MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin — The parents of a 9-year-old Milwaukee girl shot and killed by her brother over the weekend have been criminally charged.Marcel Antonio Jelks, 32, and Talisha Lee, 29 both faces charges. Jelks has been charged with child neglect resulting in death and possession of a firearm by a felon. Lee has been charged with child neglect resulting in death, and furnishing a firearm to a felon.According to Milwaukee Police's preliminary investigation, Miyanna was accidentally shot by her brother — who is a minor — in their home in the 4500 block of North 38th Street just after noon on Saturday. She was brought to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead. Police say the brother was been taken to the Milwaukee County Children's Court Center. "She was a beautiful, young girl. She was smart, intelligent. She was just 9 years old," said Jay Jones, a family friend.Jones said seven children live in the house with their mom and dad and he doesn't believe the father knew their was a gun inside the house."They are not the type of people to put their kids in no type of danger or anything like that," he said.If convicted, Lee faces 25 years in prison. Jelks could be sentenced to an additional 10 years due to his criminal history. 1305
More than 136,000 people were diagnosed with COVID-19 in the U.S. on Tuesday according to a Johns Hopkins database, marking the fourth time this month that the country has broken the record for confirmed COVID-19 cases in a single day.Tuesday also marked the deadliest day of the pandemic in several months. More than 1,400 Americans died of the virus on Tuesday, the most recorded in a single day since 1,500 Americans died of the virus on Aug. 12.Tuesday's tally shattered the previous record of 128,000, which was set on Saturday. The mark continues a disturbing and troubling trend as health officials suspect spread will only increase as social gatherings move indoors during winter months.About a million Americans have contracted COVID-19 in the first 10 days of November. While the exploding spread rate is concerning on its own, several states across the country report that they are nearing full hospital capacity as severe cases of the virus increase.North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum said earlier this week that hospitals have already reached operating capacity and fears that facilities could be pushed past their capabilities in the coming months. In Iowa, the state's largest city is also nearing hospital capacity as available beds dwindle.More than 10.2 million Americans have contracted virus, and 239,000 have died since the virus reached the U.S. in February. Both figures lead all other countries around the world. 1437

Mondelez International, the parent company of Nabisco, has redesigned its packaging of "Barnum's Animals" crackers after being pressured by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. The group called for the redesign by Mondelez because it protests the use of animals in circuses, and the animal crackers boxes showed animals in cages, the Associated Press reports. The crackers were once named for the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey circus, but it folded for good after 146 years. It had removed elephants from its shows because of pressure from PETA, the AP says. The animal crackers boxes now show animals wandering side-by-side in the grass and include trees. 699
