BEIJING, April 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao Wednesday called for greater efforts to fulfill the energy-saving and emission reduction goals set out in the nation's 11th Five Year Plan.According to the plan laid out in 2006, China will cut its per unit GDP energy consumption by 20 percent compared with 2005 levels by the end of 2010.Relevant departments must work harder to help enterprises close down old and polluting production facilities, he said at a State Council meeting.The departments must also suspend approval of new projects by enterprises failing to eliminate backward production capacity, he added.He also stressed efforts to curb the expansion of high energy-consuming industry, and emphasized strict control of exports of goods produced in an energy-inefficient way.Wen said energy-saving and emission reduction are priorities for the construction and transportation industries.Public institutions nationwide are expected to lower their energy consumption by 5 percent year on year in 2010, he added.More energy-conservation and emission-reduction publicity campaigns should be organized to promote the development of "green" consumption, he said.

XIANGNING, Shanxi, April 9 (Xinhua) -- The death toll in the flooded Wangjialing Coal Mine in north China's Shanxi Province rose to 25 Friday after two more bodies were found and rescuers continued the search for 13 miners still missing.About 260,000 cubic meters of water had been pumped out by Friday, two times more than expected, and rescuers were focusing on two sections where the 13 were believed trapped, Liu Dezheng, spokesman of the rescue operation, told a press conference.But the rescue was difficult as the water level had not dropped quickly enough and it was adjacent to a disused shaft full of water and toxic gas, he said.Rescuers believed the disused shaft had caused the initial flood when broken into by workers.A total of 261 miners were working below ground when the mine was flooded on March 28, and 108 miners escaped unharmed while 153 were trapped underground.On Monday, 115 miners were brought out of the mine alive after being trapped for more than a week. They are receiving medical care in five hospitals in Hejin and Taiyuan Cities, Liu said.All the 26 miners in Shanxi Aluminum Plant Hospital are allowed by doctors to be visited by their family members.A few workers told Xinhua that they are even gaining weight after more than a week of starvation."I feel better and better, more energetic today and I want to get off bed," said Liu Mingcai from Hunan, who lost ten kilograms when trapped underground.Another survivor Peng Guangzhong said "I feel much safer and is no longer afraid. ZHENGZHOU, May 29 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Indian President Pratibha Patil on Saturday visited an ancient Buddhist temple in central China that is believed to be the starting point for Buddhism's spread from India into China.Patil toured the White Horse Temple in Luoyang City, Henan Province, accompanied by the temple's abbot Shi Yinle, and inaugurated an Indian-style Buddhist hall as a gift to China.A Han Dynasty (206 BC-220 AD) emperor ordered the construction of the temple in honor of two Indian monks and horses that carried Buddhist scriptures and Buddha statues from India to the then capital Luoyang in 67 AD.During Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao's visit to India in 2005, the two countries agreed to build the Indian-style hall in the temple to commemorate the long history of bilateral ties.The 3,450-sq-m hall was funded by the Indian government and constructed by the Chinese side, the first of its kind outside of India.Wang Zhizhen, vice chairwoman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), the country's top political advisory body, also attended the inauguration ceremony.Following the visit, Patil left Henan for the ongoing World Expo in Shanghai, the last leg of her week-long state visit to China.During her visit, the two sides agreed to boost cultural exchange and people-to-people contact.
