At Allan Hancock College’s Fire Academy, Battalion 146 recently went through some intense rescue scenarios.“Help a brother out. Come on,” shouted an instructor.The person responsible for training the future firefighters is academy coordinator Andy Densmore, who has been in this industry for almost four decades and is retiring at the end of this year.“There’s nothing you can do about it,” he said. “We have to make the change.”Changes due to COVID-19.Since the pandemic hit, academy class sizes have been cut by a third, cadets are screened before they enter the facilities, they socially distance themselves once they’re in and wear masks when they’re not in face pieces.“The nice part is we asked these kids for their commitment the first day that we meet them and we said, ‘there’s only one variable in this entire program and it’s you,’” Densmore said.As Densmore’s career comes to a close during this crisis, Camila Schafer, class president of Battalion 146, is just starting hers.“Whether it’s a pandemic, it’s a fire, it’s a surf rescue, we’ll answer that call,” she said.Schafer says instructors can control all aspects of a cadet’s day while on campus but once they leave the academy, however, cadets are committed to an individual responsibility.“On weekends, we’re studying. we’re hitting the books,” she said. “We’re making sure that we’re not out there putting our battalion in jeopardy and possibly getting this virus.”Employment of firefighters is projected to grow faster than the average for all occupations across the country, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistcs.While this fire academy is training with new challenges, Densmore believes smaller class sizes could make cadets like Schafer better prepared than firefighters of the past.“We don’t graduate mediocre,” he said. “Our standards are really, really high. And we exceed what the state requires." 1888

BALTIMORE - A woman and man are dead and at least seven other people are seriously hurt after a gas explosion caused three homes to collapse Monday morning in Northwest Baltimore.As rescue crews and K-9's continued combing through the rubble overnight, a man's body was discovered just before 1 a.m. Tuesday. He is the second reported death related to the incident.A family member on Tuesday afternoon confirmed to WMAR-2 News, that the man found was 20-year-old Morgan State student Joseph Graham.Authorities haven't officially released the names of any of the victims.The explosion happened just before 10 a.m. near the Plaza in the area of Labyrinth and Reisterstown Roads, prompting a three-alarm response from 200 rescue crews from multiple cities and surrounding county agencies.About 200 people were impacted, including 30 who needed temporary housing.The American Red Cross is helping them with food, shelter, transportation, and medical services, while the city works to make sure the homes still standing are structurally sound.PHOTO GALLERY: DEADLY EXPLOSION TURNS NW BALTIMORE HOMES INTO RUBBLEBGE was able to turn gas off in the area by 9 p.m. Monday.Meanwhile, some electric lines were damaged causing power outages, but they've since been repaired with all power having been restored in the neighborhood.Investigators are looking into whether any customer-owned home utility appliances potentially contributed to the explosion.So far BGE says they've been unable to find any leaks or problems with gas mains and meters in the area.Prior to the explosion, BGE said they received no reports of gas odors or leaks at any of the homes in the last five years.The area’s gas infrastructure was installed in the early 1960s and was last inspected in July of 2019.Maryland's Vital Records building was forced to close for the rest of the day, following the explosion.WMAR-2 News spoke with two witnesses who explained what they heard and saw, and how they rushed to help. "I want to thank not only our Baltimore City first responders but also Baltimore County for their support during this tragedy. At Tuesday’s presidential debate, President Donald Trump complained that poll watchers in Philadelphia were denied access to early voting in the critical battleground state.“I’m urging my supporters to go into the polls and watch very carefully because that’s what has to happen,” Trump said. “I am urging them to do it. As you know, today there was a big problem. In Philadelphia, they went in to watch. They’re called poll watchers, a very safe, very nice thing. They were thrown out. They weren’t allowed to watch. You know why? Because bad things happen in Philadelphia. Bad things.”Poll watching is generally a commonly-accepted democratic practice employed throughout the US. But there are questions on what constitutes a polling site.In Pennsylvania, voting centers are not considered polling locations. Early voting centers are locations where voters can pick up a mail-in ballot and can complete and return the ballot on-site. Voters have the option of taking the ballot home and returning it before the election.“We don’t give someone a poll watcher certificate to … watch somebody fill out their ballot at their kitchen table,” Republican Philadelphia City Commissioner Al Schmidt told the Philadelphia Inquirer.While poll-watching laws vary by state, the practice is generally accepted, but it has limits. According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, poll watchers are to take a hands-off approach.For instance, poll watchers should not talk to voters, interfere with the voting process or campaign while on-site. Poll watchers, however, can watch for irregularities and report them to elections officials and political campaigns.There are generally limits on the number of poll watchers a campaign or party can designate. An accreditation process in 40 states means an ordinary citizen cannot walk into a polling site without some level of training, according to the Carter Center. "This process is led by local party chairs, candidates, or ballot issue groups and can require approval by election officials or the secretary of state’s office," the Carter Center said.Some interpreted Trump’s call for poll watchers as a voter intimidation tactic."Trump also told 'his supporters' to 'go into the polls and watch very carefully,'" said Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford on Twitter. "But he wasn't talking about poll watching. He was talking about voter intimidation. FYI, voter intimidation is illegal in Nevada. Believe me when I say it: You do it, and you will be prosecuted."A hands-off approach is what differentiates someone engaging in legal poll watching and illegal voter intimidation. Bad actors online are gearing up for the election.Experts with the cyber security company Check Point are warning that before, during and after Election Day, you could see clever campaigns to cast doubt on accuracy and results of the election.“You know, in contrast to previous elections, where it's been about very targeted looking to gain access to things, we really think from what we've seen from a research perspective is that it will be a larger attempt to create disruption versus anything else,” said Mark Ostrowski with Check Point.The software company is warning of a flood of memes on social media. They say the goal is to get so many going and people sharing them that algorithms and admins won’t be able to keep up with taking them down.The goal is to spread false information or create disruption.Check Point is sounding the alarm so people can educate themselves and not spread these.“We even have some of our researchers and instant response folks have even seen some evidence or some type of reliable information where regardless of who wins, there are certain mean themes that are going to be saying, hey, this, this is who the victor is regardless of what the actual results are to again to create this indecision To create this division,” said Ostrowski.Obviously, you can simply report an image on any social media site and only share credible sources on election information. 1405
