BEIJING, June 26 (Xinhua) -- China's police chief has urged the country's rehabilitation professionals and staff to provide excellent medical care for drug users and develop effective and humane methods to help free them from the use of drugs.Minister of Public Security Meng Jianzhu made the remarks Friday during his visit to the city of Ningbo in eastern Zhejiang Province to inspect local drug rehabilitation work."To successfully transform a drug user is to save a family and contribute to social harmony. We should explore effective and humane methods to help them stop using drugs and return to society for a better life," Meng said while visiting a district drug rehab center.Meng expressed his gratitude to all community workers and volunteers for their contribution to the country's anti-drug fight and told them to provide excellent medical care for drug users, including specialized treatments."Drug rehab is a very long, arduous and complicated process. You must overcome all difficulties with confidence and firm belief in order to give up drugs and be happy and healthy...," Meng told patients at the drug rehabilitation center.Meng expressed the hope that these patients would teach more people to cherish life and stay away from drugs after they returned to society.On Saturday, a local court in southeast China's Fujian Province announced the executions of two drug dealers who were convicted of selling and trafficking 12,242 grams of heroin.In addition, the ministry announced Saturday in a statement that police across the country seized 38,000 suspects in drug-related crimes from January to May during a national campaign.A total of 2.3 tons of heroine, 2.4 tons of crystal methamphetamine and 2.1 tons of ketamine were confiscated, along with 243 tons of chemicals for drug making.According to the statement, the crackdown, starting in early this year, has been focusing on drug making and trafficking, especially chains involving foreign sources.Saturday is the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

BEIJING, July 10 (Xinhua) -- More than 50 people have been killed and 15 are missing following floods, landslides and mud flows that hit parts of central and southern China following days of torrential rains, the Ministry of Civil Affairs said Saturday.Nearly 17.2 million residents in nine provinces were affected by flood-related disasters and 597,000 people were relocated from July 1 to 12 a.m. of July 10, the ministry said in its latest disaster relief update.About 946,500 hectares of farmland were damaged, including 133,900 hectares that were completely destroyed. Further, more than 42,000 houses collapsed and another 121,000 were damaged, the ministry said, estimating that direct economic losses could reach 8.9 billion yuan (1.3 billion U.S. dollars).The ministry sent 6,000 tents to the hardest-hit Hubei Province in central China and Chongqing Municipality in southwest China on Saturday.In June, torrential rains had resulted in 260 deaths and left 211 missing in 11 southern provinces.The latest round of storms began to pound large swaths of central and southern China on July 8.In Hubei, the local weather forecast bureau said storms or thunder storms could hit the province again from July 11 to 13. It warned that rainfall would exceed 300 millimeters in some worst-hit areas, which was likely to trigger another round of heavy floods.The Three Gorges Dam, sitting in the middle reach of the Yangtze River in Hubei, on Saturday released water for the first time this year.Engineers opened three sluice gates to discharge some 32,000 cubic meters of water per second and another sluice gate to release floating objects.The flood from the upper stream reaching the dam was measured at 36,000 cubic meters of water per second and could increase to 39,000 cubic meters per second by Sunday, dam officials said.Authorities said water levels in many branches of the 6,397-meter-long Yangtze River that runs from west to east, had gone above the warning lines. At Wulong monitoring station in Chongqing the water level was three meters above the warning line.In southwest China's Guizhou Province, several counties and villages were submerged in more than one meter deep water. About 7,500 residents were evacuated from the flooded zones.Also, four miners were killed in a gas explosion after heavy rain cut off electricity and stopped ventilation equipment at a coal mine in Xishui County of Guizhou's Zunyi City early Saturday morning. Seven of the 25 miners who were working underground managed to escape when the explosion occurred. Rescuers later saved 14 other miners.

  

XINING, July 21 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese official has called for more social and economic development in the nation's Tibetan-inhabited regions to improve people's livelihoods.Zhou Yongkang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remarks during his visit to northwest China's Qinghai Province on Monday and Tuesday.Zhou visited workers fighting floods on the Golmud River and he urged local governments to work hard to ensure the safety of the Qinghai-Tibet railway.While visiting quake-devastated Yushu County, Zhou urged the local government to speed up the rebuilding of quake survivors' homes.Zhou encouraged the local Tibetan people to be optimistic about the future and to put the disaster behind them.Zhou also visited a PetroChina refinery in the province and called on the company's staff to overcome the difficulties of life on the plateau and to make greater contributions to the nation's energy industry.While visiting local communities in Golmud City, Zhou asked the local police to better serve residents and called on local Muslims to maintain national unity and social stability.

  

GUANLING, Guizhou, June 29 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu Tuesday urged local government to use all resources to rescue victims of a landslide in southwest China's Guizhou Province.Rescuers should save the lives of the victims and treat the wounded using all possible means, said Hui during an inspection tour of the disaster-hit area from late Monday to Tuesday.He also called for the utmost efforts to properly resettle people affected by the landslide and sounded caution regarding additional landslides.He said all areas prone to landslides should be examined closely and nearby residents must be evacuated immediately upon any sign of an impending landslide.Further, information about the disaster relief efforts should be made public in a timely, objective, open and transparent manner, said Hui.The landslide occurred at 2:30 p.m. on Monday in Dazhai Village, Gangwu Township of Guanling County, burying 107 people from 38 families. Rescuers said their chances of survival were slim.
