Taiwanese breeder You Xueyin feeds giant pandas Tuantuan and Yuanyuan, a couple of pandas the mainland has promised to send to Taiwan, at a panda breeding base in Ya'an City in southeast China's Sichuan Province on Dec. 22, 2008, one day ahead of their scheduled departure. The panda pair will take a chater flight to go to Taiwan on Tuesday if the weather condition is ok.     YA'AN, Sichuan, Dec. 23 (Xinhua) -- A pair of giant pandas offered by the Chinese mainland left here Tuesday for Taiwan.     The pandas left Ya'an, Sichuan, at around 8:20 a.m. in an enclosed truck. They would first be transported to Sichuan's provincial capital of Chengdu, about 120 km from Ya'an, and then be flown to Taiwan.     Before their departure, the pandas had their breakfast – carrot and steamed corn buns.     A brief ceremony was held at the Bifeng Gorge Base in Ya'an before the pair's departure.     Zhang Hemin, director of the giant panda protection center, said at the ceremony he hoped the pair would bring happiness to Taiwan compatriots.     The 4-year-old pandas, Tuan Tuan and Yuan Yuan, have been living at a breeding base in Ya'an, Sichuan Province, since the May 12 strong earthquake which damaged their former home in Wolong.     Qu Chunmao, the pair's keeper in Ya'an, spoke in tears, "I wish them a happy life in Taiwan."     A Taiwan keeper, who would accompany the pair to the island, said the pandas were in good condition.     "They had a good breakfast to sustain them on the long journey," she said.

BEIJING, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) -- The pursuit of harmony is a basic value and the fundamental spirit of Chinese culture, State Councilor Liu Yandong told representatives of the 2008 Beijing Forum on Friday.     More than 300 scholars from more than 40 countries participated in the forum, with the theme "The Harmony of Civilization and Prosperity for All-The Universal Value and the Development Trend of Civilization."     Liu congratulated the forum, saying its theme was highly significant.     She said the concept of harmony had become a key criterion in many types of relations: among peoples, between individuals and society, among nationalities and states, among cultures and between humans and nature.     "It is especially important for academic and educational institutions to promote multinational cultural communication under globalization," said Liu.     Co-sponsored by Peking University, the Beijing Municipal Commission of Education and the Korea Foundation for Advanced Studies, the Beijing Forum 2008 -- the fifth such annual meeting -- convened on Nov. 7. He sought to reassure people that the economy would be able to regain steam.     "Try to develop new types of candles to cater to different cultures, which would capture big market share," Wen said during avisit to Qingdao Kingking Group, the world's second-largest candle maker.     During a visit to Haier, the country's largest appliance maker, the premier praised its sales promotion and services in rural areas as a factor stimulating rural consumption, which he said would help ease the impact of the global financial crisis. He reassured villagers that apart from the expanded subsidies, the government also encouraged enterprises to purchase old appliances and allow farmers to trade in older models for new ones as a move to sustain domestic demand.     The premier reiterated "confidence" wherever he went, saying a solid material foundation, stable financial system, abundant cash flow, large domestic markets, appropriate macroeconomic policies and others steps boosted confidence.     Wen said the State Council, or Cabinet, is drawing up two major plans.     One involves 10 programs to expand demand, further detailing and specifying the 10 stimulus measures kicked out last year.     The other includes the readjustment and improvement of 10 pillar industries. Plans for the development of steel industry and automobile industry have been rolled out and others are under way.
