SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – An inmate who left a San Diego re-entry facility on Wednesday was apprehended in the North County..California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation officials said 51-year-old Larry Johnson “walked away from the Male Community Re-entry Program (MCRP) facility” on Boston Avenue in Barrio Logan Wednesday night.Staff at the facility learned Johnson’s GPS device “had been tampered with” at around 10:30 p.m. Johnson was last seen in the afternoon on an “approved pass to attend work.”Local law enforcement agencies were notified of Johnson’s disappearance, and CDCR agents fanned out to find him.At around 10:30 a.m. Thursday, CDCR officials said Johnson was taken into custody at a hotel in Carlsbad without incident. He will be transported and rehoused at Richard J Donovan Correctional Facility, officials said.CDCR officials said Johnson was in the midst of a 4-year sentence for one count of attempt to use an ID of another to obtain information, which was his second-strike offense.Johnson had been scheduled to be released to probation in May 2021. 1087

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego-based financial investment advisor is being accused of running a Ponzi scheme targeting mostly elderly victims who planning for retirement, and taking more than million, according to bankruptcy court records.Sharon and David Vega said they started working with Christopher Dougherty about 17 years ago. A few years ago, Sharon Vega said that he recommended to take money “out of the TD Ameritrade and place it in private placement in farm subsidy accounts.”The Vegas trusted him and placed approximately ,000 in these new accounts. They said they continued to receive statements showing how their money was doing, but they started to see red flags. Sharon Vega said when checks bounced, Dougherty gave various excuses.She showed Team 10 one bounced check where Dougherty claimed “there was a mix-up at the bank.” They decided to sever ties and asked for their money back.“He said no problem, he would start on it right away,” Sharon Vega said. However, she said that did not happen. She showed Team 10 several text messages from Dougherty late August into early September promising their money. One message said the transfer was “already in motion. Should see it shortly.”“We have not received any funds back. He filed bankruptcy and he’s trying to have ours discharged with many other people’s,” Vega said. She said the ,000 was money they had been saving to try and help their grandchildren with college.In bankruptcy court documents, the United States Trustee wrote Dougherty’s “deception is the basis of a Ponzi scheme.”“[Their] practice of using new investment money to pay existing investors dividends and principal gave the false impression that the payments received by investors came from earnings and profits or from a return of their principal,” the documents said. “It’s devastating,” said Jerry, another former client of Dougherty. He and his wife declined to use their last name.Jerry and his wife Diane told Team 10 they invested more than million with Dougherty over the years. At first, it was with traditional accounts. They said he later convinced them to invest in an Alpine farm. They thought they were diversifying their retirement money, but what they know now is everything they saved for is gone and what happened to their funds is unclear. Like Sharon and David Vega, they said Dougherty kept sending them statements.“We rely upon our children now,” Jerry said. “We can’t even afford a burial plot.”In 2011, Dougherty was charged for stealing money from a youth baseball league. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego woman who participated in a local coronavirus vaccine trial is sharing her experience.Although it’s a blind study, she says she’s convinced she received the vaccine and she hopes her story will encourage others to get vaccinated.During the summer, American biotech company Moderna began some of its phase three trials in San Diego. Leslie Sullivan was one of those patients.“I put my name in the hat and by the end of July I was in getting my first dose,” she told 10News.The vaccine is given in two doses. “It felt like a flu shot and not much in the way of reaction after the first one,” Sullivan added.She says the second time she received the shot, she felt something. “By midnight I spiked a fever, I had chills, it was exactly like how the flu feels.”A day later, Sullivan was back to normal.Sullivan doesn’t know whether or not she got the vaccine, but says based on the symptoms she experienced, she’s almost positive she didn’t get a placebo. She says some people she’s spoken with mistakenly believe that if she got the actual vaccine, she had COVID-19.“The vaccine does not give you COVID this particular one has no live virus in it at all.”Both the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines use MRNA technology, which relies on messenger RNA to essentially trick the body into making antibodies to fight the virus.At some point Sullivan will find out if she did indeed get the vaccine When a vaccine is made available to the public, those who received a placebo will be notified so they can get vaccinated. 1544

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An Air Force pilot killed during the Vietnam war will finally be laid to rest Saturday. Major Roy Knight Jr. died in action in 1967 when his plane was shot down over Laos. In the following decades there were multiple efforts to find his remains. It wasn’t until earlier this year that investigators discovered Knight and used dental records to identify him. “It is remarkable; I can’t believe it happened,” said his son Roy Knight III of Valley Center. Knight’s family had almost given up hope of seeing him buried. “There's a bunch of emotions that happen. First is just enormous gratitude for the people that went in and got him and that we as a nation continued to try to find him.” Thursday, Knight’s remains were taken from Laos to Dallas Love Field on a Southwest flight. In the cockpit was Knight’s oldest son, a Southwest pilot who saw his father leave for Vietnam at the same airport years ago. “We came up with the idea of what if would it be possible, and it required both tremendous effort on the part of the Air Force and Southwest Airlines to make it happen,” Knight said. Knight said his father was and always will be his hero. “The tremendous respect and honor shown my father, and and there's no doubt he earned that as does every one of our armed forces, especially our fallen.” Major Roy Knight Jr. will be buried in Weatherford, Texas. 1382
