PHOENIX — From top restaurants to moving companies, you have probably used Yelp before to find businesses to use. But have you ever thought to use the website to find a daycare?The site can sometimes be a dumping ground for complaints. So, is it credible when looking for someone to look after a child? Researchers at Arizona State University decided to find out.The study included 40 cities and roughly 50,000 submissions on nearly 10,000 childcare facilities. Three of those 40 cities were Phoenix, Mesa and Tucson.Researchers tell KNXV even they were shocked by the findings.They found, through the reviews, that a majority of parents were meticulous and detailed. More than 75 percent gave a 5-star review.As for why they decided research like this was important, ASU said they wanted to see exactly what parents were looking for in childcare, what they were saying in these reviews and how uncovering that could lead to policy changes that could benefit all children.But, despite overwhelmingly positive reviews, lower-income families often reported more bad experiences, disrespect and a lack of learning for their children.Chris Herbst, an associate professor at ASU, was deeply involved in this study. He hopes this research will encourage parents to keep documenting their experiences."It provides this sort of learning loop for childcare providers," Herbst explained. "So, if providers know the parents... feel a certain way about the program, then providers can use this information to inform their... quality improvement activities."While these reviews are a good start, Herbst stresses that parents have plenty of tools they can use, beyond just basing it on online reviews.One suggestion he gives is using the Quality Rating and Improvement System.Parents can search their state and look-up different facilities to see how this system evaluates and rates the program's quality.KNXV also reached out to Erin Raden for more tools and advice for parents. She is the executive director of the Arizona Early Childhood Education Association.In regards to using online reviews like Yelp, Raden said it is good to use. However, it should not be the only way you make a childcare decision."You may have a parent that's upset about something," Raden said. "And that might be the right choice for them to no longer take their child there. But that doesn't mean that it wouldn't be the right choice for you."Raden also suggests taking your time and visiting at least two or three facilities."It's just going to be a lot about what feels right to you and you should always trust your instincts," Raden explained.She said that it is not about a facility being the most beautiful place, but instead look at how the students are engaged with their instructors. 2826

Participating in a town hall discussion on Monday in the key battleground state of Florida, Joe Biden said he would implement a mandate of masks on federal property if elected president amid the coronavirus pandemic. The mandate would apply to places such as national buildings, Social Security offices and federal courthouses. Charlie Dent announced Tuesday he is resigning in the "coming weeks," a decision that came after he first said he'd be retiring at the end of his term in Congress.The moderate Republican tweeted the decision came after discussions with his family and "careful reflection.""I am especially proud of the work I have done to give voice to the sensible center in our country that is often overlooked or ignored," he said in the statement. "It is my intention to aggressively advocate for responsible governance and pragmatic solutions in the coming years."In a statement Tuesday, Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf, a Democrat, thanked Dent for his service."Charlie Dent is a voice of reason and civility that breaks through the chaos and partisanship of Washington and he will be missed," he said.The governor's office also announced that there will be a special election to fill Dent's seat, but no set date yet.The Pennsylvania Supreme Court's February order creating new congressional districts in the commonwealth beginning next term included language that, if there were to be a special congressional election before the new term next January, it would be held under the 2011 congressional district map.Already, 43 House Republicans have announced this cycle they are retiring, running for another office or resigning outright, including Dent and House Speaker Paul Ryan. At first, they started by simply selling them online, but it quickly snowballed from there, right into area Walmart stores.“I had no idea that that one cheesecake would change everything,” Wright said.Now, they’re going a step further. At National Harbor near Washington, D.C. they just opened their first physical storefront.“So, we started our business during a furlough and we opened a store during a pandemic,” Wright said. “It makes us sound crazy, honestly, but it just happened this way.”They are fortunate. PEORIA, AZ - An Amber Alert for a 2-year-old girl abducted from Peoria Monday morning has been canceled after the girl was found safe several hours later. According to Peoria police, Khaleesi Morales was taken by her non-custodial father, 32-year-old Luis Jesus Morales, around 6 a.m. from a residence near Lake Pleasant and Beardsley roads.Luis is the defendant on an Order or Protection not to have contact with the girl or her mother. According to officials, Luis was arrested and booked into jail by Peoria police Sunday night after violating that Order of Protection, but was released at 5:14 a.m. on Monday.Police said Luis went to the child's Peoria home Monday morning, opened a window, broke the screen out, stepped on his young son's hand and assaulted the mother before taking Khaleesi. He reportedly stole the mother's vehicle and headed southbound on Lake Pleasant Road. Police say there were several box knives in the stolen vehicle. An Amber Alert was issued around 8 a.m. Monday for Khaleesi.Around 1 p.m., police said the Peoria SWAT team was able to locate the girl and Luis at a business near 99th Avenue and Beardsley Road, just a short distance from where the toddler was abducted. Khaleesi was "safe and unharmed" and was asking for her mother. Luis was taken into custody without incident.Khaleesi was reunited with her mother at the Peoria Police Department Monday afternoon. Luis is being charged with kidnapping, burglary, aggravated assault, violation of a court order and auto theft.
