The family of an Iowa teen killed in a fiery bus crash in western Iowa has filed a lawsuit against the Riverside Community School District.Court documents show the family of 16-year-old Megan Klindt allege the district knew there was a problem with the bus driver but did not adequately address it.The documents claim Klindt had complained to her school principal that she felt unsafe with Donald Hendricks, 74, driving the bus.Klindt and the 74-year-old driver both died when the bus caught fire in Oakland, Iowa, in December. 545

The family of a Pennsylvania woman who died in jail in 2015 from heroin withdrawal symptoms was awarded .75 million in a wrongful death suit settlement this week, CBS News reported. Victoria "Tori" Herr, then 18, died on April 5, 2015, nine days after being arrested after police found drugs in the woman's apartment. Herr told police that she had consumed 10 bags of heroin a day. During her first four days in custody, Herr reportedly suffered from bouts of vomiting and diarrhea. She was treated with water and Ensure, but was unable to keep her fluids down. The result of those symptoms led her to cardiac arrest and to lose consciousness, CBS News reported. Herr's lawyers claimed that the Lebanon County Correctional Facility did not meet her basic medical needs, and then lied. "Anyone who looked at her would have known that she was very sick and that she needed attention," Herr's family lawyer Jonathan Feinberg told CBS. The coronavirus pandemic and the renewed focus on systemic economic inequality in our country are bringing new attention and support to community-based nonprofit lenders.Community development financial institutions, or CDFIs, focus on rural, low-income and minority communities.Around 300 CDFIs made more than billion in Paycheck Protection Program loans to help small businesses, many of which had been left out previously.By comparison, JPMorgan Chase, which is nine times the size of the entire CDFI industry, made only four times the amount of PPP loans.“Many CDFIs we are in many ways like small businesses, we didn't come into this situation strong in terms of our capital,” said Luz Urrutia, CEO of Opportunity Fund. “Now more than ever, during the rebuilding, we've got to have the balance sheet strength because we are supporting these low-income communities, small businesses and communities of color.”Opportunity Fund is one of those CDFIs. It's been raising millions of dollars since March, specifically to help minority, immigrant and women-owned businesses.Serena Williams and MacKenzie Scott have both donated recently. But there are questions about how long all the support these nonprofit lenders have been getting will last.“What I would say for the minority-owned businesses right now, timing is perfect and when timing is perfect, you need to strike while the iron is hot,” said Maurice Brewster, CEO of Mosaic Global Transportation. “And right now, there's a lot of support, a lot of ground swelling with dealing with small and minority-owned businesses.”Maurice Brewster’s business received loan payment deferral from Opportunity Fund during the pandemic.
