Facebook has taken down 652 pages, accounts and groups it says were part of a coordinated disinformation campaign. Some of the pages originated in Iran and Russia.The pages and groups were spreading misinformation in the United States, United Kingdom, Latin America and the Middle East while posing as a group called "Liberty Front Press."It also removed content that is says could be traced to groups previously connected to Russian military services. ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) — As San Diego County rolls back again into the more-restrictive purple tier, the city of Escondido is coming together to make sure their small businesses survive the newest rollback.In Escondido, Carol Rogers is involved with the Downtown Business Association and the Chamber of Commerce, plus she also owns Stone and Glass, a glass blowing shop. She said everyone has been feeling the impact for the past eight months, but they’re finding ways to adapt.For her glass store, she said online sales have been what kept her afloat.RELATED: San Diego County moves into California's COVID-19 purple tier, new state data shows“Our online sales are phenomenal. It’s what’s kept us in business. It is the only thing that’s kept us in business,” said Rogers.She said she and the organizations she works with have created different plans to help all small businesses. During the summer, they closed down a lane of traffic along the main street and added cement barricades, creating a space for stores to add tables to the sidewalks. Some types of businesses were able to use the space, but others were not.“What we found is the restaurants did it. I works for the restaurants, but retail is not using the space,” she said, discussing the outdoor sidewalk addition.In the spirit of unity, they decided to not waste the outdoor space, so Rogers created an art walk that happened Saturday, Nov. 14. Artists and creators were able to move into unused street space and host pop-up shops, giving them business that has been missing since their local Second Saturday stopped in March.In addition to the stores moving outside and artists popping up for a Saturday afternoon, the community has also stepped up to add life to the cement barricades that block off the outdoor sidewalk space. Starting in the summer, a few cement blocks were painted by artists, and that has continued. Now, Grand Avenue is lined with multi-colored pieces of art.“There’s been professional artists, there’s been people that just want to paint, there’s children,” said artist Tristan Pittard, who was working on his cement canvas Saturday.Pittard said the art is an additional motivator for people to visit the area and support local businesses.“Art in general affects peoples psyche and public art is important for that because people might not be exposed to art otherwise,” said Pittard.For Rogers, the combination of the art walk with the painted cement shows the unity of the people, and gives her hope that Escondido will survive another rollback. She said she hopes the art walk will become a monthly event.“The more that we can do this, we believe the more people will come. This makes people comfortable. We’re outside. We’re far apart. And that is exactly what happened to a mother and daughter duo from Escondido. Ruth and Emilia have had to find other ways to perform their environmentally themed music."It's always entertaining, you never know what is going to happen."The two have a love for children's music, as their lyrics, and performances always provide a learning experience for their young audience."We have two messages in our music," says Ruth. "One is taking care of the environment, and the other is acceptance of others to make the world a better place." Emilia says one other goal is also to keep the music fun and lively. "So that it would be something grown-ups don't mind listening to in the car, but also that kids enjoy dancing to."Prior to the pandemic, Ruth and Emilia planned a summer tour of libraries, children's museums, and kids festivals, but when the Coronavirus hit, those plans changed."Our CD release party was canceled because it happened the same day all the stay at home starting taking place."So the duo has had to adapt, and change the way they could reach their audience."We found other outlets, like doing live shows on Facebook and on Instagram. And even seeing if we could expand to people we wouldn't necessarily see on our tour."However, some good news came from the pandemic, as it brought mother and daughter closer together. Emilia has made her way back to Escondido for the time being, from her home in Los Angeles. "We don't get to see each other everyday," says Emilia. "Now, Ruth and Emilia as a unit, can flourish some new stuff that we haven't been able to do, but have been wanting to do for a while." 1754

Farmers across the country are hard at work preparing their summer harvest. After a devastating spring, they're seeing the market may be picking back up."We did see kind of a dip in produce buying in that mid-April period, a pretty significant dip in produce buying. But we began to normalize and climb out of that dip as we headed into May," said Ian Lemay, the President of the California Fresh Fruit Association.Lemay said farmers are now cautiously optimistic about the summer harvest, which is full of stone fruits like peaches, nectarines and plums."As long as the consumer has been able to make it into the grocery store, which as shelter in place has been eased, we've seen a bit more of a normalization of purchasing habits," Lemay said.When the COVID-19 pandemic first hit, some farmers were forced to throw out their crops or leave them in the fields to rot as supply chains crumbled, and demand quickly shifted. Some farmers can adjust their crops according to demand. Others, like stone fruit growers, have permanent crops like trees and vines that will produce fruit no matter what is happening to the market."We don't have the ability to throttle back or stop the harvest," said Tricia Stever Blattler, the Executive Director of the Tulare County Farm Bureau in California. "A permanent orchard that grows stone fruit like nectarines and peaches, plums or grapes, and certainly we can't tell our dairy cows to stop giving milk."Blattler said packing houses are facing longer production times due to new COVID-19 safety processes, but they're still able to put out plenty of produce. She is concerned, though, that the economic downturn will affect what shoppers buy at the grocery stores."Specialty produce, fresh eating produce will suffer and be less chosen. Less than it would in a good economic cycle," Blatter said. "People are going to buy the canned goods and more affordable choices at the grocery store and maybe skip some of those items that they see to be a little bit pricier like specialty crops."Farmers will also be at the whim of international markets, as many export up to 40% of their produce. The California Fresh Fruit Association is also hopeful that schools will be open in the coming months, as much of their fruit goes into a number of school lunch programs."We're hoping that meaningful plans by different educational institutions can be laid out, and maybe schools are back operating this fall," Lemay said. "We obviously like to get fresh fruit in the hands of children, and if they're not in school, it gets a little bit more difficult."As for what the near future holds for produce farming, many are hopeful that demand will continue. 2686
