SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man who sexually trafficked a 15-year-old girl in the San Diego area was sentenced today to 15 years in federal custody. Joseph Price, 24, of San Diego, convinced the victim to post an online advertisement offering sex and drove her to meet with customers throughout San Diego County, according to court documents. The complaint filed last year states that the girl took part in the commercial sex acts on nearly a dozen occasions last summer and all of the money she earned went to Price. She also told investigators that on one occasion, when she did not want to engage in certain sex acts that the customer -- or ``john'' -- requested, Price struck her in the face.Price was arrested last August by San Diego police in connection with a parole violation stemming from a first-degree burglary conviction. He was later charged with sex trafficking of a minor by federal prosecutors and pleaded guilty last December. As part of his plea, Price also admitted to meeting two other underage girls over social media and encouraging them to take part in sex acts for money. The U.S. Attorney's Office said one of the girls did so and sent the money she made to Price, who encouraged both girls to leave their families in Texas and travel to San Diego to continue working for him.``Sex trafficking of teenagers targets some of the most vulnerable individuals in our community, and leaves in its wake trauma that can affect victims for the rest of their lives,'' said U.S. Attorney Robert Brewer. ``The U.S. Attorney's Office is deeply committed to ensuring that justice is done for the victims of these horrible crimes.'' 1641

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - As his trial entered its eighth week, a man who shot at officers from his ex-girlfriend's condominium in Bankers Hill pleaded guilty to four counts of assault with a firearm on a peace officer and agreed to a 20-year prison sentence, it was confirmed Thursday.Titus Colbert, 36, faces formal sentencing May 18 before Judge Louis Hanoian.Deputy District Attorney Michael Runyon was about to wrap up his case when Colbert decided to plead guilty Monday afternoon.Charges of premeditated attempted murder of a peace officer and assault with a semiautomatic weapon were dismissed.RELATED: Suspect in Bankers Hill standoff that shut down Lindbergh Field in courtRunyon said in his opening statement that Colbert took two rifles and a revolver belonging to his roommate in Las Vegas and showed up at his former girlfriend's condo in Bankers Hill a few days before his Nov. 4, 2015, arrest.According to Runyon, the morning of the shooting, Colbert's ex- girlfriend Ashley Davies realized that he'd had broken into her complex and sent him a text saying: "You're trespassing! You're going to jail!"Colbert responded by texting, "(Expletive), I'm going to be a star. (Expletive) you for putting my life in danger," the prosecutor said. When officers responded to Davies' sixth-floor condo near the roof of the complex, a shot rang out from behind her door and an officer returned fire, according to Runyon. The prosecutor said officers retreated and more shots were fired at them and members of a SWAT team.Hours later, police observed a rifle, revolver and a magazine for a rifle being thrown out of the window where Colbert was holed up, Runyon said. After Colbert's arrest, officers found 17 expended casings and another rifle under a pile of clothes in the room, the prosecutor said.Even though traces of cocaine and methamphetamine were found in Colbert's system, and even though he had a history of mental health issues, the defendant knew what he was doing that day, Runyon said.Defense attorney Melissa Tralla told the jury that Colbert had a psychotic break and was paranoid and delusional. She said that days before, Colbert had called Davies at least 50 times and was not acting right.Colbert was rambling, saying he had special powers and was part of the New World Order, Tralla said. The attorney said Colbert was showing signs of mental illness by age 6, and was diagnosed with schizophrenia by age 15. Tralla told the jury that Colbert did not intend or plan to kill officers that day. 2518

SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- A prominent local civil rights leader called on the San Diego County Sheriff's Department Monday to fire a deputy who allegedly shared a "lewd and racist and vile" altered photograph of George Floyd taken from the viral video of the Minnesota man's death in police custody. The doctored image showed a nude male "porn star" kneeling on Floyd in place of Minneapolis police Officer Derek Chauvin, who kept his knee on Floyd's neck for nearly nine minutes as the detainee repeatedly protested that he could not breathe, according to NAACP San Diego Branch President Francine Maxwell. Floyd died on Memorial Day.The words "quit resisting" also were added to the picture, Maxwell asserted in a prepared statement.RELATED: Sheriff's employee removed after reportedly sharing vulgar image"The image was lewd and racist and vile and should disturb anyone with a shred of human decency," Maxwell said. "It is simply unacceptable (behavior for) a law enforcement officer."The deputy, whose name has not been confirmed by the Sheriff's Department, allegedly shared the photo via email, according to Maxwell. On June 18, he was suspended pending the completion of an internal investigation into the matter, said Lt. Ricardo Lopez, media relations director for the regional law enforcement agency."We were so disgusted that an employee may have shared such a vulgar image that within minutes we began to take action," Lopez stated. "Hours after being made aware of this incident, the employee was removed from his official duties and had his peace officer authority removed."In calling for the deputy's ouster, Maxwell also cited his shootings of suspects in 2005 and 2006, describing them as excessive and unjustifiable uses of lethal force. She said the lawman "must go" because "this is far from the first time he has shown himself to be an overtly racist and deplorable human being" and because "this (doctored-photo) incident shows he has clearly not changed his evil, racist and hate-filled ways and (that) he is a danger to all residents of the county."The sheriff's spokesman said the department's leaders "understand the public concern" over the episode and "want to bring the matter to a just conclusion as soon as possible." Lopez said."The Sheriff's Department does not tolerate any ... actions by its employees that are a detriment to our core values," Lopez asserted in a statement issued Monday. 2424
