SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego State University football team announced Friday it has added a game against the Brigham Young University Cougars in December to complete its shortened schedule due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The team initially received its schedule from the Mountain West Conference Thursday with a "TBA" game on Dec. 12. That game will now be played against BYU in Provo, Utah.It will be the second straight season that SDSU ends its regular season with the Cougars. Last year on Nov. 30, San Diego State defeated BYU, 13- 3, in what ended up being the Aztecs' final football game at SDCCU Stadium to snap a six-game losing streak in the series and improve to 8-21-1 all-time against Brigham Young. The BYU game will be the sole non-conference game for the Aztecs, excepting any possible post-season play.San Diego State opens its season at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, against UNLV on Oct. 24. The Aztecs will not be playing in SDCCU Stadium this season as it is being demolished to make way for the new Aztec Stadium at SDSU West Campus. The Aztecs are coming off a 10-3 season in 2019, capped by a 48-11 win over Central Michigan in the New Mexico Bowl.San Diego State hits the road for the first time on Oct. 31, when it travels to Utah State for a Halloween clash. The Aztecs play host to Colorado State on Dec. 5 for Senior Night.SDSU is also expected to play a non-conference game on Dec. 12 against an opponent to be determined. This year, all 12 teams will compete in one division and the two teams with the highest winning percentage of Mountain West games will play in the conference championship game on Dec. 19. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A colony of 300,000 bees lives on the roof of the Marriott Marquis in Downtown San Diego, and the hotel says that's perfectly fine with them.In fact, they planned it that way.The bees are part of Bee Leaf USA's Urban Bee Keeping program, which is an effort to help the struggling American Honey Bee population."This is the absolute most fantastic thing we can do for beekeeping at this point," says Travis Wolfe, from Bee Leaf USA."For a corporate entity to onboard something as outlandish as honey bees to offset their carbon footprint is one of the most moving and engaging things that one of these businesses can do," he says. The bees have been on the roof for about five years. They gather pollen in a three-mile radius around the hotel. They also make honey -- lots of it."They make about 7 gallons a year," says Wolfe. "That really is an enormous amount to consume."Fortunately, the hotel's Marina Kitchen and Bar helps use the honey."The ethos of the restaurant is to be as local as possible," says Executive Chef Aron Schwartz. "What could be more local than our roof?"Schwartz has put the honey in seasonal offerings for the last few years. Recently, it's been part of the salad dressing in their tomato and cucumber salad. It's also been featured on the charcuterie board and in a honey almond cake."It's about being restrained," says Schwartz. We're not going to put honey into 16 dishes. We're going to put it in one or two."This month, the bar is adding a honey-infused whiskey to several of its cocktails. They've partnered with Malahat Distillery in Miramar, which is aging their whiskey for six months in barrels coated with honey from the roof of the Marriott."We get a more naturally infused honey flavor out of that than some of the bigger producers who just stir honey into the whiskey," says Bar Operations Supervisor Michael Girard."It tastes amazing. You can smell the honey, you can taste the honey, but it's not a sweet sugar bomb," Girard says. The drinks will be available throughout the summer. Meanwhile, the bees will stay on the roof indefinitely."It really is a true demonstration of fantastic sustainability," says Wolfe. 2179

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — UPDATED: MARCH 19, 2020, 7 PM - In a post to Instagram, The Gym San Diego said it would comply with the county’s order and close starting on Friday.San Diego County officials ordered all gyms and fitness centers to close Wednesday in an effort to stop the spread of the coronavirus.Officials also banned gathering of groups of 10 or more people in one room as people worldwide practice social distancing.Despite the orders The Gym San Diego located in Pacific Beach remained open to members."I just think personally, it’s being drawn out of proportion," said gym goer Daniel Rosati.Rosati chose to show up to The Gym and work out, telling 10News he did not see a problem with fitness center choosing to continue letting people in."I think if people have energy and they feel that good, I doubt very highly they have the coronavirus," he said. "That’s just my opinion."Rosati said he believes people were working out a safe distance apart."I know it’s very safe, there’s disinfectants everywhere, they’re wiping everything down all day long in between each person," he explained. "If anyone even slightly has the slightest cough or sniffle, the owner, Rick, asks them to leave."The San Diego Police Department said The Gym choosing to stay open is in violation of the county public health order, which is a misdemeanor. Police officers can give citations and even make arrests. However, officers may also just contact the business, educate them on the details of the order, and try to get them to comply."Everybody is using precautions and I don’t think that they should shut it down," said Rosati. "I’m hoping to come back later a second session."10News did reach out to gym employees to try to get a comment about why the owner chose to stay open, but did not get a response. 1804

