(KGTV) -- Escondido Police are investigating after a man was stabbed to death Tuesday evening.Police say there were called to the 500 bloc of West 7th Avenue just before 8 p.m. Tuesday afte receiving several reports of a man in an alley who was unresponsive.After officers arrived, they found the man with multiple stab wounds to his upper torso. The man died at the scene, police say.A search warrant was executed at a nearby home believed to be linked to the homicide, but police are still seeking information on the incident and suspects.The events leading up to the stabbing are also unclear at this time.Anyone with information about the homicide is asked to call the Escondido Police Department. 727

ESCONDIDO (CNS) - A Pauma Valley man accused of ambushing three San Diego County sheriff's deputies at his home in a rural area near Casino Pauma, sparking a nearly six-hour standoff in which he suffered a gunshot wound, was charged today with three counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm on a peace officer.Arraignment for 28-year-old Jose Nieto at Palomar Medical Center was postponed until Jan. 11 because he was deemed medically unfit for the proceeding while being treated for the gunshot wound he sustained during last Thursday's standoff.The complaint against Nieto includes allegations of personal use and discharge of a firearm. He faces 33 years and eight months in prison if convicted, said Deputy District Attorney Michael Runyon.The standoff began around 4:15 p.m. on Dec. 20, when deputies Cory Crawford, Jared Muli, and John Avedesian went to a home in the 156-00 block of Adams Drive in response to a a 911 call from a man who said "he needed help and didn't feel safe in his home."As the three deputies approached the front door of the home, they were met with gunfire, said sheriff's Lt. Rich Williams.The deputies returned fire, established a perimeter around the home and called for backup, including a SWAT team. Nearby residents were evacuated from their homes and surrounding streets were shut down. The deputies were not injured.Authorities spend hours trying to establish communication with the gunman, but when that was unsuccessful, the SWAT team entered the home about 10 p.m. and found Nieto inside with a gunshot wound to his lower body, Williams said. 1598

(KGTV) -- Encinitas lifeguards are investigating after a Panga Boat washed ashore Friday afternoon.According to lifeguards, the 20-foot boat washed ashore around 4 p.m. on the 300 block of El Portal Street and about 11 people ran from the vessel.Lifeguards say they don’t believe anyone was injured or needed medical attention.Border Patrol, Homeland Security, and the Sheriff’s Department were all notified about the incident. (KGTV) -- As San Diego County inches closer to finally being removed from the state’s watch list, it remains unknown what exactly that will mean for businesses that have been waiting to reopen indoor operations.“We have asked the state for guidance for what they think the policy will be, the process will be, for potentially reopening some of the entities that faced additional closures,” said County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher.In the meantime, some cities across the county have been working with businesses to ensure they can still operate outside during the challenging time. Some of those businesses appear to be thriving.“More people are coming out to eat, and as you can see, we’re already almost full here,” said Mia Davis, the owner of Mikko Sushi in downtown Escondido.Davis and her sister-in-law, Minky Jeon, opened Mikko Sushi in February, but just one month later they were forced to shut down indoor dining due to the rising COVID-19 cases across the county.They moved to take out orders only, a struggle for the new business owners.“We were devastated actually because we were just finally starting to build our clientele,” said Davis.Then the City of Escondido stepped in to help businesses move outdoors quickly and easily, making all the difference for business owners like Davis.“The City of Escondido went out of their way to help us,” she said. “They really helped expedite the permit process, and I didn’t have to pay any fees.”Davis told ABC 10News, she was not only able to keep her original staff employed, but Mikko Sushi became so busy with outdoor dining, that she had to hire more employees.“Every Friday night we have a big waiting list,” she said. “I’m thankful that local customers really been supporting us, and I can’t complain.”A walk down Grand Avenue in Escondido reveals how locals have embraced the opportunity to dine outside. The sight is something that brings Amber Tarrac, the Deputy Director of Economic Development for the City of Escondido, much joy.“We’re really happy and proud to be able to support our businesses in that way,” said Tarrac. “The city really took strong, swift action and worked with very closely with our Chamber of Commerce and Downtown Business Association to allow for and facilitate the permit process to allow for our businesses to operate outside. "Can't stop thinking about him and about that day," said Marc Engelhardt.Engelhardt calls the last week all-consuming and painful, since the moment he doubled back during a six-hour bike ride to see what was keeping his friends - only to discover the horrific aftermath. His friend Kevin Lentz, 36, a husband and new father, was struck and killed on an Escondido street, hit head-on by a dark sedan which promptly took off."Disbelief, surreal," said Engelhardt.RELATED: Friends mourn bicyclist killed in hit-and-run crashPolice say they discovered the heavily damaged car about a half mile away.
