SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Thanksgiving with the Salvation Army will be different in 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic."We knew that we were going to do something," says Captain Sean Kelsley, who oversees the Salvation Army East County Operations. "The question was, what would it look like?"For the past 30 years, the Salvation Army held large, family-style gatherings to feed people experiencing homelessness, the disabled, and families in need at Golden Hall for Thanksgiving. They plan for 1,800 people, plus volunteers.But a gathering of 2,000+ people is strictly forbidden under California and San Diego County COVID-19 guidelines.In its place, the Salvation Army will offer "grab-and-go" style meals at four locations around the county."We're just glad to be able to be here," says Captain Kelsey. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The mayor of Temecula has announced his resignation after facing raging criticism over an email stating he didn't “believe there’s ever been a good person of color killed by a police officer." James "Stew" Stewart's comments went viral June 2 and drew a firestorm of calls for his resignation and threats of protests. Stewart made the racist remark in a reply to a constituent "concerned about our police officers and their sensitivity training.""As you know the City of Temecula does not have its own Police Department," Stewart said in his email. "We contract with Riverside County Sheriff's Department.""And I don't believe there's ever been a good person of color killed by a police officer," said Stewart.Stewart posted a copy of the email on his own Facebook page explaining that he is dyslexic and uses voice text, and that he published the note without proofreading what was recorded."I may not be the best writer and I sometimes misspeak, but I am not racist. I deeply regret this mistake and I own it, entirely. I am truly sorry," Stewart said in his resignation letter posted on Facebook late Thursday night.Stewart's comments brought tension to the small tourist destination city during a time in which the nation is seeing daily demonstrations and protests against police killings and racism. A Change.Org petition has started circulating demanding that city officials acknowledge that "systemic racism and police brutality exist in Temecula and the need for reform and consequence."Temecula, a city of about 115,000 residents in Riverside County, is located about 85 miles north of San Diego. The area is a popular Southern California destination known for its dozens of wineries, hot air balloon rides, and festivals similar to Northern California's wine country.Stewart's biography remains published on the city's website. It says that Stewart moved to Temecula in 1991 with his wife and three children from Oswego, Illinois. According to his page, the businessman owns eight barbershops in the area and that he has worked as a dentist during mission trips to Haiti pulling teeth and conducting eye glass clinics in Ethiopia.The city has not released plans to fill his vacant seat. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Christ United Methodist Church's Safe Harbors Network needs help to prepare for the next wave of migrants approaching the US-Mexico border.The network, started in 2016, provides basic necessities for refugees, such as a bed, shower, food, clothes, medical care and legal aide, until their court date."They don't have anything, they have the clothes they're wearing, they don't have phones, they don't have money, they would be homeless, so we take them in," Volunteer Kathryn LaPointe said.In 2016 the majority of their refugees were Haitian, over the past several months they're mostly women and children from Central America."We're taking in between 20 and 30 a night the past few days, most of them were able to send to their families, but I would like to help more people," LaPointe said.Sunday, LaPointe said they're at capacity and need all the help they can get. "Every person that walks in front of me, I ask for a building," she said laughing, "can you please get me a building."The network is comprised of individuals, congregations and organizations who care for refugees. "[Provide] basic human kindness, and," LaPointe said as she sighed heavily, "I am so grateful to be able to do that to extend that kindness and I would like to extend that kindness to more people." 1347

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The former gang member who killed San Diego Police officer Archie Buggs in 1978 was granted parole suitability Thursday.Jesus Cecena was 17 years old when he opened fire on Officer Buggs during a traffic stop in Skyline. According to the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office, Cecena fired five times at Buggs, then paused, walked toward the fallen officer and fired a final bullet into his head at point blank range. The officer died on the street, his hand still on his service revolver.Cecena was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. His term was later modified, due to a change in law making him eligible for Youth Offender Parole.Cecena has been denied parole at least 13 times. Governor Brown reversed the parole board’s decisions to release Cecena in 2014, 2015 and 2017, citing the seriousness of the crime.RELATED: San Diego Police honor officer shot and killed by gang memberIn 2014, 10News reported that Cecena’s unstable social history continued during his incarceration, where authorities said he received more than ten violation reports for misconduct while in prison.Thursday’s parole board recommendation will move into a 150-day review period, according to a California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation spokesman. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Surveillance video shows a couple at a Kearny Mesa home, targeting an American flag.John Dodds bought his flag two years ago and displayed it with a light outside his home on Atlas Street."My father was a Navy veteran, my brother was very patriotic and instilled it within me," Dodds said. "I want everyone to know how much I appreciate this country and what the veterans of this country do for us."A flag typically flies in front of Dodd's home 365 days a year. On Thursday morning, Dodds walked outside and saw the empty flag holder, before reviewing his surveillance video.Around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday night, two people with backpacks - bandanas on their faces -  walked by. One of them walked up to his porch and yanked out the flag before she took off. Dodds posted the video on the Nextdoor app in hopes of tracking down those thieves - and his flag.        "Maybe it was a big joke to them, but I don't think they know how seriously most of us take the flag of the United States of America," he said. Dodds plans on getting another flag but is still holding out hope for it to be returned.
