TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Much like the rest of the country, unemployment rates skyrocketed in Florida at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. And while the Florida unemployment rate has fallen somewhat to 7.6%, many in the state are still in need of help and may get it through a program called EB or Extended Benefits.In October alone, more than 10,000 people applied for unemployment in the Tampa Bar area — including 7,338 in Hillsborough County and 3,799 in Pinellas County."We continue to see unemployment problems within our office; it's mostly coupled with eviction notices," said State Representative Anna Eskamani, a Democrat whose district covers the Orlando area.Eskamani has fielded calls from Florida's unemployed since March."We need political back-and-forth to stop. The American people are in desperate need of relief," she said.The regular 12 weeks of benefits for those unemployed only lasted until about mid-June. That's when many applied for PEUC, a 13-week extension that took extended benefits to about mid-September.With the state's unemployment rate remaining above 5% for as long as it has, regular unemployment benefits were extended but haven't been made available yet."They're trying to integrate it into the connect system, which is why they're saying December it's going to be available," Eskamani said.In order for Floridians to get extended benefits — or EB — their PEUC benefits must have been used up between June 7 and Nov. 7."I actually think the gap that's being sent by the US Department of Labor catches most people," Eskamani said.It could, however, have an impact on Disney World employees, many of whom were furloughed or laid off amid an extended park closure. What happens for others seeking unemployment in 2021 is still unclear.Eskamani says that by then, the state legislature should officially be able to file a bill that she and other lawmakers drafted in October, hoping to get claimants more money for a longer period of time."(I want to) increase the benefit amount to 0 — change the sliding scale of what's available to us at the limit of 26 weeks, which is the national average," she said. "Put in place time restrictions for when the (Florida Department of Economic Opportunity) has to get back to you on your eligibility status."Eskamani also hopes to extend benefits to self-employed who are out of work and have the legislature's Oversight Committee hold the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity accountable.She says once the bill filed, she hopes to push the bill into committee hearings. TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — New unredacted court documents reveal Aaron Glee Jr., who is accused in the murder of Oluwatoyin "Toyin" Salau and Vicki Sims, confessed to killing the young activist and community volunteer.The documents also detail how Sims and Glee knew each other and how all three of them briefly met on June 6.Probable cause documents state that when officers responded to Glee's home in the 2100 block of Monday Road on June 13, they found Vicki Sims' car stuck in the mud outside of the home. They say a sheet was placed over the back of the Toyota and the license plate was bent up, hiding the license plate number.When they went inside, they found 75-year-old Vicki Sims' body. Investigators say her arms and feet were tied up behind her.As they continued searching Glee's home, they found 19-year-old Oluwatoyin "Toyin" Salau's body. Documents say her body appeared to be "purposely" covered with leaves and other vegetation.According to documents, when officers spoke to Sims' family prior to the discovery of her body, they said that Sims "often prepared meals for 'Aaron'" and delivered them to his home."It was reported that 'Aaron,' who did not own his own vehicle, often obtained transportation from Sims," probable cause documents read.As police continued investigating, they learned that, about two hours before the bodies were discovered, Glee had bought a bus ticket to West Palm Beach. On June 14, Glee was detained by the Orlando Police Department at a Greyhound station.After complaining about having trouble breathing, Glee was taken to the hospital. That's where documents say he voluntarily confessed to the murders; once to officers who were guarding him and again to his mother in a phone call.When TPD officers interviewed him, Glee confessed to kidnapping and murdering Salau and Sims on different dates.Glee said that on June 6, he was at a bus stop on Apalachee Parkway when he met Salau. He said they talked for about an hour.During that time, he said Salau told him that she had been recently sexually assaulted and didn't have a permanent place to stay. After that, Glee agreed to go with Salau to his home so she could bathe and rest."Glee stated that he then placed a telephone call to Sims, and that she came and picked he and Salau up in her Toyota," documents read. According to investigators, Glee's story was corroborated by surveillance video.After Sims dropped them off, Glee said she left and Salau went inside the home to take a shower. After Salau got out of the shower, Glee said he "attempted to engage her in sexual activity."He told officers that Salau physically resisted him, biting him on the arm."Glee said he physically overpowered Salau... He was asked if he would characterize his actions as rape," investigators wrote in the documents. "Glee responded in the affirmative."Glee said that he then kept Salau inside the home for approximately three to five days. He told officers that he was heavily under the influence of alcohol during that time, so he was unsure exactly how much time had passed."Glee stated that he was aware he would be arrested and likely sentenced to prison if he allowed Salau to leave the residence," documents read. "Glee indicated he determined that his only course of action was to end her life."So, Glee said he tied her up in a way that made it difficult for her to breathe.Based on the evidence and Glee's confession, officers found probable cause to charge him with two counts of kidnapping and two counts of murder (second degree murder and premeditated murder), and one count of sexual assault.During a court appearance on Saturday, a judge ruled that Glee will be held in jail without bond.This story was originally published by staff at WTXL. 3747

TELLER COUNTY, Colo. – A two-day search of the home of Kelsey Berreth’s fiancé in Florissant, Colorado turned up no sign of the missing woman, Chief of Police Miles J. De Young said Sunday.About 75 people from multiple jurisdictions searched the 35-acre home of Patrick Frazee Saturday, hoping to find any new clues that would provide answers into the Woodland Park, Colorado woman’s mysterious disappearance. Frazee, who has not been ruled out as a suspect in the case, continues to cooperate with police during the investigation, according to his lawyer.“We still have not found Kelsey,” De Young said in the latest press release from law enforcement.The search, which at one point involved the help of a backhoe, was completed Saturday and the property was turned over to Frazee.Investigators are continuing to conduct interviews as De Young stressed the case “remains our number one priority.”Details about what investigators were searching for at the home have not been released. 1022
