James Nestor is the author of the book "Breath: the New Science of a Lost Art." He's written for many publications including The New York Times, National Public Radio, and Scientific American. For the past decade, he’s been traveling the world talking with top breathing experts to gather research for his latest book.“The book "Breath" is looking at how humans have lost the ability to breathe correctly and why we’re suffering from so many chronic problems because of it," Nestor said. "And it’s really based on finding ways to acknowledge these problems and how to fix them.”Chronic problems like asthma, snoring, sleep apnea and COPD.“Breathing can often be exacerbating these problems, or in some cases causing these problems," Nestor said. He says a lack of oxygen causes stress on the heart, but the most noticeable impact of poor breathing is anxiety.“People don’t always pay attention to how important breathing is, and how when you’re not breathing properly, how stressful it is,” McQueen said.Considering we’re in the final weeks of the election and in the middle of a pandemic, it’s likely a lot of us are feeling more stressed out. However, practicing deep and controlled breathing is scientifically proven to help us feel better.“One thing that you can do, is breathe through your nose," Nestor said. "Breathe through your nose all the time.”In addition to breathing through your nose, James suggests breathing slowly, deeply and more lightly. He says that breathing allows us to hack into our nervous system and it relaxes us. McQueen says he tells his patients to focus on ‘square breathing’.“I kind of try to teach them to think of a square breath," McQueen said. "So they take a breath in, they hold it for a moment, and then they relax and let it go. And by doing that, you can’t breathe really fast.”McQueen says fast breathing in our chest can lead to more anxiety and an eventual panic attack with hyperventilation. If you ever find yourself getting to that point, Nestor says you can start counting while you breathe.“If ever you feel yourself becoming anxious or stressed out, or your thoughts are scattered, take in a breath to about four, exhale to about six to calm yourself,” Nestor said.Nestor says the impact of breathing goes beyond anxiety and his research suggests we should be breathing deeply all the time. He says being aware of our breathing is the first step we can take to a healthier lifestyle.“You can exercise all you want, you can eat the best possible foods," Nestor said. KIRKWOOD, Calif. -- A 7-year-old boy and his mother were killed when a massive block of snow fell from a roof several feet from the front door of the condo they were staying in Monday. The Alpine County Sheriff’s Department said 50-year-old Olga Perkovic and her son, Aaron Goodstein were returning to the condo after skiing when a trailer-sized block of snow collapsed onto them.Rescuers held an hours-long search at the nearby Kirkwood Ski Resort because the two had boarded a lift in the afternoon.    RELATED: San Diego native who survived NorCal avalanche thanks rescuers?The mother and son were found beneath three feet of snow after a neighbor saw ski gloves nearby. KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The man whose wife was found dismembered in two ice coolers has been charged in connection with dismembering and abandoning her body. Justin Rey is accused of abandonment of a corpse and endangering the welfare of a child.  Lenexa police officers went to U-Haul on October 24 to check on Rey and his two children, who were reportedly sleeping in a storage unit. During the investigation, a woman’s remains were found in the unit. Court documents officially identified the remains as Rey’s wife. The documents said Rey’s wife, who family identified as Jessica Monteiro Rey, was found dismembered in coolers. According to court records, Rey was dragging several containers at the U-Haul facility when police spoke to him. Rey told officers his wife died after childbirth several days earlier, and her body was in the two containers. Court documents said Rey told police he spent two days with his wife’s body before dismembering her. Rey told detectives his two children were in the hotel room as he dismembered and disposed of his wife’s body. Prosecutors requested a bond of 0,000 cash. Rey is in custody in Johnson County. The Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office said the case remains under investigation.  1281

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Authorities in East Tennessee have asked the public to be on the lookout after a tiger was spotted near an industrial park.The Knox County Sheriff’s Office said a deputy spotted the tiger Wednesday night in the Forks of the River Industrial Park.The sheriff’s office says several agencies are looking for the tiger, including the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, Knoxville police’s Animal Control Unit and representatives with Tiger Haven, which is located in Kingsport.Investigators say there have been no other sightings.
