Liliana Gallegos says she could not breathe and had chest pains when she was infected with the novel coronavirus.“Back then, even myself, I wasn’t masking up,” Liliana Gallegos said. “I was like, ‘it’s not that serious. It was like a cold or flu.’”It was far from a cold or flu. Gallegos was diagnosed with COVID-19 in April, and she wasn’t the only one in her household. Her 63-year-old father and her children also got infected. Later, her fiancé got sick.“He passed it on, and all his co-workers caught COVID. It just spread, and we were not cautious about that at that time,” said Gallegos.Gallegos recovered 17 days later. The experience gave her a new perspective.“I think it’s so important to take the precautions they are telling us. Six feet apart, sanitize, wear your mask,” she said.More than 1,000 hospitals in the U.S. are teaming up to encourage everyone to stay safe. The Every Mask Up (#EveryMaskUp) campaign provides vital health resources and has developed messages on a variety of digital platforms to get the word out.Medical experts say wearing a mask is the best chance of slowing the COVID-19 pandemic.Right now, more than 13 million Americans are infected, and more than 250,000 have died. 1220

LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) - Three baby sea lions stranded in a small cave in La Jolla were rescued Friday by SeaWorld experts. The sea lions became trapped for an unknown reason and did not appear to be able to swim to safety. The animals' mother cried out in distress as onlookers watched from above. One sealion was lodged between two rocks, while two others were inside on the floor and unable to find their way out. A SeaWorld team reached the scene about 11:30 a.m. to save the sea lions. Mark Bressler, a SeaWorld rescuer, said the mothers and babies can get separated when humans get too close to the sea lions. The crowd cheered as the animals were reunited with their mom. 687

LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) - The future of organ transportation may be passing through La Jolla. Physicians at Scripps Green Hospital recently moved a donated liver from Escondido to La Jolla in a new transport system before successfully transplanting it into a police officer. The effort was part of a clinical trial evaluating the transportation system, known as OCS (Organ Care System) Liver, at several major transplant medical centers across the United States. “It’s almost like putting the organ back in the body right away,” said Christopher Marsh, M.D, organ transplant surgeon and division head of Scripps Center for Organ and Cell Transplantation. The OCS is relatively larger than a microwave and pumps oxygenated blood along with other nutrients to the livers in transit. “We are constantly challenged by a shortage of livers to meet the transplant needs of our patients,” added Marsh, “warm perfusion transportation has the potential to expand the supply of organs that are available to our patients and, as a result, improve the chances of a successful transplant and a positive long-term health outcome for more of our patients.” Scripps expect to enroll nine more patients using the mechanical system in the clinical trial over the next year. 1263
