SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A San Diego man who mailed more than four pounds of pure methamphetamine to Guam inside stuffed animals and had more than 500 counterfeit credit cards in his possession was sentenced to 15 years in federal prison, the U.S. Attorney's Office announced Thursday.Daniel Wayne Gorman, 33, pleaded guilty to sending four packages from a Jamul post office in 2016, each containing a stuffed animal filled with methamphetamine, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.The packages were mailed under the alias "Daniel German" and were intercepted in Barrigada, Guam, prosecutors said.He was sentenced Monday to 10 years for his plea to distribution of methamphetamine and five years for possession of counterfeit access devices stemming from fake credit cards and driver's licenses discovered at his home during a 2018 police search.Investigators found more than 500 counterfeit cards, along with "multiple fake Florida driver's licenses bearing the defendant's photograph but the personal identifying information of others," according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.Many of the credit cards also bore the names of real individuals who were not Gorman, prosecutors said. 1187

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man climbed through a window of a Pacific Beach home Monday morning and attacked a woman in her bedroom before fleeing, police said.Dispatchers received a call around 5:15 a.m. from the victim, who reported that she found a man in her bedroom after he apparently entered through a window of her home on Grand Avenue near Olney Street, San Diego police public-affairs Officer Billy Hernandez said.The woman also reported that the man had attacked her, but she was able to get away and lock herself in her roommate's bedroom before calling police, Hernandez said.Officers arrived and searched the home, but found no one inside. Paramedics treated the victim for minor injuries, including a bloody nose, but she declined transport to a hospital, Hernandez said.No detailed description of the intruder was immediately available. 852

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - As San Diego County awaits guidance on the effects of its removal from the state's coronavirus watchlist, public health officials reported 291 new COVID-19 cases and eight additional deaths Saturday, raising the region's totals to 36,203 cases and 660 deaths.Four women and four men died, officials said Saturday. Their ages ranged from mid-40s to mid-90s. All had underlying medical conditions.The county was officially removed from the state's monitoring list Tuesday, setting in motion a 14-day countdown that could see K-12 students back in the classroom as soon as Sept. 1, depending on the decisions of individual school districts.However, 27 schools -- mostly private, religious schools -- have been approved for in-person learning by the county.The schools include Calvary Christian Academy, Francis Parker School, Chabad Hebrew Academy, San Diego French American School, La Jolla Country Day School and others. They were among nearly 50 schools that applied for a waiver to the county's public health guideline regarding in-person teaching.Of the 8,824 tests reported Friday, 3% returned positive, bringing the 14-day rolling average to 3.6%, well below the state's 8% guideline. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A towering palm tree and the tree trimmer strapped to it came toppling down inside the lobby area at a University City-area hotel Thursday. The tree was being cut down at Embassy Suites by Hilton San Diego-La Jolla, 4550 La Jolla Village Drive, when it struck a person shortly before 11 a.m., according to police and the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department. San Diego Police told 10News the injured man was a tree trimmer. Medics took the victim, to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla. Joe Jaha, a supervisor at Arbor West Tree Surgeons, says a 3-man crew was at the hotel to take down three large palms in the lobby. He says the tree trimmer was 30 feet up the final, 40-foot palm. He had taken off the top and was trying to bring it down when the tree uprooted, with the tree and tree trimmer crashing to the ground. The tree trimmer, a man in his 30s, suffered a broken leg and arm."It had highly unusual, shallow roots, which we couldn't detect until it was too late. Edwards, 40, the founder of Social Savvy Marketing, admitted to submitting fake tax records and payroll information to receive a loan through the Paycheck Protection Program.The U.S. Attorney's Office said that in April and May, she applied for "tens of thousands of dollars of PPP loans" with three financial institutions, claiming in applications that Social Savvy Marketing had two employees who earned annual salaries of ,000 and ,000, when the company actually had no employees.Edwards provided fake addresses, Social Security numbers and W-2 forms for the nonexistent employees, according to prosecutors, who said that upon being rejected for a loan, she claimed, "This is a lifeline for my employees and my business and we won't survive without it."She was able to obtain a ,583 PPP loan, but will have to repay the entire amount as part of the plea agreement.Edwards entered her plea Tuesday in San Diego federal court and is slated to be sentenced Nov. 18.
