WASHINGTON (AP) — Tom Homan, the acting director of the agency charged with combatting illegal immigration, is stepping down.U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement announced Homan's decision Monday. The Senate had yet to act on his confirmation.Homan has been one of the most public faces of the Trump administration's crackdown on illegal immigration and has made frequent media appearances warning of the dangers he says illegal immigrants pose.Homan says in a statement that it's been the "honor" of his life "to lead the men and women of ICE for more than a year," and says his decision is "bittersweet."But he says that after 34 years, he wants to focus on his family.Homan informed Department of Homeland Security leadership earlier this year that he planned to retire this summer. 797

We're seeing more antiviral products popping up that claim to protect you against COVID-19.Pakistan-based denim company Artistic Denim Mills is making pants and masks using antiviral technology it says tested nearly 100% effective in 30 minutes against coronavirus.Denim brand Diesel is planning to add different antiviral technology to its jeans next year that it says can disable nearly all viral activity within two hours of contact.Other companies are selling antibacterial gloves that claim to destroy bacteria and micro-organisms.These are big claims, but are they true?“The people that we shouldn't trust, honestly, are the people that stand to gain financially from this,” said Dr. Mark Shrime, a professor at Harvard Medical School. “Not because they're necessarily nefarious, but they have an ulterior motive to market these products to our uncertainty and to our fear without necessarily doing the due diligence that we might want them to do in less uncertain times.”Shrime says we don't know a lot about how COVID-19 spreads on surfaces. There are no confirmed cases of surface transmission so far.He questions if these products actually do anything for you.“For sure, they haven't been rigorously tested,” said Shrime. “You will see things often that they have been scientifically formulated or other words like that, that make it sound like this is super cool, but they haven't necessarily been rigorously tested to see if they actually prevent the virus.”He points to antibacterial soaps that were all the rage for a while. The Food and Drug Administration later said they're no more effective than regular soap and water. He says instead of paying extra for what companies say is extra protection, focus on what we know works – wash your hands and wear a mask. 1783

We sincerely regret that this incident fell short of the experience we strive to give our customers every day. We reached out to this customer immediately after being notified of this event. We take the safety of our community and the conduct of Dashers extremely seriously. We have since taken appropriate actions, including deactivating the Dasher from our platform for failing to follow and maintain our standards of food safety. This story was originally published by Kimberly Craig on 497

WASHINGTON, D.C. – As if 2020 hasn’t been crazy enough, an asteroid is projected to come close to Earth on Nov. 2, the day before Election Day.There’s no need to prepare a doomsday bunker though. NASA says asteroid 2018VP1 is very small, about 6.5 feet, and “poses no threat to Earth!”According to NASA, the asteroid has a .41% chance of entering our planet’s atmosphere and even if it did, it would disintegrate due to its extremely small size. The asteroid was discovered in 2018 by astronomers in California who are on the lookout for dangerous space rocks and other cosmic surprises, The New York Times reports.Asteroid 2018VP1 seems to be making headlines because of its proximity to the contentious U.S. election, but another small asteroid buzzed by Earth just this month and it came closer to the planet than any other on record, according to NASA.The SUV-sized space rock passed 1,830 miles above the southern Indian Ocean on Sunday, Aug. 16 at 12:08 a.m. ET.Since 2005, NASA has been assigned by Congress to find 90% of the near-Earth asteroid that are about 460 feet or larger in size.“These larger asteroids pose a much greater threat if they were to impact, and they can be detected much farther away from Earth, because their rate of motion across the sky is typically much smaller at that distance,” wrote NASA. 1333

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. health officials have traced a food poisoning outbreak from romaine lettuce to at least one farm in central California. But they cautioned Thursday that other farms are likely involved in the E. coli outbreak and consumers should continue checking the label before purchasing romaine lettuce. Bros. The Food and Drug Administration said 59 people in 15 states have now been sickened by the tainted lettuce. That's seven more cases than previously reported, but regulators said they are fairly confident that the lettuce which first triggered the outbreak has been removed from the market. The FDA told consumers to avoid romaine lettuce just before Thanksgiving.Officials said a water reservoir at Adam Bros. Farms in Santa Barbara County tested positive for the bacterial strain and the owners are cooperating with U.S. officials. Officials from the FDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have not determined how the water reservoir — which is used to irrigate lettuce — became contaminated. The bacteria can get into water and soil through multiple routes, including waste from domesticated animals or wild animals, fertilizer and other agricultural products. The FDA's Dr. Stephen Ostroff said investigators have linked the tainted lettuce to multiple distributors and processors, suggesting it must have come from several farms.A man who answered the phone at Adam Bros. Farms said he could not comment on the government announcement. According to the company's website, it only grows vegetables products, including broccoli, cauliflower, celery and various types of lettuce. The government also narrowed the source of the outbreak to three California counties: Santa Barbara, Monterey and San Benito. That's down from six California counties under investigation when regulators began warning the public last month.Regulators said people should only buy lettuce with a label listing where and when it was harvested. Lettuce from outside the three California counties that was harvested after November 23 should be safe to eat.Romaine harvesting recently began shifting from California's Central Coast to winter growing areas, primarily Arizona, Florida, Mexico and California's Imperial Valley. Those winter regions weren't yet shipping when the illnesses began.E. coli, the bacteria often associated with food poisoning, usually causes sickness two to eight days later, according to health authorities. Most people with the infection get diarrhea and abdominal cramps. Some cases can be life-threatening, causing kidney failure and seizures.___This version corrects spelling of Adam Bros. Farms, not Adams. 2653
