The 26th annual "Shop with a Cop" event brought 300 kids out to go on a shopping spree with local officers, from San Diego Police to California Highway Patrol to San Diego County Sheriff's deputies.The shopping spree was just the tip of the iceberg for kids Saturday morning. Their day started at SeaWorld San Diego, where they had breakfast with officers and enjoyed a Christmas-themed dolphin show. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Keeping kids active, while also letting them follow their passion, is a top priority for a lot of parents.But often it comes at a cost. A new study from CompareCards.com shows that 46% of parents spend more than ,000 a year on activities for their kids, and 27% spend more than ,000. "As much as we love our kids as parents, and as much as we want them to pursue their dreams, life is expensive in 2019," says Matt Schulz, an Industry Analyst with CompareCards.com. "Parents are spending an awful lot of money to keep their kids in these activities."According to the study, 62% of parents admit they go into debt to pay for it all. 64% of parents say the costs cause them added stress.RELATED: Making It In San Diego: Community colleges offer free tuition to San Diego students"It's important to support your kids and teach them to follow their dreams," says Schulz. "But you also have to be able to do so without ruining your own dreams."One San Diego parent thinks she has a way to help. "Every few months you have to purchase new cleats, a new bat to grow with them."Mendez has four boys that have been involved in all kinds of sports. As they've grown, old equipment has piled up in her garage. But it's worth it."I want them to be well rounded and exposed to many opportunities," she says, adding that the activities keep her kids away from doing anything that may get them into trouble.The study also found that nearly 80% of parents believe their child's activities could one day lead to income, whether in the form of a scholarship, job or side-hustle.Schulz says it's also essential to involve your children in discussions about how their activities factor into the budget."It makes sense to be open and honest with your kids about the cost of these things," he says. 3411

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It has been over six months since a water main break spilled thousands of gallons of water into North Park streets, but some homeowners are still dealing with the aftermath.Jonathan Head has owned a triplex on Idaho street for almost twenty years."There's two buildings," Head said. "It was built in [the] 1940s."Back in October, a water main broke near his property. His tenants started to text him early that morning on October 4th. "It made my heart drop... it was like a river," Head said. While the water did not enter the living space, Head said it went into the vents flooding the crawl space beneath. "The wiring, the plumbing [was] completely saturated," Head said. He said city workers tried to fix the problem, but it was too late."By the time they got the equipment in, most of the water had penetrated the soil," Head said. He believes that made it difficult to dry out the property, which is why they are seeing problems with the foundation. Head said cracks below and inside the home developed. He filed a claim with the City of San Diego, but said he got no response."The city still has not compensated the clients entirely for the full scope of the damage," said Head's attorney, Evan Walker. There is now a lawsuit claiming roughly 5,000 worth of damage. "I think the city has known for some time about the precarious condition of its pipes and that it has done nothing," Walker added.
