CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Chula Vista neighbors are dealing with the aftermath of a San Diego Gas and Electric equipment malfunction that triggered a power outage and caused their homes to smoke.Residents on Country Club Circle told 10News about the outage Saturday night. Electricity was restored and everything seemed fine, they said, but they woke up to sparked outlets, smoke and fire Sunday morning.“Every single room sounded like someone came in with gunshots,” said Mona Hernandez. “My girls got up screaming ‘fire’ in one of the rooms and I thought they were on fire. I feared they were actually on fire until I got to see them.”SDG&E said the equipment failure involved a transformer and affected more than 400 homes in the area. One woman said she was concerned about her air conditioning and heating working for her son.“He’s disabled. We need the heater to use. He's going to have open brain surgery next week. You people from SDG&E should have been out here.”She also said her smart television was destroyed by the outage and feels she deserves more than what SDG&E is offering to replace it.“ for a Toshiba smart TV is not very nice.”SDG&E said it has representatives assisting customers with claims. One option for neighbors is to replace items then submit proof of purchase with reimbursement. The power company also offered to send an electrician to the home of any neighbor having trouble with outlets or major appliances.Affected residents can call SDG&E at 800-411-7343. 1522

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Police arrested a man on suspicion of breaking into a Wells Fargo bank in Chula Vista early Thursday morning.Bank security personnel contacted Chula Vista police at around 2 a.m. after they saw a man break the front window at the branch on 1232 Broadway and enter the business.According to police, security cameras showed the man “going through the drawers behind the counters.”Police surrounded the bank as some officers entered the business. Officers arrested the man, later identified as 25-year-old Rene Torres, without incident.Police said officers at the scene determined Torres “pried open most of the cash drawers but was unable to access the vault or currency storage areas. He did cause a lot of damage to the interior of the building.”ABC 10News learned officers discovered several rolls of coins in the suspect’s backpack that police presumed to be from the bank.Torres was arrested on suspicion of burglary and booked at CVPD headquarters. However, Torres was released due to the county’s COVID-19 booking restrictions.Torres, according to police, was given a notice of a future court date.Anyone with information on this case is asked to call Chula Vista police at 619-585-5732 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 1264

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A suspect was arrested in the shooting death of a 24-year-old man in Chula Vista, police announced Tuesday. On May 15, Chula Vista police were called to the 200 block of G Street in response to reports of gunfire in the area. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Chula Vista’s Police Chief and a city councilman hosted a public safety meeting in a community where most would think safety isn’t an issue.  Chief Roxana Kennedy and Councilman John McCann met with several residents Wednesday night at the Montevalle Community Center.“I feel the balance is like this:  Housing, people, lights, traffic, less parking and police protection and presence are here,” said Chula Vista resident Dianne Farsetta while holding one hand up and one hand down. “It is a little scary.  We want to be in a safe environment.”Community groups on Facebook and Nextdoor appear to post more instances of crimes throughout the communities of Eastlake and Otay Ranch. Farsetta said the city is growing faster than its police force. However, Councilman McCann says the crime in his district is still less than half the crime level in other Chula Vista districts.  Additionally, McCann said Chula Vista is still one of the safest cities of its size in the country.  Nevertheless, McCann and Chief Kennedy listened to the community Wednesday night.“We want to make sure that we’re working with our police and our community to continue to make it as safe as it is,” he said.Farsetta and several others want to see more police on the streets and a police substation on the city’s eastern side.  Headquarters is on the western side of the city.McCann said the city’s immediate need is more officers on patrol.  He added he wants a substation but that the estimated million price tag is too much for Chula Vista. 1598

Chula Vista, CA (KGTV) - A Chula Vista City Council candidate running for District 4 says she is recovering after testing positive for COVID-19.Andrea Cardenas tells 10News she first started feeling symptoms on March 9th. She had a fever of 102, headaches, nausea and stomach pains. So, she called her doctor then went to seek medical care."When I went to Urgent Care, they asked me a few questions," she said. "They asked me if I had been in contact with someone who had tested positive and at the time I didn't know."She said because she is running for city council, she knew she was around many people on election night, but had no idea if anyone was carrying the coronavirus then."They had me do a chest x-ray where they accessed that I had pneumonia," she explained. "They said we could send you to the emergency room and have you tested but they explained the shortage of tests"She said her doctor explained that they were trying to hold the COVID-19 tests for the more vulnerable populations.Cardenas decided to just go home, self isolate, take the medication for pneumonia and hydrate."We have a social responsibility and a community responsibility to stay home," she said.Soon after, she was made aware that she had in fact been in contact with someone who contracted the coronavirus and she was tested immediately on the 16th.Her positive test results didn't come back until the 26th. "When I did test positive, I got a call from the county where they wanted to know my experience, all the symptoms that I had and where I had been," she said.Cardenas said she was fortunate to let the county officials know she had been home the entire time. She tells 10News has not left her home in 21 days and urges other who feel symptoms to immediately self-isolate and call their doctor."The moment that you feel any symptoms, just act as though you have it because it’s better to be safe than sorry," she said.According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, most people who have COVID-19 have mild symptoms and can recover at home without medical care. The County of San Diego urges people to call their doctor or 211 if they have symptoms. 2160
