A high school basketball game between two Santa Maria, California, rival teams ended with students in the stands taunting the other team and a confrontation between school administrators. As the seconds counted down to the final buzzer, the matchup between Righetti and St. Joseph high schools became much more than just a game. Chants of "where's your passport" from the Righetti student section filled the gym, leading to a heated exchange between school officials. It was captured in a video posted to Twitter by Santa Maria Times Sports Editor Joe Bailey. According to the Santa Maria Times, St. Joseph High School has three players on the boys' basketball team from Puerto Rico and one from France. The video shows St. Joseph's principal, Erinn Dougherty, storming across the court to confront the Righetti students. While a woman appears to try to calm down Dougherty, Righetti's Assistant Principal Ted Lyon gets involved in the exchange and trades words. 974
....misrepresenting what took place inside of the hospital. Their news conference after I left for El Paso was a fraud. It bore no resemblance to what took place with those incredible people that I was so lucky to meet and spend time with. They were all amazing!o— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August 7, 2019 326
A 14-hour Congressional hearing ended around 11:20 p.m. on Thursday as Judiciary Chair Jerry Nadler shocked his Republican colleagues by not calling for a vote on articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump. Nadler instead announced at the end of the hearing that he would reconvene the committee at 10 a.m. on Friday. The Republicans' ranking member on the committee, Rep. Doug Collins, called the move a "kangaroo court," as other GOP members compared Nadler to Joseph Stalin. Collins told CNN that the move to delay the vote was “the must bush league stunt I’ve ever seen in my entire life.”The hearing came to an end after the Republicans put forth five amendments to the Democrats' impeachment resolution. All five resolutions came with a round of comments by the entire committee. All five of the GOP resolutions were voted down by party-line votes. 879
2018 has been a tumultuous year in Washington — we've seen unprecedented turnover in the White House, the passings of two political statesmen, and indictments of several Trump associates as part of special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation (which still continues full speed ahead). The holidays, however, are a time to be hopeful. As the second year of the Trump administration comes to a close, here are five moments from this year's political news that everyone can find something to smile about, no matter your political leaning.1. Michelle Obama and George W. Bush's friendshipSince President Barack Obama took office, protocol has placed these two next to each other during official events. Former first lady Michelle Obama and former President George W. Bush have been spotted hugging, joining hands and just seeming to enjoy one another's company over the years, but their friendship went on full display earlier this year at the late Sen. John McCain's funeral. The two shared a sweet moment (and social media virality) when Bush handed Obama a cough drop in their row of former presidents and first ladies. At his own father's funeral later in the year, Bush repeated the gesture, handing Obama another small item from his pocket when he greeted her.In an interview in November, Obama said that her friendship with 43 "reminds us that we can get there with the right leadership and with the right tone setting and with each of us giving one another the benefit of the doubt.""I'd love if we as a country could get back to the place where we didn't demonize people who disagreed with us," she added.2. Tammy Duckworth's baby on the Senate floorIn April, Illinois Sen. Tammy Duckworth gave birth to a baby girl, making her 1746