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Violent crime in San Diego County rose in the first half of the year for the fifth consecutive year, according to a report released Tuesday by the San Diego Association of Governments. The report by SANDAG's Criminal Justice Research Division found that the mid-year number of violent crimes in the county was 5,545, up from 5,510 last year; 5,421 in 2017; 5,361 in 2016; and 5,330 in 2015. The five-year increase amounts to a 4% bump in violent crime. Reports of property crime went the opposite direction, falling from 30,447 in 2015 to 27,236 in 2019, an 11% decrease. The mid-year numbers of violent and property crimes in 2019 are vastly different from 2009, when the city received 6,256 violent crime reports and 35,204 property crime reports. Violent crime reports dropped 11.4% in that span, mainly because robbery reports fell from 1,931 to 1,411, according to the SANDAG report. Despite the overall drop in robbery reports, this year's number increased 5% compared to the same six-month period last year. Arson reports saw the largest drop from last year to this year -- falling 28% from 190 to 136 -- while homicides dropped from 40 to 38. Reported property crimes fell 22.6% from 2009 to 2019 and residential burglaries saw the biggest decrease in that time, dropping 53.9% from 4,460 to 2,054. Larceny over 0 was the only category to increase from 2009 to 2019, rising from 7,578 to 8,527. Reports of rape fell to 539 after reaching 604 at the midway point of 2018. However, numbers since 2015 may be somewhat deceiving, as California law enforcement broadened the definition of rape in 2015 to include ``male victims, sodomy, penetration with any body part or object, and no longer requires force,'' according to SANDAG Division Director of Criminal Justice Dr. Cynthia Burke. As a result, some crimes that would have been classified as aggravated assaults are now considered rapes and some crimes that would not have been considered violent crimes are now captured in these statistics, Burke said. Violent crimes include homicide, rape, robbery and aggravated assault. Property crimes include burglary, larceny and motor vehicle theft. According to the report, San Diego law enforcement has received an average of 31 reports of violent crime and 150 reports of property crime per day during 2019's first half. 2353

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A first-of-its-kind residential tower opened in San Diego this week. The 300-unit Palisade UTC complex is located right on the Westfield UTC mall's property. It offers an expansive pool, bar area, community room, open-air gym, and a lounge on the 23rd floor, with views to the coast. "The goal was to have multiple spaces, again, that would be like staying at a four or five star resort," said Jerry Brand, executive director of developer Greystar. The building will be among the most expensive in San Diego County.Studios start at ,750 a month, while two-bedroom units start at ,300. The penthouse is advertised for ,000 per month. It also includes 30 affordable units. Analysts say luxury buildings like Palisade can play a role in easing all of the region's housing crunch. "A substantial portion of the people moving into, like, the new projects downtown are actually vacating the older projects and moving up, so the luxury projects that are going up are really helping the housing situation," said Alan Nevin, director of economic research at Xpera Group. Kimberly Brewer, senior vice president of development for Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield, said the project is part of the evolution of the shopping center. The mall recently expanded to add more restaurants and a full office for CBRE, a commercial real estate firm. "What we've done at UTC we're doing across the country and really creating a live, work, play environment," she said. The buildings had its first move-in this week. So far, 50 of the units have been leased. About half of the renters are retirees, while a handful are entrepreneurs. Nevin said it could also attract young tech workers who make a lot of money but are still not ready to buy. 1746
