SANTO DOMINGO, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- The number of deaths caused by cholera in the Dominican Republic have increased to 109, and there are 15,876 suspect cases, according to government figures released on Friday.Public Health Ministry said in a statement that the intensity of the outbreak has been decreasing since six weeks ago, but the region of Gran Santo Domingo, which includes the Dominican capital city, still faces a serious epidemic situation.The government is developing preventive measures which include informing the population, careful observation of diarrhea cases, providing drinkable water and building new public toilets as part of efforts to contain the outbreak, it added.The latest Cholera outbreak appeared in the Dominican Republic last November, a month after cases were reported in Haiti.The Ministry said they stepped up efforts to monitor the situation after tropical storm "Emily" passed through parts of the country two weeks ago.After the beginning of the rain season, cholera cases have increased generally and all the public hospitals in the country are provided with supplies and medical staff to care for the people with symptoms of cholera or other tropical diseases.

XI'AN, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- At least 12 people were killed and 22 others missing over the weekend in rain-triggered landslides in northwestern Shaanxi Province, local officials said.As of 5:30 p.m. Sunday, rescuers had retrieved 10 bodies from beneath the rocks and mud in Baqiao District of the provincial capital of Xi'an, while another five were injured, said Zhu Zhisheng, vice mayor of Xi'an, who was at the site.Another 22 people remained missing, Zhu said, adding the injured were hospitalized and in stable condition.The landslide around 2 p.m. Saturday unleashed about 100,000 cubic meters of rock and mud down the mountain, engulfing a brick factory and destroying part of a nearby ceramics factory in the suburban district of Xi'an.Rescuers found four bodies on Saturday night and six others were retrieved on Sunday.More than 700 police, firefighters and local residents joined the rescue which went on Sunday night.However, the rescue was hampered by three ensuing slides between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. Sunday as heavy rains continued slashing the city.About 10,000 cubic meters of newly-triggered rock and mud roared down to the site, forcing rescuers to suspend searching temporarily.Heavy downpours in the province also caused havoc in other areas.A heavy rainfall on Saturday night triggered a landslide that buried a residential house in the suburban district of Jintai in Baoji City, some 175 km to the west of Xi'an.Two people were dug out but later died after they were rushed to a nearby hospital, the municipal government of Baoji said in a statement Sunday.The downpours also brought a landslide in the same district early Sunday morning. Three people were saved and sent to a local hospital, according to the statement.The three wounded were in stable condition, doctors at the hospital said.

SHENZHEN, June 18 (Xinhua) -- China established its first national gene bank on Friday in south China's city of Shenzhen with the support of the Beijing Genomics Institute (BGI), officials said.With the establishment of the National Gene Bank in Shenzhen, China will be able to better protect, research and utilize its precious genetic resources, boosting the genetics industry and safeguarding the country's genetic information, said Qi Chengyuan, head of the high-tech industry department of the National Development and Reform Committee (NDRC).The gene bank, which was approved by the NDRC in January, is based on data and facilities belonging to the BGI, but will grow with the help of extensive cooperation with other biological organizations both home and abroad, Qi said.The national gene bank "aims to lead the development of international bioindustry as one of the world's largest gene banks," said Yang Huanming, the BGI's president.The BGI, the world's largest genome-mapping institute, has more than 1,000 biological analysis devices working with top-of-the-line genome-sequencing machines.Analysts say the BGI differs from conventional labs, as it can handle data in vast quantities and industrialize its research. Some believe lower wages in China have also contributed to the BGI's competitiveness.Yang Bicheng, the BGI's spokesman, said the payment and welfare packages BGI offers are competitive in China's bioindustry."A researcher with about two years of experience earns around 100,000 yuan (15,440 U.S. dollars) a year. GENEVA, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- The World Health Organization (WHO) and the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) started an emergency vaccination campaign in all accessible areas of South and Central Somalia, WTO spokesperson Tarek Jasarevic said here on Friday.In July 2011 alone, 1,019 suspected measles cases and 31 related deaths were reported in South and Central Somalia, representing 20 percent of all reported cases for this year.The major factors for a measles outbreak in Somalia are low coverage, malnutrition, population movements, and overcrowed internally displaced (IDP) camps."WHO fears that the measles outbreak could affect a high number of people, especially among the vulnerable IDPs whose overall health is already fragile," Jasarevic said.About 2.5 million children aged between 6 and 15 in 10 regions of South and Central Somalia, including children in Mogadishu, will be targeted during this campaign.
