ATHENS, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) -- The third Forum on the Development of Tibet concluded here on Friday after discussions on efforts to promote the world's understanding of Tibet and enhance the cooperation between China and the rest of the world with regards to Tibet's development.This year marks the 60th anniversary of Tibet's peaceful liberation. WASHINGTON, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Friday revoked its approval of Avastin for treating the breast cancer after concluding that the drug has not been shown to be safe and effective for that use.Avastin will still remain on the market as an approved treatment for certain types of colon, lung, kidney and brain cancer."After reviewing the available studies it is clear that women who take Avastin for metastatic breast cancer risk potentially life-threatening side effects without proof that the use of Avastin will provide a benefit, in terms of delay in tumor growth, that would justify those risks," FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg said in a statement. "Nor is there evidence that use of Avastin will either help them live longer or improve their quality of life. "Avastin's risks include severe high blood pressure; bleeding and hemorrhaging; heart attack or heart failure; and the development of perforations in different parts of the body such as the nose, stomach, and intestines.Avastin was approved for metastatic breast cancer in February 2008 under the FDA's accelerated approval program, which allows a drug to be approved based on data that are not sufficiently complete to permit full approval. After the approval, the drug's sponsor, Genentech, completed two additional clinical trials and submitted the data from those studies to the FDA. These data showed only a small effect on tumor growth without evidence that patients lived any longer or had a better quality of life compared to taking standard chemotherapy alone -- not enough to outweigh the risk of taking the drug.FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, which is responsible for the approval of this drug, ultimately concluded that the results of these additional studies did not justify continued approval and notified Genentech it was proposing to withdraw approval of the indication.Genentech did not agree with the Center's evaluation of the data and, following the procedures set out in FDA regulations, requested a hearing on the Center's withdrawal proposal, with a decision to be made by the Commissioner. That two-day hearing, which took place June 28-29, included recommendations from the FDA 's Oncologic Drugs Advisory Committee, voting 6-0 in favor of withdrawing approval of Avastin's breast cancer indication.

BEIJING, Dec. 27 (Xinhua) -- The People's Bank of China (PBOC), China's central bank, announced Tuesday that it is banning local regions, institutions or individuals from setting up gold exchanges apart from the existing Shanghai Gold Exchange and Shanghai Futures Exchange.The country also bans the establishment of any gold trading platforms in other exchanges, a statement on the PBOC website said.The statement said the country has ordered a cease to the building of any new gold exchanges or trading platforms. Those which have opened for business must cease operations.The ban came amid bigger risks in gold trading after some local regions, institutions and individuals grew enthusiastic in setting up gold exchanges and trading platforms in recent years as gold prices soared, which led to a surge of illegal practices due to inadequate management, the statement said.It added the central bank will work with the Shanghai Gold Exchange and Shanghai Futures Exchange to boost the healthy development of the country's gold trading market.

NEW DELHI, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- Suspected encephalitis has killed over 100 children in the northern Indian state of Bihar since June, reported local media Saturday.At least 51 children in Bihar's Gaya district died of the epidemic in the last seven weeks, in the wake of the death of 55 children in a similar outbreak of the brain disease in another district of the state earlier, reported Indo-Asian News Service.Most of the children belong to a caste known for its absolute poverty.According to district health officials, all children have died at Anugrah Narain Medical College and Hospital in Gaya, about 100 km from the state capital Patna.The children reported high fever, followed by bouts of unconsciousness and convulsions.So far, more than 220 children with suspected encephalitis were admitted for treatment, with over two dozens of the children still battling for life, according to the report.Earlier, Indian Health and Family Welfare Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has said clinical and epidemiological data suggested that there was an outbreak of acute encephalitis syndrome, resulting in 150 cases and 55 deaths, mostly among children, from early June to mid-July in the Muzaffarpur district of Bihar.
