The stockpiling frenzy that occurred in the spring during the first wave of COVID-19 may rear its ugly head again.Research from Inmar Intelligence shows that 57% of shoppers are planning to rebuild their stockpile as worldwide coronavirus cases surge in what experts call a second wave.In the months following the pandemic's beginning, cleaning supplies and toilet paper disappeared from store shelves as quickly as they were stocked.According to Inmar, 64% of shoppers said they took part in the spring stockpiling.By far, toilet paper (67%) and hand sanitizer (57%) are on top of the list when it comes to products that shoppers plan to hoard should they find it necessary to create another stockpile.Inmar Intelligence says it is now the responsibility of retailers to make sure supply meets demand as communities once again face possible shutdowns in the face of rising COVID-19 cases."Today's shoppers still have concerns around safety, availability, and convenience, and will continue to look to their local retailers to deliver consistency and seamless customer service across all touchpoints," said Inmar Chairman and CEO David Mounts in a press release. "As we enter one of the busiest shopping seasons, it will be important for retailers not only to prepare for this new surge in demand but also to deliver value to customers during this time of crisis to maintain heightened trust and customer loyalty."The firm stated that 27% of shoppers are considering a winter stockpile because they're concerned certain products won't be in stock when they need them.In comparison, another 27% are concerned about in-store shopping safety if a second wave were to happen.Other products that consumers have stocked up or plan to stock up on are paper towels (52%), disinfecting wipes (53%), and canned goods (54%).45% of shoppers said they plan to purchase new items such as frozen dinners, pasta, snacks, and cleaning products, which weren't in their first stockpile. This story was first reported by Jeff Tavss at KSTU in Salt Lake City, Utah. 2051

The Transportation Security Administration says they found three times the rate of loaded guns at checkpoints in July than they did at the exact time last year, despite fewer passengers traveling due to the coronavirus pandemic. In a press release, the agency said that 80% of the firearms that come through a checkpoint are loaded. "It’s just an accident waiting to happen," TSA Administrator David Pekoske said in the release.TSA said they found 15.3 guns per million people screened last month, which is up from the rate of 5.1 guns per million people in July 2019.The agency says that's alarming because they screened 75% fewer travelers last month.“TSA is diligently working to ensure our employees and passengers are safe and secure while traveling during a pandemic, and yet we are noticing a significant increase in loaded firearms coming into checkpoints,” said Pekoske in the press release. “Travelers must understand that firearms are prohibited items at airports and in the passenger cabins of aircraft. As hard as we are working to mitigate other risks at this time, no one should be introducing new ones.”Guns are permitted in checked bags, but they must be unloaded, and in a locked case, TSA said.Last year, 4,432 guns were found in carry-on bags at checkpoints nationwide, which is about 12.1 firearms per day, and 87% of them were loaded, the agency said. 1380

The world’s population has been growing, spiking in the last few centuries, and now sits around 7.6 billion. A study published this week suggests global population will peak around the year 2064 at roughly 9.73 billion people.Researchers looking at the models believe the world’s population will then begin declining, reaching roughly 8.79 billion in the year 2100. Their reasoning for the decline is that “continued trends in female educational attainment and access to contraception will hasten declines in fertility and slow population growth.”According to the study, funded in part by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and published in The Lancet, the five largest countries, population-wise, in 2100 are projected to be India, Nigeria, China, the U.S. and Pakistan. They are projecting America will have a population of roughly 336 million people in 2100. Currently, there are an estimated 331 million people living in the U.S.The average life expectancy in 2100 will be around 80 years old. The current global life expectancy is estimated at 72 years old. 1073

The U.S. decline in cigarette smoking could be stalling while the adult vaping rate appears to be rising, according to a government report released Thursday.About 14% of U.S adults were cigarette smokers last year, the third year in a row the annual survey found that rate. But health officials said a change in the methodology make it hard to compare that to the same 14% reported for 2017 and 2018.The adult smoking rate last saw a substantial drop in 2017, when it fell from 16% the year before. The new figures from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention mean there are more than 34 million adult smokers in the U.S.Meanwhile, about 4.5% of adults were counted as current e-cigarette users last year — about 11 million people. That rate appears to be up from 3.2% in 2018 and 2.8% in 2017. But again, officials said that comparing 2019 with earlier years is difficult because of the survey change. The CDC figures are based on responses from about 32,000 people.Health officials have long called tobacco use the nation’s leading cause of preventable disease and death.___The Associated Press Health & Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Department of Science Education.
