SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A staph infection led to the amputation of a 3-year-old boy's legs weeks after his family arrived in San Diego for a vacation.The Baumkirschners and some friends arrived in their RVs from Arizona in early October and immediately set up camp along Mission Bay.3-year-old Beauden and his two older sisters were part of a group that went for a ride on their bikes."He fell off his bike and scratched his knee. We put on antibacterial spray with a band-aid, and off we went," said his father Brian Baumkirschner.Baumkirschner says Beauden spent the next few hours riding bikes, running around, and at one point, playing in the dirt. Early in the evening, Beauden told him he wasn't feeling well."He said, 'My tummy hurts. Is it bedtime?'" said Baumkirschner.The next morning, Beauden woke up with a fever and eventually started favoring his right leg, where he had a scrape just under his knee. When he became lethargic the next day, his parents rushed him to urgent care, and then Rady Children's Hospital. Brian says his son's right knee was swelling up and turned purple."It started spreading up, his legs, down his leg, in his arms, and down to this hands," said Baumkirschner.Baumkirschner says doctors eventually diagnosed Beauden with a MSSA staph infection. Another type of staph infection, MRSA, is more associated with bacteria in the bloodstream."They kept telling us that there was swelling. All of his extremities are shutting down," said Baumkirschner.Beauden had developed a complication: toxic shock syndrome. His little body started to shut down. Beauden developed sepsis. His kidneys started to fail."It's been every parent’s worst nightmare. You can’t do anything. You’re helpless," said Baumkirschner.There were several leg surgeries to relieve the pressure. Baumkirschner says there were some harrowing days, but his son pulled through. On Monday, doctors had to amputate his legs below the knee.Baumkirschner says he's just grateful is son is alive. He's optimistic Beauden's arms and hands can be saved.Baumkirschner says doctors at Rady Children's Hospital told him similar serious staph infections are rare, and they only a see a few cases every year.Doctors also couldn't pinpoint exactly when or where Beauden contracted the staph bacteria.A Gofundme campaign has been set up to help with the family with expenses. 2365

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An Escondido man has devoted his time during this pandemic to helping San Diego County’s homeless youth get back on the right track.Michael Shaw is the executive director of Southern California Youth Emergency Services (SoCalYES). He first spoke with ABC 10News in August while he was helping out a young man named Caleb, who found himself homeless on the streets of San Diego.“He reached out to people in our community online asking for help, he had his car stolen from him, and he had nowhere to go,” explained Shaw.SoCalYES quickly responded, and soon after, the young man had a roof over his head, a new car, and a job. He has since moved back to his home state to be with his family.“Caleb is doing great, he’s working full time, he has his vehicle still, he’s back with his family, he’s happy,” said Shaw. “When these young people need help, they need help right now. They don’t need help next week; they don’t need help in two weeks, they don’t need help when a bed becomes available. They need help now. Our big thing is immediate services,” he said.During this pandemic, Shaw and his team have been able to help more homeless youth across our county.After the ABC 10News story aired in August, Shaw said more people became aware of the services SoCalYES provides.“We had a young mother in Chula vista with a one-year-old baby who was actually sleeping outside; we were able to help her,” he said. “We’ve helped quite a few people. The amount of people since that story aired is tremendous; it’s a lot.”The SoCalYES team drives around in an outreach van, handing out meals and hygiene kits often. The main goal, though, is to connect those in need with the services already out there.“I saw the need, and I saw that there’s a lot of services already available it was just kind of connecting those services, connecting the dots. Especially during this pandemic, the ages of the kids that need help on the streets are younger and younger. We’re living through something I never even imagined, and the need is so real,” said Shaw.He started SoCalYES in 2019, connecting those in need with the services already out there, but helping others is nothing new for him.“At 10, 11-years-old I was volunteering at Palomar Continuing Care Center, Palomar Hospital Emergency Room, I was there for two or three years. San Pasqual Volunteer Fire Department, Rady Children’s Hospital, Ronald McDonald House, it’s something I’ve done for a long time, it’s something I enjoy doing.”During a time where things are difficult for so many, Shaw takes comfort in knowing when people are down, others will always be there to pick them right back up.“It’s not just me, you know, there’s a lot of people in the background making things happen,” he said. “We’ve noticed an uptick in people who really want to help.”SoCalYES is holding a “Holiday Heroes Toy Drive” for Christmas.They have identified more than 100 less-fortunate youth and asked each person to create a Christmas wish list with a few items. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego mom is hoping the county's new plan to provide more affordable housing will help keep her off the street. Leticia Rodriguez, her mom, and two kids have been living in Rodriguez's van the last several months, but right now the van is in the shop. They're hoping to get into the San Diego Rescue Mission. It would be their first time sleeping at a shelter."You have to come back at  5 ' o'clock and line up and you know, wait to get in, every day, until you get a bed," said Rodriguez. Rodriguez makes  an hour as a team leader at Jack N' The Box. She's been looking for a place she can afford for more than a year. "You can get a studio for 0 then you're lucky, but then they say how many are you? Then they say, that's too many," said Rodriguez. Tuesday the San Diego County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to set up a million dollar trust fund for the county to use to invest in affordable housing. The vote followed a brief presentation by staff detailing the housing-related hurdles in the San Diego region, including that more than 3,500 affordable units have been lost in the last 20 years. 1192

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Amazing artwork emerged after looters damaged windows and buildings following the peaceful protests in La Mesa in May. Many of the paintings were removed during restoration. Now, two local organizations are coming together to help artists preserve their pieces.The Preserve Community Art! Program is an initiative put on by the Balboa Art Conservation Center and ARTS, which stands for A Reason to Survive."We thought really hard about what we can do to contribute to the conversation beyond just making a statement of solidarity," says Bianca Garcia with the BACC.The pieces they are trying to preserve emerged from local social justice movements in our community illustrated by local artists."The art that is coming out of the movements, black lives matter, is sitting at the forefront," says James Halliday, Executive Director of ARTS. "We see the murals and writings of those words on public streets; it creates a really interesting dynamic."Halliday says the pieces are important because they capture moments in time and show the generation's demands.The BACC says that it won't just be displayed in the museums because of the uniqueness of the artwork.If there are any local artists interested in preserving their work with the program, they can email program directors at communityarts@bacc.org. 1330

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Americans are voting once again, and while the 2020 campaign has been contentious, our political process is a matter of perspective.Iraqi immigrant Saba Yousif became a U.S citizen in 2018, along with her parents and four of her five siblings. Yousif will be voting for the first time.Yousif told ABC 10News anchor Kimberly Hunt that due to the persecution back in Baghdad and not having the freedom to truly make a difference in election, this election -- to her -- is “precious.”The American system is something everyone all over the world admires, according to Yousif.She said as Chaldean Iraqis, her family finally feels true freedom.Even her parents are sharing her joy because they will be voting in their first presidential election here. They’ve all enjoyed having the right to express their opinions, have discussions, hear the candidates’ views, and make a choice at the ballot box.“I feel blessed to be a citizen of this country. We left and came here for a reason, and I think the most important is freedom of choice,” Yousif said. 1071
