SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego is getting its first round of Pfizer vaccines to fight the coronavirus next week, but the vaccine is recommended for those 16 years and older. Many parents are concerned about what that means for their children and going back to school."Essentially the Pfizer vaccine wasn't studied in kids under 12 but we are going to see more study in them," Dr. Abi Olulade, with Sharp Family Medicine said. While Pfizer is working on a child-safe vaccine, their competitor Moderna started testing their vaccine on 12-17-year-olds Thursday.Dr. Olulade sees the newly approved Pfizer vaccine as a lifeline, "we have a weapon now in the war against this virus and we're all breathing a huge sigh of relief."The vaccine a relief for our healthcare system swamped with coronavirus patients. When a shot is approved and safe for kids, Dr. Olulade said it's important parents have their kids vaccinated."Vaccines have a very long and proven safety record in kids," Dr. Olulade said. When asked what is the risk of waiting to get your child vaccinated, she replied, "death and long term effects of COVID, overwhelming our healthcare system and preventing us from providing care for other conditions that don't just stop because of COVID and so I think everyone should really really think about making sure that they get vaccinated to protect all of us."She said it's important also to get children vaccinated because they are proven super-spreaders of the virus and susceptible to harm from it."We just saw in Los Angeles the first child that died from Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome which is a really scary thing that is new with this virus," Dr. Olulade said.Dr. Olulade said we will have to wait and see if schools require the vaccine moving forward. If your child has allergies, she said make sure you talk with your doctor before vaccinating your child."To say that this is a breakthrough and a victory for science is probably an understatement," Dr. Olulade said about the vaccine.A weapon, she said, is only helpful if we all use it, "when you get vaccinated, you're not just protecting yourself, you're protecting other people and children who may be going through really terrible things like cancer, so it's our responsibility that we all have to protect those who are more vulnerable." 2311

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Sailors from the USS Abraham Lincoln Strike Group are returning home after 294 days.Sailors left from their home port in Virginia in April and saw their deployment extended twice before coming to their new home port of Coronado.P02 John Aportela is one of the the 6,000 sailors that made up the strike group. Like many parents, he met his 6-month-old daughter for the first time.“I’m blessed to be back and I thank God for bringing us back safe." Aportela said.RELATED: Thousands of sailors leave for 7-month deployment on USS RooseveltGrowing tensions in the Middle East kept the strike group at the ready in the area. Sailors and Marines were involved with maritime security and combat missions while working with allies, including France, Bahrain, Malaysia, Singapore, Saudi Arabia and Oman. Those missions took the crew across the globe to places like Singapore, Saipan, Philippines, Japan, Israel, Thailand, Australia, Maldives, Hong Kong, and other locations. The strike group's Helicopter Marine Strike Squadron 79, or "The Griffins," returned to NAS Coronado Sunday ahead of the carrier's arrival. That team was supposed to return before Halloween, but had their employment extended. The group's 10-month deployment was the longest carrier deployment since the Cold War. During its deployment, the group has assisted operations in the U.S. 5th, 6th, and 7th Fleet areas of operation spanning the globe.Sailors are expected to pull into San Diego at about 10 a.m.The USS Abraham Lincoln coalition works to provide deterrence, promote peace and security, preserve freedom of the sea, and offer humanitarian and disaster response. 1661

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego business leaders reacted with alarm to President Trump's plan to slap tariffs on goods imported from Mexico. On June 10, the President plans to place a 5% tariff on items like avocados, tomatoes, cars and medical devices that come from south of the border. They would increase until reaching 25% on Oct 1. Trump says the tariffs would continue until Mexico addresses the issue of migrants at the border. The San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce has come out strong against the tariffs. The Chamber says Mexico is San Diego's biggest trade partner, with a .5 billion manufacturing supply chain that's now at risk. Jerry Sanders, the chamber's CEO, says every manufacturing job in Tijuana leads to half a new job in San Diego. "If consumers cut back because of the price of goods, that means there will be fewer jobs and there will be less production on both sides of the border," he said. Some consumers already appear wary. Mancher Nasar, who lives in Rancho Bernardo, said he expects his grocery bill to rise as the tariffs kick in. "I'm concerned about middle class families," he said. "You're putting a 25% tariff but you're not getting 25% more in your paycheck."University of San Diego economist Alan Gin said tariffs are normally used for economic purposes, not political ones. "This is as far out as we've ever seen in the use of tariffs," Gin said. Gin said San Diegans will feel them, but that states like Texas and New Mexico will fare worse. Gin said that's because a lot of the manufacturing belt in Mexico is in the central part of the country. 1598
