Shannon Chaney is as familiar with uncertainty as most Vermonters are to changing leaves each fall."We sort of white knuckle our way through life until bedtime," said Chaney.She moved to Vermont from Louisiana after surviving Hurricane Katrina.“COVID is different from a natural disaster, but you still kind of have to get out of bed in the morning and just get on with it," she said.Her uncertainty now, like millions of Americans, is at the dinner table.“We have two kids who go through a lot of groceries," said Chaney.Chaney's husband works full-time, but her job has been on hold through much of the pandemic.“My pride doesn’t feed my kids,” she said.Multiple nights a week across Vermont, there’s proof that in uncertain times, communities stand strong to help people who are food insecure like Chaney.“Food for me is such a source of comfort,” said Stephanie Bonin.Bonin helped start “Everyone Eats” with some of Vermont’s federal coronavirus relief money. The program provides help for those in need of a meal and those who need to make them.“For me, it was a dream to open up the restaurant," said Nash Patel.Patel and his wife, Leda Scheintub, opened Dosa Kitchen in February. Weeks later, the pandemic forced them to close.“You want to be realistic. None of us have lived through a pandemic before," Scheintub said.They say there were times they worried if the restaurant would have to close forever, but they are open again.Everyone Eats pays for 350 meals a week to be handed out.Right now, it's most of Dosa Kitchen’s business.“About 75%," said Scheintub.To use federal money, the meals must have some local ingredients, helping farmers get their crops into kitchens.Groups like Food Connects bring crops from nearby farms to restaurants that make hundreds of meals that are handed out each week."Restaurants know how to feed people and the community loves and appreciates our local restaurants. And our restaurants know how to buy from farmers," Bonin said.Everyone Eats has created a balance, but one that’s at risk.“We’re worried about the CARES Act money drying up," said Bonin.Bonin is working on a path forward for the program if Congress doesn’t pass another stimulus bill. SOLANA BEACH (CNS) - A man was arrested Thursday after entering a North County bank, telling everyone inside to get on the floor, announcing that he was robbing the premises and directing workers to make a 911 call to report the crime-in-process. The odd robbery scare at the Wells Fargo branch office in the 200 block of Santa Helena in Solana Beach began just after 9 a.m., according to sheriff's officials. The perpetrator -- a thin, roughly 6-foot man who appeared to be in his 30s, wearing a black hooded jacket with the cowl pulled up over his head -- entered the bank minutes after it opened and promptly made his series of demands, Lt. Karla Menzies said. He issued no threats of violence and displayed no weapons during the takeover, the lieutenant said. When deputies arrived a short time later, they found the self-described robber inside with his hands in the air, Menzies said. The man, whose name was not immediately available, surrendered without incident and was taken to Vista Detention Center to be booked on suspicion of attempted robbery. Seven US service members were killed Thursday in a helicopter crash in western Iraq, the US military said.Army Brig. Gen. Jonathan P. SORRENTO VALLEY, Calif. (KGTV) - A Marine veteran suffered major injuries after a wrong-way driver crashed into him on I-5 early Saturday morning.Friends have identified the victim as Luis Maldonado. He was transported to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla. His service dog Jax, who was also in the car, was taken to an animal hospital and is expected to survive.The wrong-way driver died at the scene. California Highway Patrol suspects he was under the influence of alcohol. He has not been identified.Maldonado's friends have set up a GoFundMe account to help pay for the mounting medical costs.  622

SILVERADO CANYON (CNS) - A wind-driven brush fire in Silverado Canyon sparked by a house fire exploded to 7,200 acres Thursday, injuring two firefighters and growing rapidly as mandatory and voluntary evacuations were ordered for residents in a large portion of Orange County.The two firefighters injured worked for the Cleveland National Forest Service."They were treated on scene and transported to a local hospital," said Orange County Fire Authority Chief Brian Fennessy. "Their exact condition is unknown to me."Mandatory evacuations were in effect in the Modjeska, Silverado and Williams Canyon areas, Foothill Ranch and Portola Hills west of El Toro and north of the 241 Toll Road.Voluntary evacuations were issued for the following areas:-- Lake Forest, from the 241 Toll Road, along Bake Parkway to Musick and north to the border with Irvine and from the 241 Toll Road north to Bake Parkway to Foothill Ranch Community Ranch;-- Borrego Canyon;-- Baker Ranch;-- Portola Hills;-- Live Oak Canyon;-- Trabuco Canyon;-- Rose Canyon;-- Valley Vista Way;-- Meadow Ridge Drive;--Cowan and Lemon Heights.Evacuees were strongly encouraged to stay with family or friends or in a hotel, the OCFA said."Due to COVID-19, no congregate shelter is offered," the authority tweeted about 5:20 a.m. A temporary OC Red Cross evacuation point at Santiago Community College at 8405 E.
