or homeless families with disabled family members. Barry Hager, with Mission Hills Heritage, says although there is some backlash from the community about the homeless housing project, his group is merely fighting to save history. They are not taking sides on the homeless housing issue, but their problem is the project would require the demolition of the building. He says the building is worth preserving because it was built in the early 1960s and is a prime example of mid-century modern or mid-century style architecture. “It’s really the only mid-century building in the commercial core area of Mission Hills,” Hager said. “This is really a preservation project, and preservation issue, not an issue about homeless housing.” A city says they are working to find out how a historical designation could impact any plans for the site, but for now, they are proceeding as planned. They sent the following statement: “Cities up and down California are facing a housing crisis. Here in San Diego, we are encouraging all types of housing, including permanent supportive housing. We are in the process of finalizing the RFP for several city-owned properties we identified in early May for permanent supportive housing, including the old Mission Hills Library. (CNN) -- An atmospheric river is moving to the West Coast, likely to bring menacing flooding, heavy mountain snow, and damaging winds.Atmospheric rivers are narrow corridors of the upper atmosphere that transport intense moisture from a large body of water onto land.Track the latest weather and holiday travel delaysThe Pineapple Express is a specific atmospheric river that originates near Hawaii and travels across the Pacific Ocean to the western coast of North America.Oregon and Washington will see the worst of the stormThursday through Saturday, heavy precipitation will move into Oregon and Washington. Coastal regions will become saturated from very heavy rain, with as much as 4-8 inches expected.The higher elevations of Oregon and California can expect heavy snow, with possible totals of 5-20 inches. Forecasts for the Cascade Mountains in Washington are even higher, with totals expected between 1-3 feet.Ice is also possible for portions of the Hood River Valley Thursday. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- One person was taken to the hospital with serious injuries after being struck by a car in Pacific Beach Monday afternoon. According to police, the crash happened near the intersection of Mission Bay Drive and Garnet Avenue at 1:18 p.m. Witnesses told police the silver BMW was traveling fast before hitting a 67-year-old pedestrian in a raised median along Mission Bay Drive. The car then continued into the busy intersection and hit a Ford Fusion before flipping over and coming to a stop in the Enterprise Rental lot. The pedestrian was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening head injuries, a broken pelvis and internal injuries. The 40-year-old driver of the BMW was uninjured and a woman in the Ford Fusion only had a complaint of pain. At this time, it's unclear whether or not drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash. 865
