UNITED NATIONS, June 29 (Xinhua) -- A veteran Chinese diplomat and an expert of international law, Xue Hanqin, was elected judge of the International Court of Justice here Tuesday.Xue, a member of the International Law Commission, was elected by the UN General Assembly and the Security Council in separate voting.Xue won all 15 votes in the Security Council on Tuesday morning, Claude Heller, the Mexican UN ambassador who holds the rotating Security Council presidency for June, announced after the 15- nation Council cast the secret ballots.Heller, at the open Council meeting, also read a letter from the president of the General Assembly, Ali Treki, who said that Xue won a majority of votes in the 192-nation UN body.Xue "was elected member of the International Court of Justice," Heller said.The election was conducted under the relevant Security Council resolution to fill the vacancy after Judge Shi Jiuyong, a Chinese, resigned on May 28.She is the only female among the 15 judges of the International Court of Justice, and the third Chinese to serve on the Court.Xue told reporters here that she thanked all those who voted for her and said that she will carry out her duty under the UN Charter and the Statute of the Court.

BEIJING, July 16 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese leader Li Changchun, Friday urged the Chinese automobile industry to enhance indigenous technology and foster domestic brands while visiting an auto technology show here.At the China Achievements Expo for Self-innovated Auto Technology and Products, Li Changchun said boosting innovative capacity was pivotal to economic restructuring and shifting the economic growth pattern.Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said respect for innovation and talent should be the norm.The auto show, which runs from Thursday to Monday, features more than 140 cars from 16 Chinese companies. XINING, June 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu said Sunday the government would soon implement the reconstruction plan for quake-hit Yushu in northwest China's Qinghai Province.Hui made the remarks at a meeting of the State Council's earthquake relief and disaster control headquarters held Sunday in Xining, capital of Qinghai, according a statement released after the meeting."We must strive to accomplish major reconstruction tasks in three years in a coordinated and scientific way and in accordance with the law," Hui said.Yushu was hit by a 7.1-magnitude quake April 14, with more than 2,200 people being killed and thousands of homes being flattened.The State Council approved the reconstruction plan for Yushu prefecture on June 14.Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu (C) speaks at the reconstruction meeting for the quake-hit Yushu of northwest China's Qinghai Province, in Xining, northwest China's Qinghai Province, June 20, 2010.
