YAOUNDE, March 23 (Xinhua) -- China and Cameroon said on Tuesday that they would make joint efforts to step up their parliamentary ties.The pledge came out of the hour-long talks between China's top political advisor Jia Qinglin and President of National Assembly of Cameroon Cavaye Djibril.Jia, the chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), the country's top advisory body, is on a three-day official visit to the central African nation.This is the first visit to the African continent by a senior Chinese leader this year.Jia said that exchange and cooperation between the CPPCC and National Assembly of Cameroon would help boost people-to-people relationship and state-to-state relationship."The CPPCC would like to increase personnel exchanges with the National Assembly of Cameroon and discuss how to run the state and promote livelihood," Jia said.Djibril said the National Assembly of Cameroon stands ready to work more closely with the National People's Congress, China's top legislature, and the CPPCC.On the broader China-Cameroon relationship, Jia said the two countries have withstood the test of time and vicissitudes in the international arena since they established the diplomatic ties in 1971."The two countries have reaped new harvests in recent years," Jia said, referring to bilateral cooperation in trade and economy, science and technology, education, among others.China appreciated Cameroon's adherence to the one-China policy and support to the most populous country on issues concerning China's core interests, Jia said.Jia reaffirmed that China would work with Cameroon and other African countries to implement eight new measures announced last year by Premier Wen Jiabao, including debt cancellation, agriculture production, infrastructure, education.As China and Cameroon will mark the 40th anniversary of the diplomatic ties, Jia called on the both sides to take the opportunity to boost exchanges at all levels and hold celebrations to uplift the relationship.Echoing Jia's proposal, Djibril said his country would like to cooperate with China to advance relationship and generate benefit for their peoples.Following the talks, Jia also delivered a key-note speech on China-African relationship.Jia will meet with President of Cameroon Paul Biya on Wednesday.Cameroon is the first leg of Jia's ten-day African tour which will also take him to Namibia and South Africa.

BEIJING, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese police had cracked 210 online gambling crimes and arrested 918 suspects in the 13 days ending Feb. 20, an official with the Ministry of Public Security (MPS) said Wednesday.Gu Jian, vice director of the bureau of cyber security under the ministry, said the ministry also cracked another 122 less severe cases and punished 351 people in the same period.He did not provide further details about the cases.Eight Party departments, government ministries and financial regulatory bodies including the MPS and the People's Bank of China, jointly launched a seven-month-long nationwide campaign to curb online gambling on Feb. 8.The campaign, according to an earlier statement from the MPS, targets "major and severe cases, and would arrest domestic and foreign groups that organize online gambling and severely punish the offenders."Online gambling has seriously disturbed social and economic order, and has drawn strong complaints from the public, Gu said.

UNITED NATIONS, March 18 (Xinhua) -- China on Thursday voiced its support for the liberalization of global trade and opposition to trade protectionism in all its forms in order to pave the way for the economic recovery in the world at large.The statement came as Li Baodong, the permanent Chinese representative to the United Nations, was taking the floor at the Special High-Level Meeting of the UN Economic and Social Council with the Bretton Woods Institutes, namely the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development."China supports the liberalization and facilitation of global trade, and opposes trade protectionism in all its forms," Li said. "We should strive for the conclusion of the Doha round negotiations in 2010 to bring about comprehensive and balanced results. We also need to redouble the efforts of the WTO to promote aid for trade, and help developing countries strengthen capacity building.""Trade is a key driver for world economic recovery," he said. " Since the outbreak of the financial crisis, world trade has plummeted, and trade protectionism is on a visible increase. BEIJING, Feb. 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese lawmakers Wednesday called for improving the country's food safety supervision network after a nationwide law enforcement inspection tour.National lawmakers started the inspection tour last September after the Food Safety Law took effect last June.Lu Yongxiang, vice chairman of the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, told lawmakers that many regions had not completed reform of the food safety supervision mechanism.Most of the cities and counties had not started the reform yet, Lu said at a three-day bimonthly session of the top legislature that started Wednesday, when presenting a report of the inspection tour.He called for stronger coordination led by health departments.The report suggested establishing a national food safety risk assessment center and a food safety standard management system.Earlier this month, the State Council set up a food safety commission consisting of three vice premiers and a dozen minister-level officials.The lineup of the commission's members includes Vice Premiers Li Keqiang, Hui Liangyu and Wang Qishan, as well as more than ten heads or vice heads of government departments in charge of health, finance, and agriculture among other portfolios.The establishment of the commission followed a string of nationwide crackdowns and arrests in the wake of new melamine-tainted milk products being found in Shanghai as well as Liaoning, Shandong and Shaanxi in recent months.
