SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Nearly one week after Election Day and with state Assemblyman Todd Gloria holding a comfortable lead, City Council President Pro Tem Barbara Bry conceded in the race for San Diego mayor. As of Nov. 9 vote totals, Gloria was leading Bry 56% to 46%.During a virtual press conference on Monday, Bry said she called Gloria the day before and offered her congratulations. Regarding the campaign, Bry said she felt voters were misled by the media and political ads from the opposition.Bry said, "I want to congratulate Todd Gloria as the next mayor of San Diego. He and I spoke by phone yesterday, and I offered him my congratulations. But for the next few years, our city faces many challenges because of COVID-19, and Mr. Gloria will have a tough job. Thousands of San Diegans are unemployed through no fault of their own and city revenues are declining."She added, "I wish those issues could have been more central to the mayoral campaign. We certainly tried to make them the focus of our communications. Unfortunately, interest groups supporting my opponent took a different approach.Perhaps inspired by the ‘fake news’ rhetoric coming out of Washington, they spent over million on TV commercials and mailers cynically designed to fool voters into thinking they were sponsored by our campaign. In times past, dishonest advertising of that sort would have been called out by responsible journalists, and voters would have been made aware of these cynical tactics. But the media -- like many citizens -- has become so desensitized to such tactics that they no longer pique their interest. And, unfortunately, these dishonest attacks clearly impacted our campaign."When asked if she would run for mayor again, Bry said she may not seek public office again. She added she plans to take time off with her family before her next endeavor.Bry, 71, will remain on the San Diego City Council until Dec. 10. She has served as the District 1 council representative since 2016.Gloria issued the following statement in response to Bry's concession:“I want to thank Councilmember Bry for her service to our City and I wish her and her family well. It is time to put the campaign behind us and come together as San Diegans to resolve the many challenges we face. Voters have embraced my vision of creating a City that works for all of us. It’s now time to turn that vision into reality. I am honored to be the next Mayor of San Diego.”Gloria, who is scheduled to be sworn in on Dec. 10, is the first person of color and LGBT person to be elected as San Diego's mayor.Gloria, 42, served on the City Council from 2008-2016. During that time, he served as council president and was acting mayor from Aug. 2013 until March 2014. 2737

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — More rain arrived in San Diego Wednesday, less than a week after a storm swept through the county, leaving some areas flooded and city crews preparing for the wet weather. In Coronado, on First Street, crews worked to clear pipes near the shoreline. This is a large reason for flooding in the area. Public Services Director, Clifford Maurer, says flooding comes after sand and sediment gets into the storm drain from the high tides.“Some of the outfalls, the pipes that go into the bay or into the open waters have flapper valves on them. So they only allow water to go out, not come in,” says Maurer. “But when the water is above those valves there’s nothing you can do. There’s just nowhere for the water go."RELATED: Check out your daily forecastThe City of Coronado is also offering sandbags to residents. The bags are already filled and can be picked up at four different locations around the island. The City of San Diego is also preparing for the rain. Crews have signs and barricades already lined up in Mission Valley, an area frequent to flooding.Crews are placing bypass pumps in area they expect to flood. “Bypass pumps help relieve some areas of our system that may be overwhelmed with stormwater,” says Anthony Santacroce.RADAR: Live updating San Diego radarFifteen two-person crews that will be out patrolling areas within the city, looking for any storm damage or flooding. Both cities suggest homeowners should make sure the storm drains near their homes are clear of debris, so it doesn’t get swept in with the rain. 1558

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Over the last year, thousands of San Diegans received incorrect water bills, but as the city recently discovered, thousands of customers received no bills at all.Officials said at a news conference Thursday afternoon that as many as 2,500 customers may have been affected over the last three to six months. In a press release sent to 10News Thursday, the city blamed a backlog of work orders and additional training for staff on a gap between meters and the public utilities department billing system.RELATED: Audit shows City sent thousands of faulty water bills? The city says meters were still collecting usage data, but the information wasn't being generated into a bill.Earlier this year, Mayor Kevin Faulconer asked the department to re-read every meter in the city. After the project was complete, workers found 10,000 meters broken, damaged or in need of replacement. The city is working to notify customers of the amounts they may owe and says that no water service will be affected. The city also promised that payment plans will be made available for customers. The issue comes on the heels of another problem with the department. Over the last year, the audit found that thousands of San Diegans received incorrect bills. RELATED: San Diego man furious with city over ,000 water billThe issue was largely due to human error, the audit found. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Naval aviators and Marines from NAS North Island and Camp Pendleton are helping firefighters battle the Valley Fire. They joined four aircraft from the Army National Guard who came nearly straight from fighting fires in Northern California, according to Army National Guard officials."Due to the increased fire activity throughout the state of California up to and including Southern California, we are extremely short on resources, private, state, and federal resources. So we've enacted our emergency response agreement with the military here in San Diego including the Navy out of North Island and the Marine Corps out of Camp Pendleton and Miramar," Cal Fire Capt. Nick Clements said.San Diego County said the Cedar and Witch Creek/Guejito Fires were a "wake up call" and in 2008 created a new emergency operation plan partnering with the military as an added resource in a firefight.RELATED COVERAGEINTERACTIVE MAP: Valley Fire erupts in Japatul Valley areaPHOTOS: Valley Fire erupts in East CountyThree helicopters from the Navy's Third Fleet started making water drops Tuesday. The 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing has 6 choppers on standby at Camp Pendleton. They got the call Sunday night and 12 hours later they were coordinating with CAL FIRE."I knew it was a possibility but I didn't expect to go do it," Crew Chief Cpl. Michael Sennett said. They dropped 1,500 gallons of water on Monday, according to the Wing."It's cool because they use the same kinds of equipment we do so we're able to get tips and tricks from them." Sennett said they're used to flying low and carrying loads, from troops, to weapons, to any other resource.RELATED COVERAGESocial media reaction to Valley FireCheck today's weather forecast in your areaThis week their load was water, which can be tricky, he says, "sometimes we miss and it's like okay let's make a correction and adjust and we can hit it next time."Sennett said it's not the wind that makes the timing difficult, it's judging the motion of the Huey.He said Crew Chiefs coordinate critical parts of the mission. They lay on the floor of the chopper and watch the bucket fill with water, then call for the drop, when they're near the assigned target."It's definitely been a long couple days because from start-up to shut down, we come in at six, we have to land by 18[00] so it's a 12-hour day usually," Sennett said. Those long days paying off as the containment of the Valley Fire jumped from 1% - 32%."It feels invigorating to go out and do something that has a positive impact on the people around us. So much of Southern California supports what we do here and so it's good to give back to the local community," Pilot John Findley said. The crews flying out of Pendleton have years of training to qualify for this mission. It takes hundreds of hours of maintenance to keep the helicopters running during these missions.Thursday, the fire had burned about 17,565 acres and was 32% contained. The fire has destroyed 20 "habitable structures" and 17 "minor structures" and resulted in two injuries, though it was not clear if the victims were firefighters or civilians. 3137
