CAMPO, Calif. (KGTV) — An East County resident happened upon a massive surprise Friday morning.A wayward tortoise was found by the resident on Buckman Springs Rd. in Campo Friday. A San Diego County Department of Animal Serivces officer responded to the report but immediately realized he would not be able to lift the animal on his own.A Cal Fire crew arrived to help get the tortoise out of the yard, coaxing it onto a stretcher and then lifting the heavy reptile into an Animal Services vehicle.The tortoise was then taken to the department's Bonita shelter.While it's unclear how the massive animal ended up in the East County yard, Animal Services said someone called soon after the catch to report it may have been their tortoise, aptly named "Tank." (KGTV) — Lights, camera, action!Camp Pendleton service members and families were treated to a special visit Wednesday, as actor Mark Wahlberg, known for his support of military members behind the cameras, stopped in to visit.Wahlberg participated in a meet and greet at the base's Pacific View Exchange as part of a tour to visit service members and their families, according to the base.Video posted to Twitter by Camp Pendleton showed the actor mingling with the troops and signing autographs for families. 539

CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) -- Carlsbad is known for The Flower Fields, Legoland, golf, and its family-friendly beaches, but the Village by the Sea is also home to several hidden gems. "Most people have seen us on top of the hill, on top of the Flower Fields. Certain times of the day, you might notice a beautiful crystal piece, sparkling at the top of our building. Still, most people aren't aware they can come and visit, it's probably one of the best-kept secrets in Carlsbad," said Cathryn Ramirez, Director of Global Business Development at the Gemological Institute of America. The Institute is the global headquarters of the GIA. The non-profit is home to a museum, research lab, and school. Students come from around the world to study gems and jewelry design. "We have not only our education campus here, but we have our laboratory where we do grading of gemstones, we do research here, and it's our corporate offices as well," said Ramirez. The GIA houses more than a thousand gems and pieces of jewelry. Tours are available by reservation. Another one of Carlsbad's best-kept secrets is a short walk from the GIA. "It's off the beaten track. Everyone knows where Legoland is, Legoland is a great attraction here in Carlsbad or the Flower Fields, and then we're tucked in right between those two large attractions. The Calavera Hills Nature preserve is a 110-acre site that includes more than four miles of hiking and biking trails. Obviously, it's no threat to anyone, but it's a beautiful place to go visit," said Rosanne Humphrey, Coordinator for the city's Habitat Management program. (KGTV) - Vice President Mike Pence toured the US-Mexico border in Southern California Monday, answering questions about the migrant caravan waiting to apply for asylum.Nearly 200 Border Patrol agents joined the Vice President at the Imperial station in Calexico.Pence said the migrant caravan’s attempt to seek asylum was a direct result of weak immigration laws and a “porous border.”He called on Congress to close what he described as immigration loopholes. Pence also asked for an end to the current catch-and-release policy, and a crackdown on sanctuary cities.“All of this cries out for action and thanks to the leadership to President Donald Trump, we are protecting the American people along our southern border and we are building a wall,” said Pence.Pence toured the construction site of the border fence renovation and received an update on the progress.“This new wall is roughly two or three times taller than the wall that was here today.
