SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego traffic is costing local commuters thousands per year, according to a new report. The Urban Mobility Report compiled by the Texas A&M Transportation Institute takes a look at major cities around the U.S. and just how much time people waste every year stuck in traffic.According to the report, San Diegans spend an average of 64 hours a year stuck in traffic. All that waiting really adds up. The report says those same commuters spend ,440 in congestion cost a year. To come up with those numbers, the report looked at the value of the time wasted, estimated at .29 per hour for the average commuter and .94 per hour of truck time. The report was also compiled using average fuel cost – which is nearly a dollar more per gallon in the state of California. Los Angeles topped the list for most time wasted in traffic at 119 hours per year followed by San Francisco at 103 hours and Washington D.C. at 102 hours. 957

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Shoppers in Del Mar Heights are checking their receipts after learning through a social media app that some merchants are charging more sales tax than they should. Last year the City of Del Mar raised its sales tax to 8.75 percent, but the tax rate only applies to businesses within the city.  The problem arose when some businesses that share Del Mar's zip code, but get San Diego services, mistakenly charged the higher Del Mar rate. San Diego's sales tax is 7.75 percent. David did not want to give his last name, but he checked his receipt for the Jack in the Box restaurant in the beachside shopping center and discovered he'd been charged the higher tax rate, an extra 8-cents. David didn't complain to management and told us 8-cents wasn't a big set-back but did say he believed the problem should be corrected.  Several of his neighbors posted comments on the Nextdoor social media site about other establishments doing the same thing. 10News made purchases at three stores and found they charged the correct sales tax, but when we bought a salad and iced tea from Jack in the Box, we were charged at the Del Mar rate of 8.75 percent, just like David.  Another customer who did not want his name used also shared a receipt showing he paid at the higher rate. He also had a receipt dated April 24 of this year, showing he overpaid sales tax to the Del Mar Wine Company in the same shopping center. A spokesman for Jack in the Box told 10News the franchise made an honest mistake and re-set its cash registers to reflect the correct sales tax. A clerk at the wine store told 10News to email the manager.  As of this posting, he had not responded. 10News Contacted the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration.  Spokesman Paul Cambra explained that Del Mar was one of the few pockets of California that have a "zip code split".  Cambra called it a common problem when zip code boundaries don't match city boundaries. In an email to 10News Cambra wrote:"If a taxpayer overcharges, we will tell them to either return it to the customer or remit it to the CDTFA. If they have undercharged, they will still owe the tax, and depending on when they remit it, they may also be charged interest and penalties." Cambra noted that no consumer complaints about being overcharged had come from the 92014 zip code. Consumers are encouraged to know the sales tax in the communities where they shop. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Several business owners on University Avenue in Hillcrest say they were vandalized sometime late Tuesday night. The owners think the suspects shot at their windows with a type of pellet gun. At least three businesses had windows either shattered or broken. Benjamin Nicholls, with the Hillcrest Business Association says he feels these businesses were targeted because of the time of year. San Diego Pride is 9 days away. Samir Hannosh owns The Glass Door Cafe, which just opened a week ago. His window replacement could cost him anywhere from ,000-,000. He says he hopes the businesses weren't targeted for being in the LGBTQ neighborhood, adding that all business will be ready and proud for the upcoming Pride celebration.The San Diego Police Department says they are investigating and working to find the person or persons responsible. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Snoopy’s San Diego Comic-Con pop-up store is celebrating the Peanuts gang’s history with NASA and the Apollo 10 mission. In 1969, Apollo 10 used a lunar module to “snoop around” the moon’s surface in advance of the Apollo 11 moon landing. The crew named the module “Snoopy” and the command module “Charlie Brown”. As Gene Cernan, Apollo 10's Lunar Module Pilot once said, "No one remembers Apollo 10—until you tell them our spacecrafts were named Snoopy and Charlie Brown, and they say 'Oh! I remember!' " To honor the 50th anniversary, Oscar-winning director Morgan Neville created “Peanuts in Space: Secrets of Apollo 10”, a mockumentary demonstrating the ties between the beloved cartoons and the space agency. The film, starring Ron Howard as himself and Jeff Goldblum as a self-published NASA historian, is available free in the Apple TV app. Astronaut Snoopy merchandise, including skate decks and finger skateboards are available at the pop-up shop at 226 Fifth Ave. Fans can also buy replicas of a Snoopy “All systems go” pennant.
