SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Legion Major League Rugby team announced Tuesday that it released recently signed player Steffon Armitage in the wake of his conviction for sexually assaulting a woman in France. On Monday, a French court found Armitage guilty of groping a woman's breasts outside a bar last year in the town of Pau, where he was playing at the time of the assault. Armitage, 34, admitted he had also been drinking heavily that night. The court handed Armitage a suspended prison sentence and ordered him to compensate the victim with 5,000 euros, roughly ,500 in U.S. dollars. The Legion signed Armitage in July. Earlier in the decade, Armitage won three European Rugby Champions Cup titles with France's FC Toulannais and was named the European Rugby Cup's 2013-2014 player of the year.He had been expected to join the team at the beginning of pre-season training in December."Armitage's conduct does not reflect the values of the Legion and therefore, the team is going to go in a different direction for the 2020 season," the team said in a statement released Tuesday. The Legion launched with Major League Rugby in 2018 as one of the league's seven founding teams. The organization plays all home games at University of San Diego's Torero Stadium. 1273

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego City Council will take a look at the Riverwalk San Diego project Tuesday, a proposed transit-oriented neighborhood development along the San Diego River in Mission Valley.International real estate firm Hines has proposed the 200-acre project, which is intended to transform the existing Riverwalk golf course into a neighborhood as well as restore the stretch of the San Diego River that runs through it.According to Hines, if the plan is approved Tuesday, the company plans to break ground during the second half of 2021.The San Diego Planning Commission recommended approval of Riverwalk San Diego project on Oct. 22 with five in favor, one abstention and one commissioner absent. The Hines plan includes 4,300 homes -- 10% of which are planned to be affordable housing -- a Metropolitan Transit System Green Line trolley stop, 152,000-square-feet of retail space, 1 million square feet of office space, 100 acres of parks and new bike and pedestrian paths, including an extension of the San Diego River Trail."I think it could be something to set the standard for what transit- oriented development can look like," said San Diego Planning Commissioner Vicki Granowitz. The Riverwalk plan, established through a partnership between Hines and the Levi-Cushman family landowners, incorporates community input gathered over several years by the Hines team in nearly 100 stakeholder and community planning group meetings."We appreciate that the planning commissioners recognized the extensive community outreach and collaboration that helped form our plan and the care we're taking to create an environmentally responsible, transit- oriented legacy project for San Diego," said Eric Hepfer, managing director at Hines. 1754

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The City of San Diego began a virtual open house Monday to solicit public input for two potential uses for a vacant lot in the Encanto community. The city is asking the public to consider two redevelopment proposals for the Valencia Business Park located at Stevens Way and Imperial Avenue.Located in the federally designated San Diego Promise Zone, the Valencia Business Park has been vacant for more than 20 years. According to the city, the community-focused redevelopment is moving forward and expected to create at least 72 full-time jobs."For years, the vision for Southeastern San Diego has included activating the Imperial Avenue Corridor and development of the Valencia Business Park property," said Councilwoman Monica Montgomery Steppe. "We are energized to take another crucial step in this process and get vital input from our community on this redevelopment, as we see this vision come to fruition."The first proposal is a campus for the San Diego American Indian Health Center, described as a "wellness-centered community hub" that would account for 150 healthcare jobs, including 75 new ones. The other proposal is the San Diego Energy Equity Campus, a community hub site which proposes to provide educational resources to the underserved Southeast San Diego community. The public can view the proposals and provide feedback by visiting ValenciaBusinessParkInput.org. Public feedback will be collected through Oct. 14.The San Diego Promise Zone is one of 22 Promise Zones throughout the United States and is one of four located in California. More than 80,000 San Diegans live within the SDPZ, which covers a 6.4-square-mile targeted area from East Village and Barrio Logan east to Encanto.According to the city, community input received through the open house will directly impact the evaluation of the request for proposals submissions and help determine which plan will proceed negotiation and development."This is a fantastic opportunity for the surrounding residents, business owners and all community members to voice their preference on the proposals and share their collective vision for the development of this site," said Christina Bibler, director of the city's Economic Development Department. All San Diego residents and business owners are allowed to participate in the virtual open house. The San Diego City Council will ultimately vote on the recommended redevelopment proposal. For more information, visit valenciabusinessparkinput.org. 2490

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The ride-hailing company Lyft announced an expansion Wednesday of its pilot program at Camp Pendleton that streamlines access to the U.S. Marine Corps base for military members, their families and civilians who work at the military installation.Lyft launched the pilot program in collaboration with Marine Corps Community Services last year to make it easier for people living on the base to book a ride with a company like Lyft or Uber, which previously required security clearance to enter the base. The ``Base Mode'' feature is now integrated into the app, automatically matching base residents with eligible drivers. In addition, a new state law allows active-duty military members and their families to drive for companies like Uber or Lyft in California with a valid driver's license from any U.S. state. According to the company, military veterans make up roughly 13% of Lyft drivers in San Diego County and more than 1,000 drivers throughout the county have access to the base.``It can be costly or prohibited for military personnel to bring cars from their home state, so they rely heavily on services like Lyft to get around,'' said Lyft driver Victor Gonzalez, a member of Lyft San Diego's Driver Advisory Council. As part of the expansion, the company said it will also share revenue generated by the pilot project with the MCCS, which will use the funds to support Marine Corps recreation programs.``Marine Corps Community Services and Lyft continue to facilitate efficient and economical transportation options for the residents of Marine Corps base Camp Pendleton with this pilot program,'' Camp Pendleton spokesman Capt. Luke Weaver said. ``The last six months have seen an increase in passenger usage as the program grows.''Roughly 70,000 people travel on, off and around the base each day, according to the Marine Corps. 1862
