DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) - On the 80th Anniversary of Del Mar horse racing the industry is facing extra scrutiny over protecting the animals. This comes after 30 horses died at the Santa Anita Racetrack this past year.One of the newest safety protocols is bringing on two monitoring veterinarians who are stationed at elevated observation points to oversee morning workouts. If the veterinarian is concerned about a horse, they can radio outriders policing the track to remove horses and have them undergo a follow-up examination for soundness. "There's been a lot of concern over racehorse welfare and safety the past few months, it's something that Del Mar Thoroughbred Club has always been concerned about," said Dr. Alina Vale, one of the monitoring veterinarians.But Vale says they're now even more cautious and vigilant, working to rebuild the California racehorse community."The more subtle signs that I'm looking for are horses that might have mild injuries that haven't been detected before, so we're trying to catch those mild injuries before they become major injuries," said Dr. Vale. The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club also adopted new medication standards and can randomly select any horse for drug testing at any time. Workout activity will also be monitored closely. DENVER (AP) — A couple convicted of criminal charges in the so-called balloon boy hoax that fascinated the country more than a decade ago were pardoned Wednesday by the governor of Colorado.Dozens of rescue crews scrambled to save the 6-year-old boy after Richard and Mayumi Heene reported he had floated away in a homemade UFO-shaped silver helium balloon in 2009.According to the Associated Press, authorities said the couple staged the incident because they wanted publicity to pitch reality TV shows.But the child was never in the balloon. According to the AP, he was home in Ft. Collins.The couple eventually pleaded guilty, served jail time, and was ordered to pay restitution.Democratic Gov. Jared Polis says they don’t deserve to be dragged down by criminal records for the rest of their lives.“In the case of Richard and Mayumi Heene, the “balloon boy” parents, we are all ready to move past the spectacle from a decade ago that wasted the precious time and resources of law enforcement officials and the general public,” Gov. Polis said in a statement. “Richard and Mayumi have paid the price in the eyes of the public, served their sentences, and it’s time for all of us to move on. DETROIT — A 12-year-old girl takes a challenge and a dare that could have cost her life.It’s called the "fire challenge." Young people pour flammable liquids on their bodies and set themselves on fire.Brandi Owens says her 12-year-old daughter Timiyah Landers did the challenge with her friends last Friday.She ended up engulfed in flames. Brandi and her fiance extinguished the blaze from her baby girl and rushed her to the hospital.Timiyah is now at Children’s Hospital with second and third-degree burns over 49 percent of her body. Her mom says kids find these dangerously “outrageous” challenges on social media and Youtube. She is angry and has a message for those behind the sites that post these videos.“They need to delete this mess," Owens said fighting back tears. "It should be censored. That’s nothing that a kid should come across. I could have lost my baby, by the grace of God she’s alive. If I wasn’t home, I would have walked in to my baby dead."Owens says Timiyah knew better. So, she is urging parents to monitor their kids, their friends and their internet and social media platforms.Timiyah will likely be in the hospital for several months and will undergo several more surgeries. 1272

Defense attorneys for the suspect in the Pittsburgh synagogue massacre entered a plea of not guilty Thursday to federal charges and requested a jury trial.Robert Bowers, 46, walked into court in wrist and ankle restraints Thursday, his second court appearance this week, after a federal grand jury indicted him on 44 federal charges in last weekend's slaying of 11 worshippers at the Tree of Life synagogue.During the arraignment, Bowers watched prosecutors and nodded periodically. He responded "yes" that he understood the penalties of the charges, and his public defender, Michael J. Novara, entered a plea of not guilty "as is typical," he said.Of the 44 charges, 32 counts are punishable by death, a grand jury filing released Wednesday said.The court hearing comes the same day that crowds of mourners will lay more victims to rest and as their memorials continue to grow.On Monday, Bowers had been brought to the courtroom in a wheelchair and only spoke to answer the judge's questions. DENVER —An Aurora, Colorado high school athlete was turned away from a Texas university recently after the school’s head baseball coach told him the school no longer recruits Colorado athletes because of past issues with drug testing. The Cherokee Trail High School student expressed interest in attending Texas Wesleyan University in the Dallas-Fort Worth area on a baseball scholarship but was rejected in an email sent to the student by Head Baseball Coach Mike Jeffcoat.Jeffcoat writes, “Thanks for the interest in our program. Unfortunately, we are not recruiting players from the state of Colorado. In the past, players have had trouble passing our drug test. We have made a decision to not take a chance on Student-athletes from your state. You can thank your liberal politicians. Best of Luck wherever you decide to play.”Although not explicitly mentioned in the email, Jeffcoat is likely referring to Colorado's recreational marijuana laws. The university said it is aware of the email and is investigating the matter.
