LOS ANGELES (CNS) - The ShakeAlertLA app that drew criticism for not notifying users during the July 4 and 5 earthquakes will begin sending alerts for smaller quakes, officials announced Wednesday.Starting this month, the early warning system will alert residents of Garcetti, CalTech and the United States Geological Survey. The previous threshold was magnitude 5.0.``Every day we are communicating the importance of preparedness, so that every Angeleno has the tools and resources they need to build a better life, and then protect that life when disaster strikes,'' Garcetti said.``Updates to ShakeAlertLA will result in an even more responsive application, making our city stronger and our families safer.''The USGS ShakeAlert Earthquake Early Warning System for the West Coast detects significant earthquakes quick enough that ShakeAlerts can reach people a few seconds before shaking starts.``The USGS, through its scientific expertise, creates ShakeAlert earthquake early warnings, but in order to be successful, our public and private partners must develop technologies to use and distribute the alerts,'' said Doug Given, the USGS' earthquake early warning coordinator.ShakeAlertLA was developed in collaboration with USGS, AT&T and The Annenberg Foundation to combine USGS sensor network with mobile app technology, according to the Mayor's Office. It launched at the end of last year. When people receive a ShakeAlert notification, they are advised to take protective action, such as drop, cover and hold on.More information can be found at www.shakealert.org. 1582

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - A Panorama City girl is suing the Walt Disney Co. alleging she contracted Legionnaire's disease after a visit to Disneyland in 2017 to celebrate her mother's birthday. The girl's Los Angeles Superior Court negligence suit, filed Wednesday, seeks unspecified damages. The suit was brought on her behalf by her guardian. The suit does not state the girl's age and her lawyer, Joseph Finnerty, could not be immediately reached.A Disney representative could not be reached for comment.RELATED:Two additional Legionnaire's cases found in Disneyland guestsDisneyland shuts down cooling towers following Legionnaire's cases among guestsThe suit states that the girl and her family went to Disneyland on Oct. 13, 2017, where they observed her mother's birthday. Two weeks later, she developed a cough that worsened over time to include chills and a fever, the suit alleges."It seemed no matter what treatments were provided to Liana, she could not get rid of her sickness," the suit states. The girl was examined by an infectious-disease doctor at UCLA Mattel Children's Hospital and she was diagnosed with Legionnaire's disease, the suit states. The suit further states that in October 2017, Orange County health officials found several cases of other people who suffered Legionnaire's disease after visits to the Anaheim theme park. Disney linked the source to two cooling towers, but they were inadequately treated so as to eradicate the bacteria, the suit alleges. The girl's health continues to be negatively affected because of her infection, the suit states. 1580

LOS ANGELES (AP) — More than 325,000 doses of a COVID-19 vaccine are on their way to California on Sunday amid record-setting case numbers and shrinking intensive care unit capacity. The first shipments of the Pfizer vaccine left Michigan early Sunday. States will get vaccines based on their adult population and additional shipments are coming this week.In California, counties will have specific allotments that will be distributed to hospitals determined by state health officials to have adequate storage capacity, serve a high-risk health care population and have the ability to vaccinate people quickly. Priority will be to inoculate health care workers. 669

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - As COVID-19 cases surge, Covered California is urging uninsured residents to sign up for coverage by this Wednesday's deadline."Covered California is a critical safety net to help people get quality health care coverage during the surging pandemic and ongoing recession," said Covered California Executive Director Peter Lee. "With our first enrollment deadline coming up this week, we want to encourage anyone who needs coverage to check out their options and sign up so they can start the New Year with protection and peace of mind."Californians who want their coverage to start on Jan. 1 must sign up by Dec. 30, a deadline that was extended in response to the pandemic. However, the open enrollment period runs through Jan. 31. In either case, consumers will need to pay their first bill when enrolling.More than 1.2 million California residents are uninsured despite being eligible for financial help from Covered California or low-cost or no-cost coverage through Medi-Cal, according to Covered California."Most of the people who are uninsured either do not know they are eligible for financial assistance, or they have not checked recently to see how affordable quality coverage can be," Lee said. "No one should wait to sign up, and we are extending the deadline through Dec. 30 to give all of us more time to spread the word and make sure our family and friends have health insurance during this pandemic."Roughly nine out of 10 consumers who enroll through the Covered California marketplace receive either federal tax credits, state subsidies or both, helping to make health care more affordable. California subsidies benefit nearly 600,000 residents, including thousands who had previously been ineligible for financial help because they exceeded federal income limits.Of those eligible for subsidies, more than half are believed to be Latino, a group that has been disproportionately hard-hit by the pandemic. The average consumer receiving financial help with health insurance paid an average of 7 per month for coverage, with federal and state assistance reducing their costs by 4, according to Covered California.Covered California recently mailed masks to 1.5 million enrollees, and Lee urged every resident to use face coverings."Getting covered with a mask will help protect Californians and their families and friends; getting covered with a health plan will help protect people if they get sick," he said. "Covered California helps you get access to some of the best doctors and health care facilities in the country and provides peace of mind during these challenging times where there is so much uncertainty."The state individual mandate penalty will also return for 2021. Consumers who can afford health care coverage, but choose to go without, could pay a penalty when they file their state taxes in 2022. The penalty, administered by California's Franchise Tax Board, could be as much as ,250 for a family of four.To learn more about coverage options or compare rates, visit www.coveredca.com. 3054
