However, most public schools in the county are continuing in distance learning.“It’s tiring, to say the least,” said teacher Kelly Martin. She teachers in the Chula Vista Elementary School District.Dawn Harrison also teaches in that district. While she dealt with some technical problems with her first-grade class, she said “it went better than I thought it would go.”Martin said she has been able to make connections with her students even through a computer screen. She also met virtually with each student one-on-one.“It’s been a challenge with tech issues outside of our control… people’s cameras aren’t working, people’s microphones aren’t working. I feel like besides being a teacher, I’ve taken on the role of tech support!” Martin said.ABC 10News first checked in with the teachers at the end of July before the school year started. Since then, Harrison said she has dealt with a rollercoaster of emotions. “Fear, anxiety, stress, a little bit of excitement,” Harrison said.She’s not the only one in her household dealing with an unusual school year. Her husband, Rick Meads, is a teacher at Eastlake High School.“I have 160 students or so. I see most of them every day. There are some that are still struggling with access,” Meads said.He teaches theater, drama, and digital arts. While he said he is missing out on the personal interaction with students, he is adjusting his curriculum.“Instead of doing a fall play this year, we’re going to do a radio show. They’re writing their own script. It’s going to be a Halloween, scary type of thing,” Meads said.They all say being in the classroom with their students is easier that distance learning, which involves a lot more preparation.“I’m definitely working longer hours. The good part is I have no commute,” Martin said.As far as when they will feel comfortable conducting in-person classes again, there is no definitive answer.Meads said it will be a challenge to keep social distance between students. “It’s a nightmare thinking of going back unless it’s really safe,” Meads said. “I really haven’t spent too much time thinking about going back yet. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The USS Midway Museum is celebrating 15 years in San Diego with a ticket discount offer for area residents. The deal announced Tuesday is rolling back admission to 2004 prices during the month of September. Tickets are for adults and seniors, and for youth and students. “Midway would not be the 5th most-popular American museum of any type (35,000 museums) if it were not for the nearly 800 San Diegans who donate more than 275,000 hours annually,” said founding president and CEO Mac McLaughlin. “They are the rock stars of Midway and the foundation of its success.” September marks the 74th anniversary of the USS Midway’s commissioning. The retired aircraft carrier opened as a museum in June 2004 after a 12-year campaign. The ship has been host to special events including an SDSU basketball game, an NFL pregame show, and episodes of The Bachelor and American Idol. The Midway is the most-visited ship museum in the world and the top-rated San Diego activity according to TripAdvisor, the museum reports. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego Workforce Partnership is accepting applications for its income-sharing agreement, which only requires graduates to pay back the cost if they make at least ,000 a year.San Diegans have about a month to apply online for the program, which offers certificates in User Experience Design, Database Management, or Java Programming through UCSD Extension. The priority application period ends Aug. 2. Ellie Solorio is about to complete the program in Front End Development. She just landed a job at Petco, doubling her pay from her prior positions, such as in retail and administrative work."I mean it hasn't even sunk in yet really, but it's a complete sense of hope at the end that there are things I need to take care of and now I will be able to," she said.Participants get access to education and career services, which is paid for through the fund. Then, once they are done, they begin making payments based on their income for 36 to 60 months. Graduates make payments of 6% to 8% of their annual salary only if they are earning at least ,000. The money goes back into the fund that pays for the next group of cohorts. "With a student loan you're paying that back regardless of whether or not you are securing a job upon graduation," said Adrienne Chuck, an Income Share Agreement Analyst with the San Diego Workforce Partnership.
