JINAN, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- China concludes a five-day air defense exercise on Saturday with a live-fire drill and precision attacks on air targets by ground-to-air missiles.The live-fire drill, in Shandong Province, was part of the exercise code-named "Vanguard-2010," which began Tuesday in seven cities across Henan and Shandong provinces, involving more than 12,000 personnel.Seven types of ground-to-air weaponry, including a new type of ground-to-air missile and another state-of-the-art anti-aircraft gun, were used in intercepting and concentrating fire on air targets.Nearly 200 military aircraft, including drones, reconnaissance aircraft, fighter jets and helicopters, were involved in the five-day military drill, said Feng Zhaoju, deputy commander of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Jinan Military Command.The annual drill, consisting of two phases, focused on an emergency evacuation, strategy, reconnaissance, early warning, ground-to-air attacks and evacuation of command posts during the first phase which ended Thursday.Its second phase included testing of air defense abilities in a "complicated electromagnetic environment."A "Vanguard-2009A" exercise last year involved 5,000 troops from the army and air force."Vanguard-2008" included a 2,200-strong armored brigade from the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Jinan Military Area Command.

OTTAWA, June 24 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese President Hu Jintao met Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper on Thursday for talks on the development of China-Canada ties.The two leaders are also expected to exchange views on major global and regional issues of common concern, said Chinese diplomats.According to the schedule, Hu and Harper will attend a signing ceremony of cooperation documents following their talks.Hu flew into Ottawa on Wednesday for a state visit to Canada.This year marks the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Canada.

The growth rate was 3.2 percentage points higher than the same period last year.The government rolled out a series of incentives to bolster consumption to counter the fallout from the global economic downturn, including subsidies for home appliances in rural areas and tax breaks for auto purchases, in early 2009, among others.China's auto sales in May rose 28.35 percent from a year earlier to 1.44 million units, bringing combined sales in the first five months to 7.6 million units, up 53.25 percent from a year earlier.Monthly sales of home appliances in China's countryside surged 220 percent year on year in May to 12.6 billion yuan. The figure for January-May period was 54.35 billion yuan, up 400 percent from year on year.

TAIPEI, June 9 (Xinhua) -- Governor of east China's Zhejiang Province Lu Zushan started an eight-day visit to Taiwan Wednesday with the aim of deepening economic and cultural cooperation between the two regions.Under the theme "Visiting Friends, Conducting Exchanges and Cooperation," the delegation will launch cooperation programs with Taiwanese counterparts in finance, agriculture, tourism, culture and education.The delegation will learn about Taiwan's experience in environment protection, disaster response and relief, and public services at the grassroots level.The delegation will also visit residential communities, villages and enterprises to communicate with local residents.Apart from provincial government officials, the delegation also includes entrepreneurs. One of the entrepreneurs is Ma Yun, CEO of Zhejiang-based Alibaba Group, the parent of Alibaba.com, the global e-commerce site for small and medium businesses that connects buyers and sellers.During a meeting between Lu and the Taiwan-based Kuomintang's (KMT) honorary chairman, Wu Poh-hsiung, Wednesday, both sides expressed their hopes to increase the number of Zhejiang residents visiting the island this year.Nearly 130,000 Zhejiang residents visited Taiwan last year, accounting for about 20 percent of the Chinese mainland's total, according to Lu.Both Lu and Wu expected the number of Zhejiang visitors to exceed 180,000 this year.Zhejiang is where many Taiwan people come from."More than one million Taiwanese people are natives of Zhejiang," Lu said.The province is also a magnet for Taiwanese investment.
