SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Back to school looked different for everyone according to Misty Jones, who helped run Career Online High School, a free program put on by the San Diego Public Library."It's geared towards people who have disengaged from the educational system for some type of reason and did not graduate."The program allowed them to finish where they left off through online courses."They get their high school diploma and career certificate by the end of it," Jones described.The program was around for 5 years and had gained popularity in the Spring."People are at home and they have more time. It's difficult to go to school and try to work at the same time," Jones said.They typically saw 50 students a year but since March the number doubled."I know a lot of people are out of of jobs and they're thinking of their future, 'what can I do to ensure success moving forward'."Genevieve Redondo is a mother of two and dropped out of high school her senior year. "I have ADHD and dyslexia. Being in school was difficult because of the attention, I couldn't focus all that well," Redondo described.She received her diploma through COHS then went on to nursing school and eventually got her master's degree."The opportunity they gave me to graduate, ever since then everything has change, my entire life has changed and it's been incredible."Jones said the average age was 28 to 35, but that was just the average."We have people in their 60's that are going back and getting their high school diploma and that shows its never too late to get your education."They even held graduation ceremonies like any other high school did."I cry at every graduation," said Jones. "It's really fulfilling to help people be their best self and help them achieve goals they never thought they'd achieve." 1798

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Creating a future has its hurdles, and can be especially tricky for people facing poverty or with criminal backgrounds. A San Diego organization is making sure the future is within reach. “I was on probation… I had to go to sober living to get my life right,” said Anthony Johnson. Johnson is a recent graduate of Second Chance, an organization in Encanto that helps kids and adults who have criminal backgrounds or are facing poverty get back on the right track through their programs and job training. “They changed my life," said Johnson. Covering the walls of the classrooms at Second Chance are notes illustrate the hope and want students have for a better future. “Our mission statement starts with the word disrupt. If we can break the past now, then the future has a chance to come into that person’s life,” said Robert Coleman.Coleman is the President and CEO of Second Chance and has been helping people create a future where they can provide for themselves and their families. “Isn’t it better to have people in our community who have hope and have a sense of direction and career and housing and not a journey of crime? We give them a future, and we are actually making our community a safer place,” said Coleman.Coleman’s dedication to the people in Encanto and Southeast San Diego, along with the gratitude expressed by his students and colleagues, is why we have selected Robert Coleman as our 10News Leadership Award recipient. “Everyone has hope. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - County health officials are encouraging local women to get vaccinated for "whooping cough" amid a possible epidemic.The county says pertussis, commonly known as "whooping cough," could turn into a possible local epidemic based on historical patterns."It’s critical for pregnant women and people who come into close contact with young infants to get vaccinated," Wilma Wooten, County public health officer, said. "Newborns are very susceptible to whooping cough because they are too young to be fully vaccinated. It is vital for pregnant women to be vaccinated in the third trimester to give protection to their unborn infants."So far in 2018, there have been 56 confirmed cases of pertussis.RELATED: This app says it can help you stay flu-freeLast year, San Diego County recorded at least 1,154 cases, the highest of any county in California. Wooten said the high numbers were partially attributed to reporting methods."Pertussis activity in our region appears to higher than the rest of the state, but much of this is due to the excellent detection and reporting of this potentially deadly disease by San Diego pediatricians and family physicians," Wooten said.Pertussis is a cyclical disease that peaks every three to five years, according to health officials. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — California has rejected San Diego County's request for a tier adjustment after the region was moved into the state's purple reopening tier.The county said that "San Diego’s increased cases are not due to the sectors impacted by moving into a more restrictive tier. County has interviewed cases to identify potential exposure settings and tracked community outbreaks."County health officials say businesses that will be impacted by purple tier restrictions saw the following breakdown of COVID-19 cases in October:Restaurant/bars: 7.4% of COVID-19 cases (715 of 9,646)Retail: 6.6% of COVID-19 cases (636 of 9,646)Places of worship: 1.9% of COVID-19 cases (184 of 9,646)K-12 schools: 1.7% of COVID-19 cases (165 of 9,646)Gyms: 0.4% of COVID-19 cases (39 of 9,646)In reference to October's data, the county said that, "outbreak data also show these sectors make up a small percentage of the cases overall ... SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Court documents are giving a glimpse into the past of the 26-year-old accused of killing his parents and sister in a Logan Heights house fire.Wilber Romero is accused of starting the fire at the home on the 3100 block of Clay Street around 4:30 a.m. October 13. 44-year-old Jose Romero died at the scene while his wife and daughter, 46-year-old Nicolasa Maya-Romero and 21-year-old Iris Romero died at the hospital in the days following the blaze.The family’s 23-year-old daughter and 16-year-old son were also hospitalized. Wilber is facing several charges in the fire, including first-degree murder, arson and attempted first-degree murder. Court documents show it wasn’t the first time he allegedly targeted his family. He reportedly attacked his father with a brick and rocks and damaged his car in September of 2018. The incident prompted a police standoff that ended when police shot bean bags at Wilber and released a police dog, documents show. The documents go on to state Wilber was in a car accident when he was 6-years-old and that he has suffered from a learning disability since the crash. According to the documents, Wilber also struggled with drug addiction. 1203
