SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- Today is the peak travel day for the Thanksgiving holiday. AAA expects more than 54 million Americans to travel more than 50 miles from home this season. While many are dreading the drive, others have chosen to take the rails.Gary Green was visiting his friend in San Diego for the last few days. But he is making the trip back to Los Angeles on the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner. "The car is a painful experience. The 405 is obnoxious. The 101 is obnoxious. People are miserable, and it's the wrong time of year for that," Green said. While motorists are thankful that gas is about SAN DIEGO (KGTV)— Some people in San Diego are still feeling the shakes after yesterday's Ridgecrest Earthquake. It is prompting concerns about activity along San Diego County's own fault lines. Living in California, we can never say, "We never saw it coming." But seismologists said yesterday's quake was very rare. "It comes along here [points at map] and meets another fault perpendicular, and that's not typically what I work on or what I've seen before," Scripps Institute of Oceanography seismologist, Dr. Debi Kilb, said.The epicenter was not close to California's most known and large fault line, the San Andreas. "This is where our main 6.4 [Magnitude quake] occurred," Dr. Kilb said. "You can see, it's not on any of these really well-known faults. So it's occurring on a fault that's unmapped or unknown."Here in San Diego, there are also many smaller, lesser-known fault lines, like the Rose Canyon Fault. It meets the shore near La Jolla, travels right underneath Interstate 5, through Downtown San Diego, and exits out of the Silver Strand. Dr. Kilb said the Rose Canyon Fault has been seismically inactive since before 1900. The more active fault locally is the San Jacinto Fault near Anza Boreggo. But if a quake were to emerge out of Rose Canyon, it could potentially be very damaging to our area. Being along the coast, San Diego could be under water. "Yes, you can definitely get a tsunami from that," Dr. Kilb said. However, she said a tsunami is most likely in San Diego, after a massive earthquake near an active fault, off the Oregon or Washington Coast. In preparation, the City of San Diego is retrofitting many buildings, like the iconic California Tower in Balboa Park. By the end of the seven-month construction project, the Tower should be able to withstand a significant quake. But aside from buildings and bridges, Dr. Kilb said WE should always be preparing for the next "Big One.""Now is a good time to just look around and say, 'Is there anything breakable on my shelves that I should take down? Are the bookcases actually secure to the ground?' So just do a walkthrough," Dr. Kilb said. You are also encouraged to talk with your family about an emergency plan and have a 3-day emergency kit ready for every family member, including pets. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - Skies across the country filled with messages of change this Fourth of July weekend, including in San Diego. In Plain Sight is a national movement by about 80 artists with a goal of abolishing Immigration Detention Centers. Artists designed messages, then air crews drew those words in the sky.In San Diego, Pedro Rios, the American Friends Service Committee Director, said doing it on the holiday weekend was intentional.“As we’re contemplating the meeting of this weekend and this holiday, we should take into consideration what independence really means when there are tens of thousands of people that are detained right now,” said Rios.Locally, five locations were chosen over spots that have immigration facilities, from downtown down to the border. Individual artists were assigned to each location to create the specific messages.“We need to have conversations that question that and I think this artistic endeavor, In Plain Sight, is part of a larger dialogue of how we converse, of whether detention and incarceration is a best representation of who we are as people living in the United States,” said Rios, a Chula Vista native. 1173

It's a saying at the heart of a new experiment called itsblackandwhite.us.Ryan Berman, along with Ahab Nimry and several other marketing and advertising agency representatives say they wanted to figure out how to start a constructive conversation about things like race, implicit bias and equity."For one, getting perspective and understanding a bias you might have because you can't do anything about it if you can't spot it," said Berman.So they came up with a 10 question, online survey that asks things like, "Do you believe hard work puts you on your path for a promotion?Do you have a close friend that is black?""We're not trying to nudge you one way or the other, we're just trying to say hey pick a side lets start talking and work this out," explained Nimry.At the end, you get to see how other people responded and access links to learn more, donate to civil rights organizations, even register to vote.The creators say the idea is to share what they learn and then take all that data and develop a sort of "seal of approval" for consumers to know how different companies stack up."Launching almost a diversity/inclusion certification for organizations," said Berman. "It's not about calling out companies. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Roger Francis, also known as Francis Love, died two years ago at the age of 70. He was a marine who served in the Vietnam War. When he died, his family discovered about 300 paintings from over the years and as of a few months ago his sister, Peggy Starns found a gallery to host an art show. "He goes what are you going to do with all these paintings and I said I don’t now we already gave a bunch to the church."For a period of his life, Love was homeless. "He was homeless for about 20 years and then he finally hooked up with VA and then he got some living expenses and was in the studio,” his sister tells 10News. After being homeless for two decades, he grew close with the community and continued to donate after he got his own apartment. Two years since his death, all proceeds from the art show on Friday will go to the Alpha Project to help San Diego’s homeless. 250 paintings will be for sale at Good Friday Gallery located downtown at 556 19th Street.
