WASHINGTON, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- U.S. researchers have found a way to block, in an animal model, the damaging inflammation that contributes to many disease conditions. In their report receiving early online publication Sunday in Nature Biotechnology, researchers describe using small interfering RNA technology to silence the biochemical signals that attract a particular group of inflammatory cells to areas of tissue damage."The white blood cells known as monocytes play a critical role in the early stages of the immune response," says Matthias Nahrendorf, of the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Center for Systems Biology, the paper's senior author. "We now know there are two subsets of monocytes -- an inflammatory subset that defends against pathogens and a reparative subset that supports healing. But if the inflammatory response is excessive, it can block the healing process and exacerbate conditions such as heart disease and cancer."Cells damaged by injury or disease release a cocktail of chemicals called cytokines that attract immune cells to the site of the damage. Inflammatory monocytes are guided to sites of tissue injury by a receptor protein called CCR2, and the MGH-led team devised a strategy targeting that molecule to block the inflammatory process but not the action of the reparative monocytes.Small interfering RNA (siRNA) technology prevents production of specific proteins by binding to associated messenger RNA molecules and preventing their translation. However, the technique requires extreme precision in developing the right siRNA molecule and delivering it to the correct cellular location.To make sure that their siRNA preparation targeted the right monocytes, researchers first confirmed that its use reduced levels of CCR2 in monocytes and increased levels of the fragments produced when siRNA binds to its target. They then showed that monocytes from mice treated with the siRNA preparation were unable to migrate towards CCR2's usual molecular target. Experiments in animal models of several important diseases showed that the siRNA preparation reduced the amount of cardiac muscle damaged by a heart attack, reduced the size and the number of inflammatory cells in atherosclerotic plaques and in lymphomas, and improved the survival of transplanted pancreatic islets."These inflammatory monocytes are involved in almost every major disease," Nahrendorf explains. "Anti-inflammatory drugs currently on the market hit every inflammatory cell in the body, which can produce unwanted side effects. This new siRNA treatment doesn't affect inflammatory cells that don't rely on the CCR2 receptor. That makes a big difference."

The separation of the satellite from the rocket was scheduled for 08:23 Moscow time (0423 GMT) on Saturday.The AsiaSat-7 which belongs to the Asia Satellite Telecommunications Company Limited (AsiaSat) located in Hong Kong, China, is a new generation satellite designed to replace AsiaSat 3S at the orbital location of 105.5 degrees East.The new satellite was expected to support a broad range of applications for the Asia-Pacific region, including television broadcast and VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) networks.

But there is still a long way to go to apply them in reality, said Professor Kitney.

  

BRUSSELS, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) --- The European Commission on Friday gave the green light to Microsoft's acquisition of voice and video communication provider Skype, thus removing the last hurdle in the process.According to a statement released by the Commission, "the deal would not significantly impede effective competition in the European Economic Area (The EU plus Iceland, Lichtenstein and Norway) or any substantial part of it."The Commission explained that it found that in the area of consumer communications, the parties' activities overlap in video communications, where Microsoft is active through its Windows Live Messenger.However, the Commission considered that there were no competition concerns in this growing market where numerous other players, including Google, were present.Skype was bought by eBay in 2005 at the price of 4.1 billion U.S. dollars, and sold out at 2.75 billion U.S. dollars in 2009. SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) -- Apple on Friday said it will "continue to investigate" the unexpected iPhone battery drain as some users still see the problems after downloading a latest software update designed to address the issues."The recent iOS software update addressed many of the battery issues that some customers experienced on their iOS 5 devices. We continue to investigate a few remaining issues," said Apple in a statement made to technology news site AllThingsD.Apple released iOS 5.0.1, an update to its latest mobile operating system iOS 5 on Thursday. The update includes fixes for some bugs which are blamed for shortening the battery life of iPhones and other devices that use the system.Some users said the battery life of their iPhones look much better after the update. But according to some posts on Apple's official support forums, some iPhone owners still claimed the issue is persisting, saying they saw no difference at all after downloading the update.Complaints about the battery life of Apple's latest iPhone 4S smartphone have been piling up on the Internet in the past weeks.On Apple's official support forums, some iPhone 4S owners said their handsets' battery drained more than 10 percent every hour, even when in standby mode with some advanced features like Siri and location services completely deactivated.It is reported that Apple engineers contacted some iPhone 4S owners in Britain and installed a diagnosis file on their devices to send details back to the company's headquarters in Cupertino, California.Apple confirmed the iPhone battery issue last Wednesday, saying that a few bugs in the iOS system have caused the problem and it will release a software update in a few weeks.
