Bringing calm to what could be a chaotic kitchen, Jacqueline Bonanno has years of experiencing leading women and men.“I think that a diverse workforce is the best thing you can have,” said Scott Henley, director of operations for Bonanno Concepts.Bonanno owns four restaurants across Colorado and is considered an inspiration for the next generation of aspiring women business owners.“I love it,” said a cook at Green Russell, a cocktail joint and restaurant. “I got a daughter, and I will be proud of her one day when she opens her own restaurant.”A new study shows more women are becoming business owners across the country.“For the last several years we’ve recognized the importance of the impact of women entrepreneurs,” said Allen Gutierrez with the U.S. Small Business Administration.He says between 2014 and 2019, the number of women-owned businesses increased 21% to almost 13 million nationwide.Gutierrez added the reasons in growth range from more opportunities to more women making a side hustle a legit business. Whatever the reasons, he projects even more women to become business owners“Certainly, it makes an impact in terms of the domino effect in their community,” Gutierrez said. “Then you see those increase and become even stronger and be an employer based in that aspect.”As more women own their own businesses, Bonanno reflects on balancing making a profit and parenthood.“There were times when I was nursing in the basement and lectured by a manager that that was inappropriate,” she said.The ability to overcome obstacles has others looking to Bonanno as a source of inspiration“It shows you that I can do it, too,” said Alexis Broswell, a line cook at Green Russell. “You just have to have the confidence.”While flattered by the compliment, Bannono is now focusing on nurturing her employees to go out and open their own businesses.“When I see what young women are doing right now, I think it’s breathtaking,” she said.Despite having big dreams, Bannono says when starting a business, that it's best to start small and grow from there.“Try to stay away from investors if you can,” she said. “There’s nothing but opportunity and it’s just going to get better and better.” 2203

BATAVIA, Ohio -- Some of Robin Hornberger's best students at West Clermont High School have two choices when it comes to college, and neither is ideal: Go into debt to afford the next phase of their education or abandon it altogether. "Our dream is that they can do what they want to do, that they can look at all the professions possible and pick their profession," she said. "But for some kids, it's just too expensive. … They would be having more debt per month than they would be making per month just starting a job."She wants to help them find a third option: Go to college with enough assistance -- no repayment required -- to make it manageable. That's why she's training every week and paying registration fees out of her own pocket to run in one marathon for each month of the next three years. She's already got two under her belt.Hornberger's marathons are a fundraiser and a way for her to draw attention to the difficult situation of economically disadvantaged students who want to better themselves through higher learning.Two months into 2018, she's raised ,000. BALTIMORE, Maryland — In the early hours of Jan. 19, 2015, the 15-foot Christmas tree proudly displayed in the Great Room of a large Annapolis, Maryland mansion caught fire.It spread through the home killing Sher Grogg's brother, sister-in-law, and their four young grandchildren.“They just didn’t have enough time to do anything, and it was under three minutes and everything was gone,” Grogg said.It's painful for her to talk about, even more distressing to see rooms engulfed in flames, but as an advocate for Common Voices, a coalition whose mission is a fire safe America, she witnesses fire demonstrations.“Oh, it’s horrible. And actually, really horrifying for me to see because I know my brother was right in the middle of a room that had flashover and that was his last experience,” said Grogg.This is her outlet to grieve. She's found purpose in educating and warning others. Had her brother’s home had fire sprinklers, she thinks her family would still be here today.“You can replace material things, but you can't replace a life and that's the difference. You really need to consider fire sprinklers to save the lives of your family,” said Grogg.Shane Ray is the president of the National Fire Sprinkler Association. He’s been in the fire service since 1984 and has seen how smoke detectors alone are not enough to prevent deaths.“We have more contents in our home than we've ever had before and most of those contents are made out of synthetic materials, so it produces a much more toxic smoke, much faster and much more deadly,” Ray said.On Thursday, he demonstrated how quickly a fire spreads. Within a minute, flames and smoke engulfed a tiny room. The smoke alarm sounded then the sprinklers went off. In a side-by-side comparison, the same room, without sprinklers, is completely destroyed by the fire.Ray said the sprinklers give families time to evacuate, buy firefighters time to get to the incident, and can save the lives of our pets.“Ninety-six percent of fires are contained with just one sprinkler. This is the sprinkler that came out of that fire. So, if we had another 10 rooms in the house, this is the only sprinkler that would activate. It's not tied to the smoke alarm, it's not tied to anything else, it's individually heat-activated,” said Ray, attempting to dispel some myths surrounding sprinklers.The heat in a room must reach 155 degrees before the bulb in the sprinkler shatters, releasing water. Burnt toast or cigar smoke will not set off fire sprinklers.According to the National Fire Protection Association, more than 2,500 people die in home fires each year. Sprinklers decrease the risk of dying in a house fire by 80 percent.Grogg also wants to remind people with this upcoming holiday season to water your tree every day, get rid of it right after the holiday, and unplug your tree every night.National Fire Prevention Week runs through Oct. 13.
